Elon Musk's ongoing criticism of Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey has intensified. The billionaire and founder of Tesla announced on his social media platform, X, that his AI project, Grok Imagine, is set to produce a "full-length" version of the ancient Greek epic penned by Homer.
In a post, Musk stated, “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” while sharing an AI-generated short film of the narrative created by an X user.
Though The Odyssey originates from fiction, the claim of creating a "historically accurate" remake raises eyebrows. Musk has been vocal in his disapproval of Nolan's casting choices over the past few months. He specifically criticized Lupita Nyong'o's role as Helen of Troy and has echoed transphobic sentiments related to Elliot Page, who was initially speculated to portray Achilles but was later cast as Sinon.
Additionally, Musk expressed his willingness to fund Mel Gibson with $100 million for an adaptation of The Odyssey that would be delivered in Homeric Greek, responding positively to an X user's suggestion.
Despite Musk's criticisms, Nolan's adaptation has proven to be a commercial success, raking in an impressive $263.7 million worldwide. Projections indicate that it could reach an additional $20 million in a Tuesday earnings forecast, potentially setting it up to be Nolan's highest-grossing film to date.
The star-studded cast includes actors such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Nyong'o, Page, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, and John Leguizamo. The Universal film brings to life the epic narrative of Homer's poem, believed to have been composed around the 7th or 8th Century BC.
