The social media platform X has revealed that it conducted an investigation into "suspected Chinese inauthentic accounts" allegedly engaged in influence operations. This probe led to the discovery of a significant bot farm consisting of approximately 200,000 accounts. Among these, 200 accounts were identified as actively participating in activities that could potentially skew public discussions surrounding U.S. artificial intelligence and energy policy.
According to a statement from the X Safety team shared on the platform's Global Government Affairs account, "We identified a bot farm of around 200,000 accounts… 200 of which were posting content that could distort authentic debates concerning AI and energy policies in America."
The posts highlighted by X included assertions that AI data centers are contributing to rising electricity bills and overtaxing the energy grid. Additionally, some posts featured AI-generated cartoons portraying data-center operators as profiting at the expense of the public.
Simultaneously, New York has recently taken a bold step by becoming the first state to impose a freeze on new AI data centers, a decision that critics argue may harm job growth in the area.
X affirmed its dedication to preserving a genuine and open forum for public discourse, taking any actions that might compromise the integrity of the platform seriously. They stated, "We suspend accounts that breach our Authenticity policy," emphasizing their commitment to prevent disinformation.
The post included various screenshots exemplifying the suspect content, with one notable piece depicting a comic strip that criticized data centers for receiving subsidies while burdening taxpayers with costs.
The debate surrounding data centers has intensified in the U.S. as concerns grow over their environmental impact and rising energy expenses in localities. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently articulated that the wariness from diverse political factions about large-scale data centers stems from distrust towards major tech companies and their expanding influence over citizens, suggesting the issues extend beyond simply resource consumption.
On a different front, some figures, including former President Donald Trump, have expressed the need to ensure that China does not surpass the U.S. in AI advancements. In a post on Truth Social last month, Trump stated, "The Radical Left Dumocrats must not be allowed to cause us to lose Data Centers, AI, and all of this incredible new Technology, to China, and other countries!"
