In New Jersey, the first cohort of startups has embarked on the inaugural AI Accelerator program facilitated by the New Jersey Artificial Intelligence Hub. This hub represents a partnership among Princeton University, the State of New Jersey, Microsoft, and CoreWeave, with a mission to drive advancements in artificial intelligence and enhance the state's standing as a global AI leader.

The AI Accelerator program is tailored to streamline the sales cycles for participating startups while fostering connections between their founders and potential customers. A year after the New Jersey Artificial Intelligence Hub’s launch, the first cohort of startups has begun its AI Accelerator program. The AI Hub is a collaborative initiative between Princeton University, the State of New Jersey, Microsoft, and CoreWeave, aimed to “accelerate innovation in artificial intelligence and position New Jersey as a global leader in the field.”

The AI Accelerator program is designed to shorten the sales cycles for each member of the cohort and connect their founders to new customers, according to New Jersey director of Plug and Play Tyler Lange. The cohort of startups receives support from Plug and Play, a venture capital firm that aims to connect large companies with startups, including weekly workshops, corporate introductions, and direct product feedback.

Justin Murray, who leads much of Plug and Play’s U.S. venture work, told The Daily Princetonian that the AI Hub team evaluates what companies to back using what he calls the three Ts: “technology, traction, and team.” Hundreds of candidates were considered by Plug and Play to be part of the program, and 20 finalists pitched their startups in March at the AI Hub. Fourteen were chosen to be in the inaugural cohort.

Founders and leaders of these startups shared that simply being selected for the AI Accelerator program changed how customers and partners viewed them.

Mohnish Mohanty, CEO of healthcare finance startup Intelizen, said the accelerator gave his company legitimacy in a crowded and skeptical market.

“There’s a positive association with [Plug and Play] and [the AI Hub],” he said. Mohanty added that credibility is especially important in healthcare, where hospitals and providers are inundated with vendors. “It takes a village to build a great company,” he said. “And I think having these events and having these people that are kind of vetted and being part of the ecosystem now — that matters a lot.”

For Chorah Labs, a platform which uses AI to design workflows that help companies satisfy federal regulations in the pharmaceutical sector, the New Jersey connection was equally important. Co-founder Sepehr Rahimi said applying “was a no-brainer,” explaining, “Not only are we an AI company, we are an AI company for the pharma industry, which is kind of one of the most dear industries in New Jersey.”

The program, according to Rahimi, helped Chorah Labs “build that authority as we are building … and bootstrapping our platform.”

Chorah Labs’ other co-founder Jason Chou added that the state’s biotech momentum made the AI Hub a natural fit. “We’ve really seen a surge in biotech activity in New Jersey,” he said. “Graduates shouldn’t have to go to Boston or the West Coast to build biotech companies.”

Founders also described Plug and Play’s programming as useful to understanding what platforms companies may be interested in.

Rahimi said the program “refined us and helped us rethink about what we are doing.” Chorah Labs made several pivots based on traction and distribution insights from Plug and Play, Chou and Rahimi explained.

Hydronos Labs founder Colby Fisher GS ’18 said the workshops offered the opportunity to showcase his work to a group of people before actually pitching it out.

“When I was a grad student, this is exactly the kind of program I would have wanted,” he said. “Plug and Play’s ecosystem lets you show your work to hundreds of people. It’s a vetting process that’s incredibly useful.”

Nodes Inc. founder Saad Bin Shafiq said the corporate-first structure was what convinced him to apply to the cohort. “This is one of the first times I saw someone like, ‘Okay, why don’t we first introduce you to customers?’” he said. “‘Then if you think we bring you enough value, then you let us invest with you.’”

Shafiq said the reverse pitches, where companies present what they need, and corporate sessions led directly to new business. “I made some really great connections afterward to some biopharma company,” he said.

Alex Ge, co-founder of Rena Labs, echoed that the introductions were the most valuable part. “Plug and Play and the AI Hub introduced us to corporations we never knew before,” he said.

Throughout the program, Plug and Play offers introductions to Microsoft, NVIDIA, and other hyperscalers as well as access to its own 3,000-person Silicon Valley Summit.

Lange said the AI Hub’s location is central to the accelerator’s strategy. The program is “stage‑agnostic,” he said, meaning it accepts companies at any stage but does not rely solely on local clientele. He added that New Jersey’s density of talent and corporate customers makes it unusually fertile ground for the program. Founders similarly pointed to the state’s industrial landscape as a reason to stay.

Mohanty pointed to the state’s dense healthcare infrastructure as a natural fit for his company. Ge added that many of the state’s traditional industries are now seeking modernization, creating strong demand for privacy-preserving data tools.

Though the AI Accelerator lasts 12 weeks, Plug and Play maintains ongoing relationships through its internal “Playbook” platform, which tracks startup progress and connects alumni to new corporate requests.

“It’s not a relationship that’s severed after the three months,” Lange said. “It’s really just the beginning.”

Several founders said they plan to continue working with Princeton researchers and New Jersey institutions as they grow.

Rahimi said Chorah Labs hopes to deepen its ties with Princeton researchers. “We would love to kind of start those relationships and kind of cultivate that,” he said. “Princeton University being one of the leading research institutes in the nation, there will be some PIs and some research groups that are working on pharmaceutical drugs or therapies that would find our systems interesting or to the least of it enabling for the earlier stages… so yeah, we would love to actually increase that.”

Fisher said Hydronos Labs is open to future collaboration with Princeton researchers. “I go to all the Princeton events and talk to people,” he said. If there’s a “logical connection, we’re more than happy to pursue it.” Mohanty said Intelizen is “definitely early in that game” but eager to build research and talent connections.

While the accelerator does not guarantee pilots or funding, it offers access to opportunities that many early-stage founders struggle to reach. “Nothing’s a guarantee in the startup world,” Lange said. “We’re trying to push as many of these opportunities to the forefront as possible.”

Lange said the AI Hub’s long-term goal is to help build the next generation of New Jersey-born AI companies.

“This foundation we’re laying in [New Jersey],” said Lange, “is hopefully a very good means to help startups onboard to all the state has to offer.”

NJ AI Hub marks first anniversary with inaugural startup cohort

At Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, a location historically noted for grazing, a major investment firm is gearing up to establish a data center. This site, situated approximately an hour from the nearest town, is part of a military facility where the U.S. conducts key chemical and biological weapons testing. The area comprises three parcels that collectively span about 3,466 acres, with one of them—approximately 1,201 acres—already allocated for development.

This project is among at least a dozen military sites the Army and the Department of the Air Force have made available to commercial data center developers over the last 18 months. While two deals are confirmed, the others remain proposals.

In March, the Army initiated exclusive negotiations with two firms to set up and manage large-scale data centers on military land. Carlyle was selected for around 1,384 acres at Fort Bliss, Texas, while CyrusOne, jointly owned by KKR and BlackRock, has been chosen for the site at Dugway. The Financial Times estimates that these projects will each cost about $2 billion.

Under this arrangement, the firms are responsible for financing, constructing, maintaining, and eventually dismantling the facilities, with no initial cost to the taxpayers involved. In return, the Army gains access to computing resources. This initiative is part of the Army's Enhanced Use Lease program, which follows a Trump-era executive order to utilize non-excess federal land for data center development. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is managing the leasing and environmental review processes.

"AI is a strategic asset for the Army," stated Army Secretary Dan Driscoll during the announcement in March. He emphasized that such technology serves as a force multiplier, assisting in future transformations and ensuring the Army stays ahead of its adversaries. Driscoll remarked to the Wall Street Journal that the facility at Fort Bliss will be the first hyper-scale data center to be developed by the Pentagon.

Currently, only Fort Bliss and Dugway have been formally selected, with their deals still subject to negotiation. The Army is also exploring potential data center sites at Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 2025, the Department of the Air Force issued calls for private AI data center projects on unused land at various bases, including Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee, Edwards Air Force Base in California, and others.

While Dugway is intentionally isolated, the proximity of other proposed sites to residential areas raises concerns. For instance, documents indicate that one potential site at Fort Hood is less than a mile from residential and commercial properties, while several locations at Fort Bragg are similarly close to civilian spaces.

The presence of data centers has sparked controversy in the civilian sector, with nearly $156 billion in projects across the country being delayed or canceled due to local opposition. In Virginia, home to the highest concentration of data facilities in the world, a state-funded study projected that residents' monthly energy costs could rise significantly by 2040.

Mitigating these concerns, Army officials express their commitment to engaging local communities effectively. Col. John Oliver, an executive officer in the Army, emphasized the importance of collaboration with surrounding communities to develop mutually beneficial solutions. “Unlike companies like Meta or Google, we are part of these communities and will regularly engage with them,” he stated.

The Army's data center projects are subject to two unique requirements not typically found in standard commercial developments. Proposals must incorporate net-zero water usage and devise a power plan independent of the local electricity grid. Bidders are also tasked with outlining their local engagement strategies and assessing potential risks or opposition to the projects.

Data from the Defense Department indicates that the El Paso area faces "Extremely High" water risk, given that data centers utilize substantial amounts of water for cooling. Fort Bliss has emerged as a primary focus for the Army's initiative, with plans to make it a net-positive contributor to local resources. Recent discussions have included innovative ideas like drilling a new well to aid the city’s desalination plant, thereby offsetting the water consumption of the data center.

Experts in the field, such as Darrell M. West from the Brookings Institution, commend this proactive approach. Communities that have welcomed data centers are typically those who were fully informed about project details ahead of time.

On the legislative side, Rep. Cory Mills, a Republican from Florida, has proposed an amendment within the House's fiscal 2027 defense authorization bill that would prohibit the Defense Department from leasing land for data centers unless developers ensure that no components from nations like China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea are involved. This includes essential electronics that the department considers to pose security risks.

Conversely, the Army has raised concerns that such conditions could hinder development by imposing regulations on projects that would not apply to similar developments elsewhere. They advocate for fostering incentives that attract firms to build on secure federal land, rather than creating barriers that deter potential developers.

Meanwhile, Rep. John Garamendi, a Democrat from California, has advocated for thorough assessments of energy, water usage, air and light pollution, and security implications before data center contracts are finalized. His proposals were not met with support among Republican members, who questioned their feasibility.

While the dialogue continues, only two projects have made significant progress thus far, with both still conditional. Fort Bliss is projected to achieve initial operational capabilities by fiscal 2027, with Dugway following in fiscal 2029. Plans involve creating a campus featuring both commercial and classified military data operations, along with independent power generation.

The environmental reviews for both awarded sites are being conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers. Developers are required to implement self-sufficient power solutions that avoid reliance on local grids, while adhering to the strict net-zero water standards. Any power generated beyond on-site needs might be sold back to local power grids.

Further discussions on military data center development are anticipated during the Installation Innovation Forum scheduled for October 2026, providing a platform for stakeholders to address ongoing challenges in this evolving sector.

It is one of at least a dozen military installations the Army and the Department of the Air Force have opened to commercial data center developers over the past year and a half. Two of those deals are real; the rest are still proposals.

Land-for-Computing

In late March, the Army conditionally selected two companies to enter exclusive negotiations to build and operate commercial hyperscale data centers on Army land.

Carlyle, the global investment firm, was picked for roughly 1,384 acres at Fort Bliss, Texas. CyrusOne, a data center operator jointly held by funds managed by KKR and BlackRock, was picked for the parcel at Dugway. Each project is estimated to cost about $2 billion, according to the Financial Times.

The companies will be responsible for financing, building, operating, maintaining and eventually decommissioning the facilities, the Army said, on what it called "underutilized but non-excess Army land at no upfront cost to taxpayers." In exchange for the land, the service gets access to computing power.

It all runs through the Army's Enhanced Use Lease program, driven by a Trump executive order directing agencies to open non-excess federal land to data center development. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is handling lease negotiations and environmental review.

"AI is a strategic asset for the Army," Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said in the March announcement. "It is a force multiplier, supports future transformation and requirements, keeps the Army ahead of our adversaries, and generates resiliency across the force." Driscoll told the Wall Street Journal that the Fort Bliss facility would be "the first hyper-scale data center that the Pentagon has ever done."

Which Bases and How Close to Housing?

Only Fort Bliss and Dugway have been awarded so far, and even those remain conditional, pending negotiation. Beyond them, federal contracting documents show the Army considering data centers at Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Bragg, N.C.

The Department of the Air Force put out its own call in 2025 for private AI data center projects on unused land at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., and Robins Air Force Base, Ga.

More recently, it sought bidders for facilities at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base and Clear Space Force Station in Alaska. Acreage varies enormously; for example, Fort Hood has 207 acres on offer. Fort Bliss has nearly seven times that.

Dugway is remote by design, although not every site is. Contracting documents show the Army weighing a parcel at Fort Hood within a half-mile of residential and commercial property, and several potential locations at Fort Bragg within one mile of civilian areas and a half-mile of civilian housing.

Proximity to the population is what has made data centers a heated topic in the civilian world. Nearly $156 billion in projects nationwide have been delayed or canceled after local opposition, according to Data Center Watch.

In Virginia, which holds the world's highest concentration of the facilities, a state-funded study found residents' monthly energy bills could rise by $14 to $37 by 2040.

Army Officials Say They're Ready

"So I think the difference between us, the Army, doing a data center, and say Meta or Google, is we're part of the communities that are there, and we are going to engage with them on a routine and regular basis to look for solutions that work for everyone, right?" Col. John Oliver, executive officer for Deputy Army Under Secretary Dave Fitzgerald, told Defense One. "Because, yes, we understand that there's been consternation with data centers."

Two requirements attached to these projects do not apply to commercial builds off base. Proposals must include net-zero water usage and a power plan that does not draw on the local electrical grid. Bidders were also required to describe plans for "local outreach and engagement" and to assess "any risks or opposition" to the project.

The Defense Department's own procurement documents, obtained by the trade publication Data Center Dynamics, rate the water risk for the El Paso area as "Extremely High." Data centers consume water to cool their servers. Fort Bliss is where the Army wants its flagship.

Army officials want the project to be a net contributor rather than a net drain. In the spring, Fitzgerald traveled to Fort Bliss for a listening session with the commander of the 1st Armored Division, community members, El Paso Water, El Paso Electric and Carlyle. One idea on the table is having the developer drill a new well to feed the city's desalination plant, offsetting what the data center uses.

"We are encouraging Carlyle to do that, so actually make it net-positive," Oliver told Defense One. "We don't know if that's an engineering solution that we can actually get to yet, but we're actively working toward that as a part of the process."

Darrell M. West, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who studies data center development, said the approach is sound, and that communities which have accepted the facilities tend to be the ones told the full details in advance.

"People want to know up-front, you know, where the energy is coming from, how much water is being used, how much the overall cost is going to be, and what the noise levels are," West said.

Congress Not Settled

Rep. Cory Mills, a Florida Republican, secured a provision in the House version of the fiscal 2027 defense authorization bill. This bill bars the Defense Department from leasing land for data centers unless developers agree not to install equipment containing components made in China, Russia, Iran or North Korea. The restriction covers certain printed circuit boards, advanced semiconductors and chipsets the department considers a security risk.

"Honored to pass this amendment to protect our military installations from Chinese components being used in data centers on our installations," Mills wrote on X.

The Army objected. The measure would create a "federal land penalty," a service official told Federal News Network, imposing rules on companies building on installations that would not apply to identical projects built anywhere else. "We want Congress to incentivize companies to build on secure federal land, rather than creating barriers that drive them away," the official said.

Rep. John Garamendi, a California Democrat, proposed requiring the Pentagon to evaluate a data center's energy and water consumption, noise and light pollution, and effects on security and supply chains before finalizing any deal. House Armed Services Republicans rejected it.

"We're not opposed to data centers," Garamendi said. "We just want to make sure that if we're going to put a data center on a federal facility, that federal facility is not going to be degraded by the data center."

His questions were installation questions. "Is there encroachment on training and operations and the physical and supply chain of security?" he asked.

Senate Armed Services Republicans defeated a separate Democratic amendment that would have blocked leasing until the Pentagon finalizes a data center strategy. House appropriators, meanwhile, adopted language acknowledging that data centers "place significant strain on energy and water resources and communities have resisted such projects."

Available Information

For anyone stationed at or living near one of these installations, several things are known for sure. Only two projects have been awarded, and both remain conditional. Fort Hood, Fort Bragg and the Air Force sites are solicitations, not commitments.

Initial operating capability at Fort Bliss is projected for fiscal 2027 and at Dugway for fiscal 2029. That is when the first capability comes online, not when a finished campus exists. Oliver has described the long-term vision as a campus with a commercial side, a classified military data side, and onsite power generation.

The Army Corps of Engineers is conducting the environmental review at both awarded sites. Developers must build independent power that does not tap the local grid and meet net-zero water usage. Excess power generated on base could potentially be sold back to civilian grids.

The Association of Defense Communities has scheduled further discussion of military data center development at its Installation Innovation Forum in October 2026.

Pentagon Plans AI Data Centers at Military Bases Across Multiple Branches

Steve Eisman, the investor renowned for his role in "The Big Short," recently revealed that he has scaled back his investments in artificial intelligence, having sold his long-standing shares in Alphabet. He cautiously suggested that investors might be underestimating the potential pitfalls should the anticipated AI expansion not meet the high expectations set by the market. During an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Eisman stated, "I've lightened up. I sold my Google a couple of months ago. I've owned Google for such a long time." His decision comes as the technology sector experiences a slight pullback, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite experiencing consecutive weekly declines of 0.6% and 2.1%, respectively.

Open Research Enhances Cybersecurity and AI Safety

An AI agent isn’t just a language model. It is a complex system built from models, harnesses and guardrails.

Real AI safety and security depend on the full agent stack — identity, permissions, harnesses, guardrails, logs and evaluation — not just on whether model weights are open or closed. Open harnesses and tools make those controls easier for many defenders to inspect, test and improve.

NVIDIA is contributing open models, model weights, data and new agent harness research to the Open Secure AI Alliance to speed the development of new cybersecurity tools and techniques.

The new open source NVIDIA Labs Object-Oriented Agent (NOOA) project is now available on GitHub to make advanced AI safety capabilities more accessible for agent harnesses. The NOOA research framework enables harnesses to better integrate with models to make agent behavior easier to test, trace, audit and govern.

Across the Alliance, contributors are building an open defense stack for agents — from identity and isolation to safe model formats, multi-model scanning and secure coding workflows.

HPE contributes to SPIFFE/SPIRE, which creates zero-trust identity framework standards and methods that can cryptographically verify AI agents and services to ensure only authorized workloads communicate and access enterprise resources.

Hugging Face has offered Safetensors — a safe format to store AI model weights, providing transparency and guarantees of no remote code execution — to the PyTorch Foundation.

IBM and Red Hat’s Lightwell extends security across the open source supply chain with digitally signed patches.

Microsoft’s MDASH multi-model agentic scanning harness orchestrates specialized AI agents to discover, debate and prove exploitable bugs.

SpaceXAI has open sourced the Grok Build terminal-based AI coding agent to promote trust, transparency and new capabilities, and plans to open source the weights of the Grok line of models to support the developer and research communities.

A Call to Policymakers and Regulators

As policymakers and regulators grapple with AI safety, it will be crucial to recognize open models, harnesses and security tooling as defensive assets, not liabilities, in AI and cybersecurity policy. Blanket restrictions on open frontier AI systems would weaken defensive capacity and risk concentrating power, dependence and vulnerability in a few closed providers.

Companies and governments should invest in shared open infrastructure for AI defense — datasets, evaluation frameworks, attack simulators and red-teaming tools — much as past generations invested in open source software.

The Future We Should Build

The age of AI agents can be one of resilience and shared security. With the right choices, open secure AI systems can give defenders the tools they need, strengthen competition, extend technological leadership and ensure that the safety and security of this extraordinary technology are built in the open for everyone.

That future will not be secured by assuming that secrecy alone is safety. It will be secured by building systems that are strong enough to withstand scrutiny, flexible enough to be improved and open enough to mobilize the full community of defenders.

A significant flow of investment is now redirecting toward a select number of companies spearheading the military's AI transformation.

Historically, warfare relied heavily on physical assets such as tanks, aircraft, artillery, and armament, predominantly manufactured by a small group of prime contractors through extended government programs. Additionally, ground troops were essential on the battlefield.

While this traditional model continues to exist, the emphasis on software is rapidly growing. Increasingly, military personnel are engaging in combat operations via screens.

The military AI sector now includes a broad range of technologies, from cloud computing services to autonomous drones and advanced decision-making software. This evolution can be traced back to the U.S. drone initiatives of the early 2000s and 2010s, which effectively integrated screen-based operations into modern warfare.

Currently, billions of dollars are pouring into leading companies at the forefront of military AI, signifying a shift from the traditional military-industrial complex to a modern military-tech ecosystem. Al Jazeera is examining the key players in this emerging landscape as part of a series focusing on AI's role in warfare.

So, who are these key players?

On July 10, the UK Ministry of Defence entered into a £2 billion ($2.7 billion) contract with Omnia Training, led by Raytheon UK, to train 60,000 soldiers annually on AI applications aimed at creating a “combat-ready” military. Shortly before this, NATO awarded contracts to U.S. tech firm Anduril to operate its Enhanced Air Command and Control Data Platform utilizing Lattice AI software, alongside the U.S. company Palantir and the French joint venture Athea SAS. Lattice leverages AI and computer vision to compile data from diverse sources into a cohesive, real-time overview.

Although many original developers of AI technology were initially resistant to military applications, OpenAI retracted its ban on military uses in 2024. This year has also seen legal complications arising from partnerships between Palantir and Anthropic regarding the deployment of AI models in military contexts.

That paradigm is not disappearing, but software is becoming increasingly central to it. And now, more soldiers are fighting wars through a screen.

The military AI industry now encompasses everything from cloud computing to autonomous drones and decision-making software. This shift traces back to the US drone programme of the 2000s and 2010s, which turned remote, screen-based killing into a feature of how wars would be fought.

Who are these companies?

With wars raging from Ukraine to the Middle East, deals like these are multiplying fast, and the industry itself is evolving just as quickly – traditional arms firms and new entrants alike are jostling for a slice of the market. One way to make sense of this shifting landscape is to look at where companies sit based on their business models.

Researchers at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) mapped the AI military industry, grouping firms into four categories based on their role in the industry:

Defence primes: traditional arms companies

Neoprimes or defence startups: newer firms specialising in software for the military industry

Big tech: tech giants that have massive cloud/computing capacity

Foundational model providers: frontier AI labs building advanced AI models

Below, we outline what each of these does, according to SIPRI’s analysis, and which companies occupy each category.

Defence primes/contractors

These are the long-established arms manufacturers that have supplied militaries with systems and hardware for decades, and are now layering AI onto those existing systems.

The largest of these firms include Lockheed Martin Corp, RTX, Northrop Grumman Corp, BAE Systems and General Dynamics Corp, all of which hit all-time highs after the onset of the US-Israel war on Iran.

Part of that rally reflects how deeply AI is now being woven into these old guard arms companies’ own product lines. In February, Lockheed Martin announced that it was flight-testing an AI tool for its F-35 fighter jets to help pilots identify hostile aircraft faster. L3Harris, another American defence firm, built AI directly into its camera systems for real-time targeting. It is also fitted with platforms like Shield AI‘s Tracker, which helps detect hostile drones. Shield AI is a US defence-tech company building autonomous AI pilots for military aircraft and drones.

Neoprimes or defence startups

This newer category, sometimes referred to as “neoprimes”, is software-first firms, selling specialised data products to the arms market as well as policing and border forces.

Palantir is perhaps the best-known name among such firms, largely through its role in Project Maven, the Pentagon’s flagship military AI programme. It is designed to speed up decision-making in battle, relying on AI and machine learning to automatically sift through satellite imagery, drone videos, and signals intelligence to identify and prioritise targets.

The system is being used in various conflicts, including the Ukraine war and US-Israel war on Iran — Maven identified 1,000 targets in the first 24 hours of the latter conflict.

A direct competitor to Maven is Anduril’s Lattice platform, which ties its own hardware – drones, sensor towers, autonomous vehicles – into a single command network, with it being heavily utilised by the US Army.

Big tech

Companies like Google, Meta and Amazon Web Services (AWS), which control roughly 67 percent of the global cloud infrastructure market, are increasingly linked to military applications that traditional defence contractors are providing.

In May, the US Department of Defense announced a new agreement with eight tech and AI companies to use their technologies for its classified networks.

The agreements with SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft, Oracle and AWS were brokered to “accelerate the transformation towards establishing the United States military as an AI-first fighting force”.

The deal has meant these companies have been cleared for IL6 and IL7 networks, the most sensitive and classified computing environments the Department of Defense operates.

Foundational model providers

The final category is firms that build the underlying AI models that other companies integrate into military tools, such as OpenAI and Anthropic in the US and Mistral AI in Europe. Chinese researchers have been developing AI models for military use since the early 2020s, including using Meta’s Llama model as the base for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) tool called ChatBIT, which was designed to gather intelligence and support decision-making in the field, according to Reuters.

The Pentagon estimated Chinese military AI spending comparable to American figures, about $1.5 to $2bn annually.

This year the Pentagon added Alibaba, Baidu, BYD, NIO, RoboSense and Unitree to its Chinese military companies list, according to Reuters. According to the Pentagon, these firms are believed to be helping the military in China.

Smaller Chinese AI firms tied to ex-Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent employees have been building targeting, surveillance and decision-making tools for the military, according to a 2021 report by the Centre for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET).

Many of these frontier AI labs were against their products being used in militaries; however, in 2024 OpenAI got rid of its military-use ban, and in the same year Palantir and Anthropic partnered up in what is now a relationship fraught with lawsuits over how Claude was being used by the US military.

The AI military complex: Which are the main companies in it?

On Sunday, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to unleash an astonishing 43 AI-generated images, targeting his critics and even threatening Iran. This latest flurry of posts included various deepfakes and caricatures, showcasing Trump alongside former presidents such as John F. Kennedy and George Washington, despite previous backlash over his use of AI content.

The posting marathon lasted from 11:16 a.m. to 5:16 p.m. ET, starting with an image that transformed CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins into social media figure Dylan Mulvaney—echoing a jab he made during a past White House Correspondents' Dinner. Trump continued with satirical AI drawings that poked fun at notable figures, including Bruce Springsteen, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and comedian Rosie O'Donnell. He even depicted late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Fallon in comical scenarios where they were broke and begging, despite the fact that both Kimmel and Fallon still have active shows.

Additionally, he issued a series of deepfake threat images against Iran, illustrating U.S. forces attacking Kharg Island and seizing Iranian oil tankers. Amid these posts, Trump also revived the notion of running for the presidency in 2028, an ambition restricted by constitutional term limits.

Several posts portrayed Trump as a pivotal leader comparable to historical figures. One AI-generated image branded "America First" featured Trump alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton. In another, a contemporary image showed Trump next to John F. Kennedy without any explanation. The final post was a fictional movie poster titled “Trump X Washington,” suggesting that Trump was rescuing Washington.

In the midst of his AI flurry, Trump included a bar graph that criticized Senate Majority Leader John Thune, comparing the number of recess appointments made during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to the zero made during his own term. Notably, the post omitted that no such appointments occurred during former President Joe Biden’s administration. Another entry presented Trump as a doctor pointing at a spine, with the caption implying that he aimed to restore integrity within the Republican Party.

Trump's frequent deployment of AI-created imagery on Truth Social has sparked significant controversy over the past year. A notable incident occurred in April when he shared an image portraying himself as Jesus Christ, which drew considerable criticism from various groups, resulting in its deletion. Shortly after, he posted another AI-generated image showing him with Jesus against the backdrop of the American flag. A running theme of some of the posts made by Trump appeared to show him as the savior of the country on par with other important former presidents. One AI-generated poster labeled “America First” depicts Trump being flanked by three people who appear to be George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Another deepfake shows a present-day Trump standing next to John F. Kennedy in front of the White House—with no accompanying caption or context. The last of the 43 posts is a fake AI-generated movie poster titled “Trump X Washington”, showing Trump saving George Washington.

In the middle of the AI posting spree, Trump shared a bar graph that attacked Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. The graph titled “ Where is John Thune ” compared the hundreds of recess appointments made during the terms of President Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush with zero made during Trump’s term. Recess appointments are temporary appointments made by a president for vacant federal roles when the Senate is in recess. The post failed to mention that zero recess appointments were made during former President Joe Biden’s term as well. This was followed by another apparent AI-generated post of Trump as a doctor pointing at a human spine and the caption: “You see this spine? This is what I want to put back in Republicans.”

The president’s frequent use of AI-generated imagery in his Truth Social posts has been the subject of multiple controversies in the past year and has resulted in backlash. The biggest such controversy erupted in April when the president shared a post depicting himself as Jesus Christ , amid a very public feud with Pope Leo XIV. The post faced immediate pushback from various groups, including some prominent Republicans, prompting Trump to delete it. A few days later, the president posted another AI image showing him embraced by Jesus in front of an American flag. Trump has also shared several of the AI-generated images depicting himself and other members of his cabinet swimming in the renovated Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool and presenting the landmark as a sewer under previous Democratic administrations. These posts were made before the president’s own renovation efforts ran into issues with algae and peeling paint. The video included deepfakes of Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell, actors Robert De Niro, Julia Roberts, Edward Norton, and John Leguizamo.

Research reveals that these AI-generated accounts have propagated unfounded cancer myths, such as claims that microwaving food in plastic, using deodorants, and sleeping next to a phone could lead to cancer—assertions that organizations like Cancer Research UK have thoroughly debunked.

This month, Hallam, a digital marketing firm, released findings that show AI-generated content constitutes about 40% of the most popular health-related videos on TikTok. A worrying trend is the increase in deepfake influencer accounts designed to mimic real medical professionals, with a staggering 84% of videos classified as AI-generated or assisted for popular search terms like “health tips.”

Hallam's study revealed that leading AI-generated health videos garnered an average of 2.5 million views. Following complaints from the Guardian, TikTok removed some of these questionable videos from its platform. Additionally, these accounts promoted outlandish health remedies, such as a mixture of Coca-Cola and onion to relieve pain and a fictitious product called "Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max" touted as an anti-aging solution.

One of these AI-generated avatars claimed to have recommended "Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max" to countless patients, stating it could alleviate "hair loss, skin weakening, brittle nails, and joint pain" by enhancing the body's production of “anti-aging molecules.” However, the Guardian found no evidence supporting the existence of the "Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max" product online.

In light of these findings, Prof. Frankie Swords, NHS England's national medical director, expressed concern over the rise of online misinformation. She noted that numerous healthcare professionals report seeing increasing instances of patients feeling anxious and confused due to misleading advice crafted purely for clicks.

Prof. Victoria Tzortziou Brown, president of the Royal College of GPs, echoed these sentiments, stating that misleading AI content poses a “real risk” of harm.

Hallam reviewed a total of 1,198 videos by selecting the top 50 across various health-related search terms, also assessing the impact of advice on broader issues like personal finance and education.

Alex Ruani, a health misinformation researcher at UCL, remarked on the "frightening amount of exposure to fake medical content" represented by the surge of AI-generated doctor videos, warning of the "industrialized exploitation of trust."

A survey from Savanta, conducted on behalf of Healthwatch England, revealed that approximately one in five individuals are seeking health information via social media. Misleading health claims online pose a “huge danger to public safety”, experts have warned, after research has shown that AI-generated doctors are gaining millions of views on TikTok by spreading dubious health advice.

The British Medical Association council deputy chair, Dr Emma Runswick, flagged the risks posed by AI accounts that “peddle medical myths and promote so-called miracle cures”.

“Platforms like TikTok must do more to stop the rise of dangerous fake medical advice … otherwise, it is the public who could be paying the price with their health and perhaps even their lives,” she added.

AI-generated physicians were found to have spread disproven myths about cancer, including that microwaving food in plastic, using deodorants and sleeping next to your phone could all cause cancer – all claims which have been refuted by Cancer Research UK.

The research was published this month by Hallam, a digital marketing agency. It follows warnings by the NHS that health misinformation on social media was a “real threat to public health”.

The research found that AI-generated content appeared in 40% of top health-related TikTok videos, with most posted by a growing number of deepfake influencer accounts designed to resemble real doctors. For some specific search terms, such as “health tips”, 84% of videos were classed as AI-generated or AI-assisted content.

According to Hallam, top AI-generated doctor and health videos in their search received an average of 2.5m views. TikTok took down examples of the videos that were sent to the platform by the Guardian.

The accounts also promoted bizarre remedies for various health problems, including Coca-Cola mixed with onion as a pain-relief remedy and a fake product called “Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max” as an anti-ageing solution.

One avatar claimed he had recommended “Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max” to his patients for years, and that it could combat “hair loss, skin weakening, brittle nails and joint pain” by helping the body produce “anti-ageing molecules naturally”. The Guardian could not find evidence of “Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max” products online.

In response to the findings, Prof Frankie Swords, the national medical director at NHS England, said it was concerning to see a rise in online medical misinformation. “Many clinicians are reporting an increasing number of patients who feel worried and confused due to false advice that has been made solely for clicks,” she added.

Prof Victoria Tzortziou Brown, the president of the Royal College of GPs, said she was also concerned by the research, adding that misleading AI content carried a “real risk” of harm.

Hallam analysed 1,198 videos, selecting the top 50 videos across a series of search terms including “health tips” and “doctor advice”. It also looked for general “life-impacting” advice on issues such as personal finance and education.

Alex Ruani, health misinformation researcher at UCL, said the rise of AI doctor videos represented a “frightening amount of exposure to fake medical content”.

“We’re looking at industrialised exploitation of trust,” she added.

Last year, a poll conducted by Savanta on 3,575 men and 3,832 women aged 18 and above in England on behalf of patient champion Healthwatch England found that about one in five people were using social media for health information.

William Pett, interim director of policy and public affairs at Healthwatch England, said: “Without the skills to distinguish reliable information from commercial hype or misinformation, [people] risk being misled in ways that can seriously affect their health.”

A TikTok spokesperson said: “These findings from a marketing agency with commercial interests are not an accurate reflection of our platform.”

“The facts are that we remove harmful health misinformation, including when it’s AI-generated, we partner with the World Health Organization and the NHS on providing reliable health information in-app, and we continually invest in AI literacy resources and labelling technologies.”

Upon completion of this transaction, Nvidia is expected to acquire a 4.5% ownership stake in Naver.
