A restaurant in San Francisco is encountering criticism after the owners opted to use artificial intelligence for creating images of their menu offerings. These images were displayed in the restaurant's window, but the reaction was not what they had anticipated, leading to negative reviews and even acts of vandalism.
Lyndsey Lozano and her husband recently launched Grind and Unwind, a new establishment that emphasizes freshly brewed coffee and homemade pastries crafted by Lozano, complemented by a selection of bar drinks.
“We’re situated in a popular tourist area, so we thought it would be a good idea to put up some visuals and signs to raise awareness about our offerings. It was intended as a temporary display to announce our presence, but the feedback was unexpected,” Lozano remarked.
After showcasing a sign featuring AI-generated images of their food and beverages, the couple was met with an influx of comments online. “Many people reacted by saying, ‘If that’s how your food looks, I’m not interested in dining there.’ We understood that it was AI-driven; we weren’t trying to mislead anyone. Yet, some viewers questioned the effort we were putting into our business,” she explained.
Not long ago, someone vandalized the restaurant by spray-painting what appeared to be the word “seriously” on the exterior. They have since covered it up, and Lozano decided to remove the AI-generated menu from view. Looking ahead, she is now placing her freshly baked pastries in the window for passersby to see.
“Our primary focus is on showcasing our quality pastries and coffee, and we have an outstanding burger on the menu as well,” Lozano expressed. “We aim to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for locals to gather, enjoy each other’s company, and savor our delicious baked goods.”
