SpaceX has achieved a monumental milestone by completing the largest IPO in history, amassing $75 billion and reaching a staggering valuation of $1.77 trillion. Following this groundbreaking event, both OpenAI and Anthropic are poised to make their own entries into the public market. These three colossal IPOs are expected to create a wave of new millionaires and potentially billionaires.

As they embark on this journey of newfound wealth, many will face the challenge of managing and allocating their resources wisely. Melinda French Gates, one of the world’s most prominent philanthropists, offers some valuable guidance for this emerging class of investors.

"Make a commitment to donate at least half of your wealth," French Gates advised in a recent interview with Fortune, especially directed toward this new wave of wealth creators. "No matter the size of your fortune, whether large or small, if you have the means to invest in these IPOs, you also have the capacity to give away half."

In 2010, she co-founded the Giving Pledge, an initiative encouraging the ultra-wealthy to promise to donate a significant portion of their wealth during their lifetimes or through their wills. French Gates has openly committed to distributing the majority of her fortune while alive, primarily through the Gates Foundation—a venture she started with her former husband, Bill Gates. The foundation has tackled various global health issues over the years. Currently, she operates her own company, Pivotal, through which she supports causes related to women’s health, political empowerment, caregiving, and more. Recently, she announced a remarkable $215 million investment in women’s health initiatives, focusing on midlife issues and menopause. As per Bloomberg, French Gates's net worth stands at approximately $19 billion, ranking her at No. 137 on their billionaires list.

The Giving Pledge has gained traction, with over 250 billionaires signing on, among them co-founder Warren Buffett, Canva's Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht, MacKenzie Scott, Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky, and Spanx's Sara Blakely. French Gates particularly admires philanthropists such as Scott, who has made headlines for her substantial donations to historically Black colleges and universities, and Alice Walton from the Walmart family, who is involved in establishing innovative medical education initiatives.

French Gates emphasizes that any billionaire in the United States has benefited from the resources and opportunities available in the country, whether as a native or an immigrant. Infrastructure like roads, educational access, and healthcare have facilitated the growth of successful businesses in America.

For billionaires, regardless of their tenure in wealth, she counsels, "I've never thought it’s appropriate for billionaires to flaunt their riches, a tendency we've observed at various wealth levels." She remarked on the nature of ostentatious displays of wealth, stating, "This behavior provides no benefit to anyone. While it’s fine to indulge in meaningful purchases, there's no need for extravagance."
