Meta has revealed plans to significantly enhance its already ambitious data center initiative in Richland Parish, Louisiana. This expansion will boost the facility's compute capacity to an impressive 5 gigawatts, positioning it among the largest data centers ever constructed. The announcement was made on Monday.
With this development, Meta's total investment in the area has surpassed $50 billion, solidifying its status as one of the most substantial investments in AI infrastructure on a global scale.
Once the facility is up and running, it is anticipated to create over 1,000 job opportunities. Since commencing construction in December 2024, Meta has awarded Louisiana companies more than $1.6 billion in contracts.
In addition to the massive investment in the data center, Meta plans to allocate over $1 billion for enhancements to local infrastructure, including improvements to roads and water and wastewater systems.
The tech powerhouse has also reached an energy partnership that is projected to save Entergy Louisiana customers over $2 billion over the next two decades. The company has committed to financing the facility's energy, water, and infrastructure expenses.
The ongoing project is already making a significant impact on Richland Parish, a rural area with a population of around 20,000. Educators in the parish recently received annual bonuses that significantly rose from $10,000 to over $50,000, a change attributed to increased tax revenues linked to the data center.
"This is a life-changing development for our teachers and their families, and it’s reshaping our educational system," stated Sheldon Jones, Superintendent of the Richland Parish School District. He noted that Meta's investment has also drawn stronger candidates for teaching positions.
Additionally, Meta is committing $5 million to Louisiana Delta Community College to establish scholarships for local residents pursuing training for positions related to the data center. Starting with the graduating class of 2026, all students from Richland Parish high schools will be eligible for full scholarships in data center-related vocational programs.
This scholarship initiative follows Meta's announcement in June about the launch of America’s Workforce Academy, a skilled trades training program that provides free tuition and guaranteed employment for graduates.
