Wall Street started the third quarter on a mixed note after a remarkably strong first half of the year for stock performance. In the initial two days of Q3, the S&P 500 remained relatively unchanged while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq had diverging paths. The Dow capped off a short trading week with a record high close on Thursday, buoyed by a softer-than-expected jobs report that dampened speculations about an imminent interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Conversely, the Nasdaq faced consecutive losses, with semiconductor stocks, as indexed by the PHLX Semiconductor Index, dropping 6.3% on Wednesday and another 5.4% on Thursday. However, despite the tepid start to July characterized by a shift towards new AI-driven stocks, all three benchmarks posted gains for the week. As the markets closed on Friday in observance of Independence Day, it felt like there were fireworks in the market.

The first half of 2026 proved to be exhilarating for stock performance, with the S&P 500 climbing 9.6% and the Nasdaq exceeding 12%. The Dow registered its most impressive first-half growth since 2021, marking an 8.9% increase. Small-cap stocks, particularly the Russell 2000, experienced a remarkable surge of nearly 22%, representing the best start to any year since 1991. This week provided an in-depth look at the forces propelling the market forward, including insights into four trade alerts shared with membership.

Cybersecurity stocks emerged as standout winners this week, riding the wave of enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence—a stark contrast to the earlier fears of AI-induced disruptions. Following a report from The Wall Street Journal indicating that Chinese AI models are rapidly catching up to U.S. technology in identifying code vulnerabilities, investors shifted their perspective, now viewing the landscape as an opportunity for heightened spending on cybersecurity solutions. Industry leaders such as Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike reached new all-time highs during the week, reflecting this trend. The CNBC Investing Club capitalized on a significant rally in Palo Alto by reducing our stake, securing gains of nearly 150%, while retaining a solid long-term belief in the company. Further, a boost came on Wednesday when the U.S. lifted export restrictions on Anthropic's key AI models. By the end of the week, Palo Alto and CrowdStrike had risen by 14.5% and 10.7%, respectively.

In another significant development, Meta Platforms showcased potential new revenue streams in relation to its substantial investments in artificial intelligence. Shares of the social media giant soared over 8% on Wednesday following news that it is gearing up to introduce a cloud services business aimed at offering surplus AI computing power and models to external clients. Despite rising scrutiny about its extensive capital expenditure on data centers and AI infrastructure, the company had primarily defended this spending by emphasizing enhancements to its advertising revenue. Investor confidence was waning, leading many, including Jim, to advocate for Meta’s entry into the cloud market. This move could position Meta against leading competitors such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. There's still much to ascertain—particularly whether Meta intends to offer mere computing capacity or establish a comprehensive cloud service. Regardless, this shift signals to Wall Street that Meta is addressing investor concerns and striving to maximize its AI infrastructure.

Further adjustments took place within the CNBC Investing Club portfolio this week, as we strategically reallocated funds into our highest-conviction assets while taking profits from stocks that exceeded expectations. On the sell side, we exited our position in Nike, assessing that the turnaround would take longer than initially anticipated. While the company has made strides in managing inventory and improving margins, we chose to realize our losses and redirect those funds into companies with clearer growth trajectories. We also trimmed successful positions, including the sale of some Palo Alto shares and a reduction in our stake in Corning after its stock skyrocketed over 200% this year. Corning remains a favored player in the AI infrastructure space, but our strategy dictates taking profits on overextended positions.

The proceeds from these adjustments were used to enhance our investments in two prospects with significant upside potential. We increased our stakes in FedEx and the newly separated FedEx Freight, utilizing approximately half of the cash from the Nike sale. We believe FedEx is underappreciated in the market, particularly regarding its recovering parcel business, which is benefiting from increased demand across sectors such as healthcare, aerospace, automotive, and AI-related logistics. Simultaneously, FedEx Freight is just beginning its journey as an independent entity, granting management the ability to optimize margins as the freight market shows initial signs of recovery. Goldman Sachs corroborated this perspective by initiating coverage with a buy rating and a target price of $186.
