The San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust, a nonprofit organization focused on the permanent preservation of forest land within San Bernardino National Forest, faced a daunting challenge in its campaign to raise funds for acquiring land along Big Bear Lake’s north shore in Fawnskin. The aim was to thwart a proposed residential development project named Moon Camp. Just when the future of the plan seemed uncertain, a tech billionaire came forward to provide vital support.
The land trust had reached a tentative $10 million agreement with RCK Properties, based in Chicago, for the purchase of this land. The site for the proposed development, which would include the construction of 50 homes, is located about a mile from the nesting site of Big Bear’s famed bald eagle couple, Jackie and Shadow. These majestic eagles are visible via a 24/7 live camera operated by the Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit dedicated to local wildlife conservation. Fundraising efforts commenced on February 19, with a deadline for securing the necessary funds set for July 31.
By July 23, the land trust had managed to raise nearly half of the requisite sum, totaling approximately $4.9 million. With the deadline rapidly approaching, prospects for raising the remainder were looking slim.
However, a significant turn of events occurred on July 24, just one week before the deadline, when a generous donation of $5.5 million was announced, effectively securing the financial means to prevent the housing development from proceeding, as stated in a press release from Friends of Big Bear Valley.
OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman, along with his wife Anna, were the ones to provide this substantial contribution, aiding the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust's mission to protect the crucial forest habitat in the region. Anna expressed their gratitude, noting the couple's appreciation for the eagles and their inspiring partnership as they raise their young together.
Jenny Voisard, media manager at Friends of Big Bear Valley, highlighted the excitement surrounding the Brockmans' commitment, mentioning that the team had kept the donation under wraps until arrangements were finalized. Voisard also conveyed the relief of having positive news for the community amid ongoing concerns for Jackie, who was recently treated for injuries after a confrontation with younger eagles.
Jackie has been recovering at the Ojai Raptor Center, where she received a critical blood transfusion. Although her condition remains serious, the community is hopeful for her recovery. With the new funds in place, the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust is set to finalize the land acquisition by July 31, with plans to manage the area in perpetuity. Any remaining donations will assist with property taxes, legal fees, and upkeep of the land.
Reflecting on the passing of former FBBV Executive Director Sandy Steers, who had initially facilitated the deal with RCK Properties, Voisard expressed both sadness and relief, believing that this outcome honors Steers' legacy and ambition for the land’s protection.
As the situation develops, Jackie serves as a poignant reminder of the mission that drove these fundraising efforts. Voisard concluded with optimism, indicating that the land is now poised for a bright future under conservation, with a dedicated home secured for Jackie and Shadow’s habitat.
