Sacramento International Airport has introduced an innovative AI-driven system to enhance curbside monitoring and alleviate congestion in its pickup and drop-off zones. This marks a significant milestone as it becomes the first airport in the United States to implement such advanced technology for enforcing curbside regulations.
In collaboration with Automotus, this new system employs advanced camera technology to oversee 28 designated curbside areas at both Terminals A and B. Upon a vehicle entering one of these zones, the system activates a four-minute timer. If the vehicle exceeds this time limit, it automatically captures images of the vehicle, reads its license plate, and sends an instant notification to airport personnel.
Ciara Gamble, the Landside Operations Manager, revealed that the system underwent a trial phase at Terminal A, which began in September 2025, before its successful rollout at both terminals. During the pilot, the average time vehicles spent curbside was approximately 5 minutes and 44 seconds, a figure that has now been significantly reduced to about 1 minute and 45 seconds.
Importantly, the AI system does not autonomously issue citations. Instead, airport officers are dispatched to assess the situation, speak with the driver, and determine if a citation is necessary. If a citation is deemed appropriate, it is then processed digitally and mailed to the registered vehicle owner, with initial fines starting at $57.50 that may increase for late payments.
Beyond citation enforcement, airport officials emphasize that this cutting-edge technology will also gather traffic data, aiding in the optimization of future curbside operations and contributing to long-term planning initiatives for the airport.
