OpenAI has been ramping up its creator marketing efforts as AI safety concerns take center stage.

The company isn't asking influencers to assuage fears that a rogue AI could destroy humanity. Instead, it's prompting them to showcase why ChatGPT is "cool," per one influencer talent manager, or how it can support work that's "good for the world," according to one campaign pitch viewed by Business Insider.

OpenAI doubled the number of sponsored Instagram posts promoting ChatGPT from 61 in June to 122 in July, and then increased it further to 141 in August, according to data compiled by the influencer marketing platform HypeAuditor.

Business Insider reviewed dozens of sponsored posts for OpenAI's ChatGPT product, and spoke with six managers and creators who had worked with the company. The company is casting a wide net, reaching out to parenting and fitness influencers as well as tech-savvy creators to broaden its user base and grow its advertising business.

OpenAI's influencer strategy can be split into two buckets: getting businesses to pay for enterprise tools and keeping millions of consumers coming back to ChatGPT.

Working with OpenAI can be risky for creators. Some influencers who post sponsored content for AI companies are getting dragged by their audiences. A small group of creators who attended an OpenAI brand trip in August were told their content was "morally bankrupt" and "dystopian" in their comments sections.

That hasn't stopped companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Higgsfield AI from pitching influencers.

"In the five inboxes that I manage alone, every single day, I would say at least 15 emails are from an AI company or some AI feature," Amanda Acevedo, a talent manager at G&B Digital Management, told Business Insider.

Creator Natasha Badger, who makes content about marketing and tech, said it was a "big war" between AI companies over "who can get the most market share and work with the most influencers."

Founders-turned-influencers have been the cream of the crop for OpenAI's #ad strategy.

Acevedo said the company is keen on working with creators who can tell a vivid story about how they're strategically using AI to "build an actual business."

Badger, for instance, worked with OpenAI in July to promote its ChatGPT Work tools. She's one of many influencer-entrepreneurs the AI company is casting in short-form video ads across Instagram and TikTok. In the sponsored post, Badger walks through how she used ChatGPT to build a presentation.

"Most people following any of us have ChatGPT already," Badger said. "They don't need to convert users. It's more getting people to continue going to ChatGPT as your go-to LLM."

OpenAI has been open to hearing influencers' content ideas rather than pushing a narrow script, insiders who've worked on campaigns said.

"They want it to be catered to a specific use case that resonates with our lives and day-to-day," Badger said.

OpenAI's influencer strategy, however, is growing well beyond B2B marketing.

At the start of September, The Shade Room — a meme page with over 28 million Instagram followers — shared a sponsored post with ChatGPT. It wasn't a demo of how AI could streamline your workflow. It was a word search puzzle generated by ChatGPT.

One talent manager said OpenAI representatives had expressed interest in working with fitness creators, since health and running questions are such common use cases for ChatGPT.

Acevedo said there's one key message AI brands across the board are pushing with creators: AI is an assistant, "not a replacement."

"I'm still her mom and her teachers are still her teachers — this isn't replacing any of that," Dove emphasized in her video.

OpenAI is beefing up its influencer resources

As OpenAI hires more influencers, it's building a team of tech veterans who know the inner workings of creator partnerships.

OpenAI has hired a handful of talent from platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat, according to a review of OpenAI staffers' LinkedIn profiles. Most visibly, in February, OpenAI poached Charles Porch, Instagram's longtime head of partnerships.

The AI company has also tapped the influencer marketing agency Viral Nation — which has worked with major tech companies like Meta, Google, and Uber — to handle elements of its creator campaigns.

One job of these longtime influencer marketers is to make creators feel like AI isn't the enemy.

"There is so much tension between AI and the creator economy," Acevedo said.

She sees commissioning sponsored posts as a way for OpenAI to "help bridge that gap — that we're not against each other."

Simon Machado of ETH Zurich remarked that the endeavor felt “shrouded in mystery,” with uncertainty around how the members were chosen. The group's sparse website mentions that it formed after OpenAI reached out to some mathematicians, who then decided to establish an independent entity, but specifics about member selection remain unclear.

Martin Hairer, one of the advisory group members, addressed concerns in a blog post, calling out a “torrent of misinformation” regarding its origins. On Monday, the company announced a new independent panel of mathematicians tasked with advising it and other AI companies on their interactions with mathematical research and the wider mathematics community, including how new results are presented and released. Its abrupt arrival caught many mathematicians by surprise. Researchers told The Verge the group is a good first step, but many said they were left with basic questions about what it will actually do, how much influence it will have, and whether OpenAI will actually listen to it, as well as concerns over whether such a small group of prominent researchers can represent the wider mathematical community.

The nine-member group is stacked with who researchers described to The Verge as celebrities in the field, drawn from institutions including Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge, with multiple Fields Medals and MacArthur “genius grants” among them. It will be hosted by Princeton, New Jersey’s Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), one of the world’s most revered centers of mathematical research and the former intellectual home of figures including Albert Einstein, John von Neumann, and J. Robert Oppenheimer.

OpenAI said the group, called the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI), will operate independently, with the freedom to offer advice the company has not requested, publicly comment on its impact on mathematics, and make its advice public, though it did not provide details on what this may entail. It appears that the group will be granted early access to OpenAI’s research in order to fulfill its task. Members will not be paid by OpenAI and the group can change its membership as it sees fit, OpenAI said. “Its value depends on its members being able to exercise their own judgement and challenge ours,” the company said. “The group will advise on the review and communication of emerging results: they will help OpenAI assess their significance, advise on how to coordinate their dissemination, and advise on academic and professional standards of mathematical research. It will also advise on how our tools can support mathematical research and learning.”

For all the emphasis on independence, it remains unclear how much influence the group will actually have or why it was formed in the first place. Simon Machado, a researcher at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, said the whole thing seemed “shrouded in mystery” and he questioned how the nine members were selected. The group’s bare-bones website says it “came together after OpenAI approached some of its members about establishing an external advisory board,” but that, following discussions with the company, the mathematicians decided to launch an independent group instead and invite others to join. It’s not clear which members were initially approached by OpenAI or how the remaining members were selected.

In a blog post published Tuesday, advisory group member Martin Hairer elaborated on the group’s origins and the thinking behind it, responding to what he called a “torrent of misinformation” surrounding its formation. “It is obvious that AI has already had a profound impact on mathematical research and raises numerous questions of correct attribution of ideas, priority, human understanding of ideas, etc.,” he wrote, adding that there is no sense in the community “taking a hard ‘ostrich’ approach of simply ignoring the AI labs and refusing to talk to them on principle.”

While acknowledging that the group was formed in response to an approach from OpenAI, Hairer stressed that not all of its members had been contacted by the company and that the resulting organization is “genuinely independent of OpenAI and any other of the so-called ‘frontier’ AI labs.” Beyond “obvious confidentiality requirements,” he said members have not signed any restrictive agreements governing what they can say publicly, adding that they receive no financial compensation and are relying on the IAS for technical support.

“The other fundamental fact is that our overarching aim is to represent as well as we possibly can the interests of the mathematical community,” wrote Hairer, a professor of mathematics at Imperial College London and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). While noting that the group is hardly a representative sample of the community, he said he is “absolutely certain that all nine of us take this extremely seriously and are acting in good faith.”

However the members were selected, the group currently comprises an elite cadre of academic mathematicians. The small size raises further questions about whether the group has the breadth of expertise required to evaluate everything coming its way, given the highly specialized skills and knowledge required to operate at the frontiers of mathematics.

Francesco Fournier-Facio, an incoming mathematics professor at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, described himself as pretty “ambivalent” about the panel, saying that greater engagement with mathematicians “can only make things better.” But he questioned whether this group fully reflects the community whose work and livelihoods are being upended by OpenAI’s quest to rack up mathematical trophies. “It feels like an ivory tower,” he told The Verge.

Machado similarly questioned whether the group’s members fully understand, or can speak to, the concerns of the broader mathematical community when it comes to AI. “They’re amazing mathematicians, but I don’t know if they are the people I want to represent me in more political questions,” he said. For mathematicians in their and similarly elite positions, Machado said, “I think that the reality they are facing is very different from the reality that most mathematicians are facing right now.”

Whether the group can earn mathematicians’ trust will ultimately determine how effective it will be at containing the fallout from OpenAI’s recent parade of missteps in announcing results and, more importantly, soften the blow for whatever the company is planning to announce next. In his blog, Hairer said members would “be very naïve to believe that the AI labs won’t try to spin whatever we say in a way that suits their PR machine, which dwarfs anything we could possibly come up with.”

Nevertheless, Hairer argued it would be hypocritical not to engage now that OpenAI appears to be making an effort, particularly after so many criticized the company’s conduct and poor communications. The group has yet to settle on the advice it intends to provide, he said, but there is a clear problem it is responding to: “It is a fact that AI companies have in recent months been producing some high profile mathematical results and that their publication and dissemination has been falling far short of acceptable mathematical practice, whichever way that is defined.”

For now, Hairer said the group is gathering input through conversations with colleagues, a public feedback form, and discussion on Proofs and Prompts, a blog that has emerged as a key forum for mathematicians reckoning with AI’s impact on the field.

But the group’s biggest challenge likely lies ahead. When announcing the advisory group, OpenAI casually dropped the news that its new, unreleased model — the same that resolved the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem — has now “resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics.” It has previously said it is closing in on another Millennium Prize problem. On its website, the group said dealing with this logjam is its first priority: “We are currently facing the very specific challenge of advising OpenAI on how to coordinate the release of a large number of significant results in mathematics that they report have been produced by their internal model.”

In part, the new effort at engaging mathematicians is an acknowledgement of the monumental PR disaster its attempt was, in which the company found itself fending off accusations of scooping researchers, failing to credit the human work its models built upon, and even stealing from those using its models. Those controversies led many mathematicians to wonder if the company understood — or even respected — the discipline and community it had barreled into.

After the last few months and with so much having been written about what mathematicians want, Kevin Buzzard, a mathematics professor at Imperial College London, wondered why OpenAI felt like it needed such an elite body to understand what the community wants. “It wasn’t proofs of hard theorems, it was better understanding of our subject,” he said. “It’s not entirely clear to me that you need a committee of brilliant people to hammer the point home.”

British Columbia has initiated legal action against OpenAI, asserting that a tragic school shooting in the province could have been averted if the company had alerted local authorities about the shooter’s use of ChatGPT to strategize the assault.

The lawsuit, filed on Monday in a federal court in San Francisco, names OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, as the main defendants. It seeks compensation to support recovery initiatives in the province following the February incident, along with a directive for OpenAI to amend its management of ChatGPT interactions that could incite violence.

In the horrifying school shooting that took place in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, nine individuals were killed, with most of the victims being children. The perpetrator, Jesse Van Rootselaar, had been flagged by OpenAI’s safety team due to conversations revolving around gun violence but was not reported to law enforcement.

Niki Sharma, British Columbia’s attorney general, expressed the community's need for accountability: “The people of Tumbler Ridge have endured an unimaginable loss, and they deserve answers and accountability,” she stated regarding the lawsuit.

There is rising scrutiny on AI firms concerning the potential dangers posed by their products, including causing cyberattacks, spreading disinformation, and enabling violent behavior, not to mention the toll on mental health. OpenAI is also facing lawsuits from the families of victims of the Tumbler Ridge shooting, as well as from those affected by a mass shooting earlier at Florida State University.

In a letter released in April, Altman expressed his heartfelt regrets about OpenAI’s failure to notify law enforcement. He pledged to implement reforms but reportedly did not follow through, despite attempts from Sharma's office to engage with the company, according to the lawsuit.

Currently, the site of the shooting is being demolished, and the province is burdened with the expenses associated with constructing a new school, mental health services, and other repercussions stemming from the attack.

Maya Gebala, one of the survivors who was shot three times, including in the head, now lives with significant brain injuries and permanent disabilities. Her family has shared her recovery journey online, including moments like her recent 13th birthday celebration.

Drew Pusateri, a spokesperson for OpenAI, described the Tumbler Ridge shooting as an “unspeakable tragedy,” reaffirming the company’s commitment to collaborating with government and law enforcement while continuing its safety initiatives.

However, British Columbia contends that OpenAI has not adequately accepted responsibility or acted in response to the tragedy. Sharma emphasized the need for the company to enhance its safeguards and improve transparency about its products, stating, “To date, OpenAI has not taken meaningful steps to address the concerns raised by survivors, families and the Tumbler Ridge community.”

This lawsuit follows a wave of legal actions from over 30 family members and other individuals impacted by the shooting, who have accused OpenAI of neglecting an opportunity to prevent the incident.

On February 10, Van Rootselaar shot her mother and stepbrother at their residence before targeting an educational assistant and five students aged 12 and 13 at her former school. After committing these acts, the 18-year-old shooter took her own life.

British Columbia has sued OpenAI, saying a mass shooting at a school in the Canadian province could have been prevented if the company had warned local ⁠law enforcement that the shooter ⁠had used ChatGPT to ​plan the attack.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco federal court on Monday, names OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, as defendants. It is seeking damages to fund recovery efforts in the province after the February attack, as well as an order directing changes to the way the company handles ChatGPT conversations that could lead to violence.

Nine people, primarily children, were killed in the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The shooter, Jesse Van ⁠Rootselaar, had been flagged by the company’s safety team after her conversations about gun violence, but the company did not alert police.

“The people of Tumbler Ridge have endured an unimaginable loss, and they deserve answers and accountability,” said Niki Sharma, British Columbia’s attorney general, in a statement this week on the suit.

AI companies are facing increasing scrutiny over how their products may lead to a range of harms from cyberattacks and disinformation to facilitating violence and worsening mental health. OpenAI is also facing lawsuits from family members of victims in the British Columbia mass shooting, as well as the family of a victim in a Florida State University shooting from earlier this year.

Altman published a letter in April ​to the community in Tumbler Ridge saying he was “deeply sorry” OpenAI had not contacted ‌law enforcement. He promised reforms, but never ‌followed through, despite efforts from British Columbia’s attorney general to engage, the lawsuit says.

The school where the shooting took place is in the process of being ‌demolished, and the province has been forced to absorb the costs of a replacement school, mental health care and other effects of the shooting, according to the lawsuit.

One survivor, Maya Gebala, recovered from being shot three times, including in the skull. She suffered catastrophic brain injuries and permanent disabilities from the attack, according to court documents. Gebala’s family has documented her life since the shooting in online posts, including sharing images of her celebrating her 13th birthday this week.

A spokesperson for OpenAI, Drew Pusateri, called the Tumbler Ridge shooting an unspeakable tragedy. “OpenAI remains committed to working collaboratively with government and law enforcement officials, and continuing to advance our ongoing safety work.”

British Columbia alleges that OpenAI has failed to take proper accountability and action for the killing, however, with Sharma stating that the company must strengthen its safeguards and increase transparency on its products.

“To date, OpenAI has not taken meaningful steps to address the concerns raised by survivors, families and the Tumbler Ridge community,” the attorney general said.

The province’s lawsuit comes after more than 30 family members of victims and others affected by the attack filed lawsuits in California, accusing the company of opting out of a chance to prevent ‌the shooting.

Van Rootselaar shot her mother and stepbrother at home before killing an educational assistant and five students aged 12 and 13 at her former school on 10 February, according to police. Van Rootselaar, who was 18, then died by ​suicide.

The incident, one of the worst mass shootings in Canada’s history, devastated the small northern mining town and shocked the country. It also prompted Canadian officials to call in OpenAI executives for questioning, as well as resulted in a call between Canada’s AI minister, Evan Solomon, and Altman.

Van Rootselaar’s interactions with ChatGPT were first flagged by the company in June 2025. Safety team members recommended contacting police, but Altman and other OpenAI leadership overruled them, the lawsuit says, citing OpenAI whistleblowers who spoke to the Wall Street Journal in the wake of the shooting.

The shooter’s account was deactivated, but she was able to get a new account and continue using the platform to plan her attack.

After publication of the Wall Street Journal article, the company said the ⁠account was flagged by systems that identify “misuses of our models in furtherance of violent activities”, but the issues did ​not meet its internal criteria for reporting to law ​enforcement.

The lawsuit comes after a series of ​cases against OpenAI have been filed in US state and federal courts in recent months over claims ChatGPT facilitated violence, ​including lawsuits related to a mass ‌shooting at Florida State ​University last year.

In June, Florida became the ​first state to sue OpenAI over safety risks, accusing the company of misrepresenting the safety of its ChatGPT platform, which the lawsuit said had harmed children by providing information to school shooters, offering guidance on self-harm and addicting young users.

OpenAI, which has denied the claims, has said it trains its models to refuse requests that could “meaningfully enable violence”, and notifies law enforcement when conversations suggest “an imminent and credible risk of harm to others”.

These contractors play a crucial role in humanizing OpenAI’s models. However, as uncovered by 404 Media, some of these workers have been dismissed for employing AI to assist in their tasks. This situation is particularly ironic given that OpenAI advocates for the integration of AI into workplaces.

Some of the AI models are already showing early signs of “model collapse,” a phenomenon where models trained on outputs generated by other AIs experience reduced performance. Alarmingly, individuals tasked with mitigating this issue have resorted to AI-generated content to aid in training.

One contractor stated that the use of AI is prevalent among their peers and that being caught using it often leads to immediate termination. “In a group of thousands, many have faced consequences for this,” they explained.

In a recent report, 404 Media introduced Project Lily, where hundreds of contractors scrutinize real user prompts and interactions with ChatGPT, which may contain sensitive data. These individuals evaluate and critique ChatGPT's outputs to ensure that they strike the right tone and avoid excessive flattery or anthropomorphism. This reporting was based on internal documents and insights from a contractor.

Moreover, 404 Media has accessed additional internal documents and interviewed three contractors engaged in various OpenAI projects, with estimates suggesting over ten thousand contractors are involved overall.

According to one internal document, the use of AI is strictly prohibited for contractors. It states, “Do not utilize AI detection tools or any AI in your work.” In fact, they are specifically instructed not to employ tools like GPTZero, labeling them unreliable. They should focus on the broader patterns of work instead of individual clues indicating AI use.

All interviewed contractors confirmed that they have been explicitly told not to use AI in their evaluations. Two sources indicated that individuals had been let go for violating this rule. The anonymity of these contractors was preserved as they were not authorized to communicate with the media.

Contractors tasked with assessing the work of others are on high alert for indicators of AI assistance, such as repetitive phrasing, overly formal punctuation, and unusually swift task completion. Within internal Slack channels, it's common to see requests for advice on whether a particular output is AI-generated, with responses often confirming it is.

One contractor shared their experience of using AI during the training of OpenAI’s models, revealing their termination letter cited concerns about the “authenticity” of their contributions. They expressed remorse, stating, “I didn’t feel fulfilled or like I was positively contributing to society.”

Two contractors interviewed by 404 Media were associated with Mercor, a company responsible for hiring evaluators for ChatGPT-related content. A representative from Mercor disclosed, “Our specialists are selected for their judgment, which is vital for AI development. Our contracts explicitly forbid the use of language models for project tasks, and we rigorously enforce these standards. When we identify a contractor using AI, we remove them instantly.”

Additionally, a fourth contractor who has contributed to model training for various AI firms revealed they intentionally selected low-quality responses, aiming to hinder the training process. “Initially, I felt guilty about this work,” they admitted. “Now, I either disregard the outcomes altogether or deliberately pick the worst results. I doubt it makes a significant impact given the number of reviewers, but it feels like I’m being compensated to degrade the AI.”

OpenAI did not provide any comments regarding the firing of contractors for using AI.

OpenAI has an army of contractors who read real ChatGPT users’ prompts and other data to help improve the chatbot’s responses. The idea is that the contractors provide an, obviously, human touch to OpenAI’s models. Well, not all of the contractors are doing that. 404 Media has found multiple contractors hired to improve OpenAI’s models have been fired for using AI to train the AI. That’s not great for the models themselves, but there is also obviously a great irony in AI training companies working for OpenAI firing people for using AI when OpenAI’s whole thing is to make people use AI at work.

Some AI models already exhibit signs of “model collapse,” which is where AI models further trained on AI-generated text can become worse and worse. In this case, some of the people hired to partially stop that happening are themselves using AI-generated responses to train OpenAI’s models.

One contractor said they see people using AI “all the time and people are let go for it all the time, it’s pretty much the one thing that will get you kicked off ASAP.” The person said, “in a group of thousands there are tons that have been caught.”

Last week, 404 Media revealed Project Lily, in which OpenAI has hundreds of contractors reading real ChatGPT users’ prompts and conversations which can include personal information. Those contractors then rate and critique the responses ChatGPT generated, including making sure that the responses are not too sycophantic or anthropomorphize ChatGPT. That reporting was based on internal documents and conversations with a person who works on the prompts.

404 Media has now obtained other internal documents and spoken to three contractors doing work for OpenAI across various projects. Those projects can include more than ten thousand contractors, according to one of the internal documents.

One of those documents says contractors must not use AI themselves for their work.

“Do not use AI detection tools, or AI yourself,” one document describing the work of contractors who are hired to review the work of other contractors, including catching them for using AI, says. “Do not use GPTZero or any other AI detection tool. They are not reliable. Reviewers may not use AI either, including Grammarly and AI translation, to review, write feedback, or write comments.”

The document continues, “Do not tell evaluators why you suspect AI. It is easier for them to hide if they know what you look for. Judge the overall pattern, not one clue.”

All three of the contractors said reviewers are told not to use AI in their work. Two of the sources said people have been fired or offboarded for using AI. 404 Media granted the contractors anonymity as they weren’t permitted to speak to the press.

The contractors who review other contractors’ work are told to be on the look out for tell-tale signs of AI use. That can include repetitive words, AI-style punctuation — which might include over zealous use of the em dash — and contractors finishing their work very quickly.

In related Slack channels where people ask each other for advice, a lot of people will post an example with the question, ‘Is this AI?,’ one contractor said.

“Usually the answer is yes,” the person said.

One contractor said they used AI while helping to train OpenAI’s models and shared what they presented as their termination letter. It said their employer had identified issues with the “authenticity” of their work.

“I’m not a bad person or worker. I just needed a little boost and turned to AI to help me which eventually led to my downfall,” the contractor told 404 Media. “I felt no joy in the work or that I was contributing to society in any way.”

Two of the contractors 404 Media spoke to worked for Mercor, an AI-training company that hires the contractors who in turn review ChatGPT-related material. A Mercor spokesperson told 404 Media in a statement: “Our experts are hired for their expertise and judgement, which is essential to the ongoing advancement of AI. Our contracts strictly prohibit the use of LLMs to complete projects and we enforce that. We invest heavily in our tools and systems to detect misuse and ensure our experts comply with project rules and contract terms. When we confirm an expert has used AI to complete a task, we immediately remove them from the project.”

404 Media spoke to a fourth contractor who has worked on training models for various AI companies. They said they sometimes purposefully chose the worst responses because they wanted to actively sabotage the models’ training.

“I did feel guilty about doing this kind of work at the start,” they said. “I either pay zero attention to the results and choose randomly or purposely choose the [worst] output. I’m not sure how much of a difference it actually makes since there are hundreds of other people also rating prompt results, but it does feel like I’m getting paid to make AI worse.”

OpenAI declined to comment on its contractors being fired for using AI.

In a ⁠blog post published as world leaders gather at the United Nations, OpenAI said it was essential that a mechanism ​to facilitate complementary national and international frontier standards be developed, along with common measurements and incident reporting protocols for ​better collective action.

"Leading now will determine whether the United States shapes the global AI framework or watches a fragmented, uneven, and conflict-ridden system take hold around it. This will also determine whether advanced AI strengthens the networks that the United States and its allies already ​have; failing to lead may weaken them," OpenAI wrote in Monday's blog post.

Given worries about AI potentially harming ​humans in the future, the industry has been talking about intentionally slowing development, or "pacing".

The UN Security Council, which is charged with maintaining international peace and security, met for the first time on ​the risks of artificial intelligence in 2023, when China said the technology should not ​become a "runaway horse" ⁠and the United States warned against its use to censor or repress people.

US President Donald Trump's administration has rejected calls to slow down AI development, wary that any pause would only hand China room to close the gap in a ⁠technology it ​views as central to national and economic security.

Trump said earlier this ​month that the US already has guardrails in place to regulate AI development, adding that China would benefit from the doubt being cast on ​AI development. Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week in Washington.

To further complicate matters, a trio of mathematicians published a competing proof last Thursday, demonstrating that OpenAI's methodology cannot ultimately extend to offer a resolution for the unadulterated problem. Their findings indicate that the loophole identified by OpenAI effectively limits the applicability of the solution, suggesting that a breakthrough in understanding the equations would require entirely novel insights.

The Navier-Stokes equations aim to describe fluid dynamics, yet problems arise over their reliability. A key area of interest is whether these equations can exhibit extreme behaviors, or “blow-ups,” which would imply unrealistic scenarios where the flow becomes infinitely fast—an occurrence not supported by physical reality. The mathematical community recognizes a variable component in the equations: an external force, like gravity, which influences fluid behavior. “Considering the presence of an external force makes logical sense, as all fluids are subject to such influences,” explained mathematician Diego Córdoba.

However, many experts prefer to approach the Navier-Stokes problem without factoring in external forces. Their goal is to locate a fundamental means for the equations to exhibit blow-ups using only the natural characteristics of fluids. “Most researchers concentrate on scenarios devoid of any external influences,” remarked mathematician Luis Martínez-Zoroa.

In recent studies, Córdoba and Martínez-Zoroa employed this external force approach to show that it could trigger a blow-up phenomenon. Shortly after their work, two other mathematicians utilized this framework, augmented by AI, to simulate a blow-up in a hypothetical frictionless fluid. This result prompted a rapid follow-up from OpenAI within a day, stirring tensions between the researchers involved.

Despite OpenAI's claims, the new findings released last Thursday assert that removing the external force negates the blow-up, indicating that OpenAI's approach cannot be adapted to solve the fundamental Navier-Stokes problem without relying on artificial constructs. Silvestre emphasized that OpenAI's solution, while notable, diverges from the core inquiry of interest among mathematicians.

Ultimately, while OpenAI's work aligns with an earlier formulation from the Clay Institute, where external forces are permissible, it leads to new considerations about the nature of fluid dynamics. It raises questions about whether the Navier-Stokes equations can exhibit blow-ups solely with external forces, implying that such mathematical anomalies could arise from unrealistic fluid conditions rather than inherent properties.

As mathematicians ponder this potential outcome, opinions on OpenAI's contributions may shift significantly depending on future discoveries. “The implications of this situation could redefine expectations around the Clay problem,” cautioned Gonzalo Cao-Labora. 

On a broader scale, this scenario highlights the ongoing challenge posed by AI in mathematics. While language models excel in discovering existing phenomenon, proving impossibility remains an area where human mathematicians might retain an edge. “As we continue to observe advancements in AI, it could be both a challenge and an opportunity for our field,” Cao-Labora noted.

But with the dust still far from settled, a different controversy is emerging: Did OpenAI even solve the right Navier-Stokes problem?

Generated by an internal large language model (LLM), OpenAI’s proof relies on an approach that many experts find unnatural. It solves a variant of the problem that mathematicians say is disconnected from reality and thus less interesting. In a sense, the LLM found and exploited a loophole in the framing of the question.

“The most important problem is unsolved,” says Luis Silvestre, a mathematician at the University of Chicago. “The Clay problem is settled, but the main problem for the Navier-Stokes equations is not.”

Furthermore, last Thursday, three mathematicians posted a proof of their own that showed that OpenAI’s method can never be extended to solve the full problem. In other words, the loophole will never be closed, barring some completely new idea.

The Navier-Stokes equations are supposed to describe how fluids flow, but mathematicians doubt whether they can always be trusted. The million-dollar problem is about whether the equations ever “blow up,” which would mean they’d allow the flow to be infinitely fast at points—something that can’t happen in the real world.

But there’s one piece of the equations that’s optional—sometimes it’s there; sometimes it isn’t. The “it” here is an external force such as gravity that affects how a fluid moves. “All fluids we know of are under some kind of external force,” says mathematician Diego Córdoba. “So to have the force makes complete sense.”

When most experts think about the Navier-Stokes problem, though, it’s without this force. They want to find a purer, more fundamental way for the equations to blow up by using only the intrinsic forces within any fluid—not by applying some specific, precisely contrived external force. “Most of the other groups, it’s true, were specifically considering the scenario without a force,” says mathematician Luis Martínez-Zoroa.

In the past few years, though, Córdoba and Martínez-Zoroa put all their focus on this niche piece of the equations and laid out a method to build a very specific external force to trigger a blowup. On September 7 two other mathematicians used their program (and AI) to produce a blowup for a frictionless fluid—considered a major step toward blowing up Navier-Stokes. OpenAI finished the job less than a day later—timing that has led to a heated dispute between the latter two mathematicians and the company.

But the new work released last Thursday shows unequivocally that if the force is removed, the blowup will disappear. OpenAI’s method can never work, in fact, without using a very contrived equation for the force that is unlike anything that could occur in the real world. “They essentially prove that the formulation with an external force was different from the problem we really wanted to solve,” Silvestre says.

In other words, the LLM’s result does not—and will never—answer the Navier-Stokes problem that mathematicians really care about.

It did, however, unambiguously solve the problem according to the Clay Institute’s original formulation. The official problem statement, penned in 2000 by mathematician Charles Fefferman, offers an option called “C,” in which solutions are allowed to use an external force like OpenAI’s.

Now fluid dynamicists are grappling with a possibility few had considered before: the idea that the Navier-Stokes equations can blow up but only with an external force. In this scenario, you can mathematically place a fluid in a specific, unrealistic situation to break the equations, yet the blowup can never come from the fluid itself.

“It’s really uncertain at this moment,” says mathematician Gonzalo Cao-Labora. “Depending on the answer to this, I think the contribution of OpenAI will be regarded differently.” If it turns out to be true, he adds, “people would probably think about the Clay problem and say, ‘We shouldn’t have put the external force in the statement.’”

This might even be good news for “team humanity.” LLMs are great at finding blowups that exist—at searching the infinite landscape of fluid scenarios and plucking out the precise situation that breaks the equations. But proving that blow-up is impossible is a kind of math AI still struggles with. “We may be at less of a disadvantage, or maybe an advantage, compared to LLMs,” says Cao-Labora. “LLMs are especially good at constructing things that are very explicit and not as good—for now—in making new theory.”

But regardless of whether the path to solving the full Navier-Stokes problem requires a clever new blowup or a whole new mathematical discipline, everyone is becoming more hesitant to bet against the machines.

“We are really amazed with how [the technology] has evolved in the last year—so we don't know how it will look in one year,” says Cao-Labora. “It’s really a wake-up call to the community.”

Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?

SoftBank Group has initiated a substantial bond sale totaling approximately $11 billion, which includes $10 billion in senior unsecured dollar notes and €1 billion in euro-denominated notes, as outlined in term sheets disclosed by Reuters and Bloomberg on Monday.

This transaction is structured across five tranches, with dollar notes maturing in three and a half, five and a half, and seven and a half years, and euro notes maturing in four and six years.

The pricing for this bond sale is scheduled for 24 September, with settlement expected on 29 September. Details regarding the coupon rates remain undisclosed, and there hasn't been any final guidance provided yet. Citigroup and JPMorgan are spearheading the sale efforts.

The purpose of this fundraising effort relates primarily to SoftBank’s previous commitments, rather than external documentation. In a statement from 27 February, the company pledged $30 billion to OpenAI through Vision Fund 2 at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion, with payments slated for 1 April, 1 July, and 1 October in equal installments.

SoftBank indicated that this investment would initially rely on bridge loans, transitioning to financing through existing assets and other means. This newly issued bond will serve as that replacement, according to the company's own framework.

As of 9 September, SoftBank reported that it had prepaid $25.9 billion of the $30 billion drawn from a previously arranged $40 billion facility, leaving around $4.1 billion outstanding. This refinancing aspect is what makes the recent $11 billion bond issuance appear less like an expansion of debt and more like a strategic financial manoeuvre.

The pricing of the new bonds will be a critical point of interest. For reference, the company’s April notes were issued at rates of 7.625% for three and a half years and 8.250% for five and a half years, while its 2031 dollar bonds were yielding about 8.2% in September, a significant increase from 6.7% in January. Both S&P and Fitch currently assign a BB+ rating to the group, which is the highest level within the speculative grade category.

There is a notable disparity between this pricing and the domestic market. SoftBank’s record retail bond in Japan, which was priced on 4 September, had a yield of 4.75%, approximately 350 basis points lower than what offshore institutional investors seek for similar credit risks.

SoftBank's balance sheet continues to grow steadily. On 18 September, the company expanded a credit facility to $6.5 billion, divested its entire $5.8 billion investment in Nvidia, and approximately $9.2 billion worth of T-Mobile shares. The company has also put Arm up as collateral for a $25 billion margin loan.

It’s important to note that Arm itself has not been sold, a detail that can often be overlooked. According to its calculations, SoftBank reports a loan-to-value ratio of 13% as of 30 June; S&P estimates this figure at 33%.

To date, SoftBank's cumulative investment in OpenAI amounts to $64.6 billion for a 13% stake, acquired at a $730 billion pre-money valuation. OpenAI is currently in discussions for a private fundraising round that is expected to result in a significantly higher valuation, with final terms anticipated on 24 September.

SoftBank Group has launched a bond sale of roughly $11bn, comprising $10bn in senior unsecured dollar notes and an additional €1bn in euros, according to term sheets reported separately by Reuters and Bloomberg on Monday.

A recent legal action has been initiated against Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google, asserting that these prominent AI firms engaged in an unlawful agreement to restrain their AI development efforts.

Filed on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the lawsuit claims these leading companies violated antitrust laws by agreeing to cooperate in slowing down AI advancements, ultimately diminishing the benefits consumers receive from paid AI subscriptions.

The coordination allegedly occurred on September 12, when Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, published a piece advocating for an industry-wide approach to delay progress in favor of improved safety protocols. On the same day, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceXAI; and Demis Hassabis, co-founder and chair of Google DeepMind, all publicly expressed their agreement with Amodei’s proposals.

The plaintiffs argue that an understanding among these key competitors to slow down their progress collectively has an anti-competitive impact on consumers. The lawsuit represents four plaintiffs, who are subscribers to AI products such as ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or Gemini, and seeks to extend the claim to a nationwide class of paid subscribers to these services.

Lead attorney Nick Rowley stated, “AI could spiral out of human control and pose a grave threat if we let private agreements among powerful tech companies dictate safety and protocol.” 

As of Saturday, representatives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and SpaceXAI had not yet responded to requests for comment.

In the initial essay advocating for a slowdown, Amodei recognized potential antitrust implications, suggesting that U.S. government involvement could help facilitate discussions among different labs. He mentioned that while the government does not need to take part directly, it could provide a narrow waiver for specific safety-related conversations.

Altman responded on social media, saying that OpenAI supports a federal framework for consistent safety requirements, but asserted that they do not believe it is necessary to await an antitrust exemption or legislation before beginning their safety efforts.

Discussions regarding the pace of AI development have intensified amid rising concerns about the technology evading human oversight. Various industry leaders have long advocated for the creation of shared safety standards and collaboration to ensure safety remains a top priority.

The plaintiffs clarified that they are not opposed to the AI companies requesting Congress, the White House, or other agencies to establish regulation, nor are they against seeking an antitrust exemption. However, they recognize that achieving collaborative efforts with the federal government might prove challenging.

Former President Donald Trump has publicly dismissed calls for regulation via social media, characterizing them as part of a conspiracy, and questioned the rationale behind industry leaders advocating for regulations that might, in his view, lead to their demise.

On social media, Trump also announced plans to form an AI task force and appoint an “AI czar,” but details were scant. The Trump administration has emphasized the importance of American AI labs outperforming their Chinese counterparts, while many Democratic leaders and candidates have been advocating for comprehensive AI regulations. Conversely, Republican opinions tend to align with Trump’s stance. U.S. Senator Josh Hawley recently remarked during a Senate hearing that he sees no scenario in which he would agree to grant antitrust exemptions to “the most powerful companies in the history of the world,” cautioning that such collaboration could suppress competition.

The coordination largely took place on September 12, the lawsuit argues, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging for industrywide cooperation on decelerating advancements in favour of enhanced safety measures.

That same day, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk and Google DeepMind's co-founder and chair Demis Hassabis each publicly responded to Amodei's proposals in agreement.

It's clear that an agreement among the chief rivals in AI that their progress “should be slower than competition would otherwise produce has an anti-competitive effect on consumers,” the plaintiffs argue.

Lawyers representing four named plaintiffs, who pay for subscriptions to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok or Gemini, are bringing the suit on behalf of a proposed nationwide class of other paid subscribers to those services.

“AI will quickly spin out of human control and could kill us all if we allow AI safety and protocol ... to be controlled by private self-serving agreements between the world's most powerful for profit' technology companies,” said Nick Rowley, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs.

Representatives for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and SpaceXAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.

In his initial essay proposing the slowdown, Amodei acknowledged potential antitrust challenges, writing that it would be helpful for the U.S. government to mediate “or at least enable” these cross-lab discussions.

The government wouldn't need to participate, he wrote, but would need to “issue a narrow waiver for certain kinds of safety conversations”.

In response, Altman said on social media that OpenAI welcomes the idea of a “federal framework that sets consistent safety requirements,” but said “we do not believe we need to wait for an anti-trust exemption or legislation to begin the work of providing this confidence”.

While the recent conversations about pacing development were spurred by increasing concerns about AI evading human control, several leaders in the AI space have long talked about developing a shared set of standards or otherwise coordinating to ensure safety efforts remain paramount.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit contend they are not against the AI companies asking Congress, the White House or any other agency to develop AI regulation, nor are they against the companies asking for an antitrust exemption.

But achieving that kind of collaboration with the federal government could be an uphill battle.

U.S. President Donald Trump rejected the calls for regulation on social media. He has claimed that any efforts to limit the technology are part of a “conspiracy".

He called into question why the industry leaders would be calling for regulation that, he says, “if strongly implemented, will drive them into oblivion and bankruptcy”.

Trump said Saturday on social media that he is forming an AI task force and will appoint an “AI czar,” but provided scant detail.

The Trump administration has been vocal about wanting American AI labs to outpace and excel past Chinese competition. While several Democratic leaders and candidates have called for sweeping action on AI regulation, Republicans have largely mirrored Trump's position.
