At the University of Central Florida, real estate executive Gloria Caulfield faced backlash when she described AI as an exciting “next industrial revolution” for graduates. Similarly, Chris Duffey from Adobe was met with disdain during his AI-themed address at Marquette University. Music industry figure Scott Borchetta experienced mockery for his optimistic remarks about AI’s influence on music at Middle Tennessee State University.
Even prominent figures like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt encountered jeers when he urged graduates at the University of Arizona to contribute to shaping the future of AI. Current Google CEO Sundar Pichai, speaking at Stanford University's graduation, chose to largely sidestep the topic, acknowledging he had received plenty of advice on what to avoid mentioning.
This trepidation is understandable, particularly considering that the class of 2026 belongs to a generation grappling with significant underemployment and job insecurity linked to AI advancements. Surveys show that nearly half of Generation Z perceives the risks posed by AI to outweigh its benefits, with about sixty percent expressing anxiety over its implications.
Traditionally, Silicon Valley executives have been celebrated at graduation ceremonies, representing a burgeoning sector that lured many young graduates. Steve Jobs’ legendary address at Stanford in 2005, with the memorable phrase “Stay hungry. Stay foolish,” encapsulated the aspirational ethos of that time, as he embodied the potential for success within the tech elite.
In contrast, the negative reception of AI-endorsing speakers reveals a generational shift; many students now identify these figures as symbols of a disconnected elite. Zeynep Maya Dogancioglu, a student at the University of Tampa and leader of Pause AI US, believes students are justified in expressing their discontent. She argues that while students are prevented from using AI in their academic work, their instructors implement the same tools without hesitation, exposing a glaring inconsistency.
Critiques from students are not limited to single institutions. A University of Arizona student expressed concerns that Schmidt's speech catered to millionaire agendas rather than the needs of the students. Meanwhile, calls for more relevant speakers, such as Zohran Mamdani at Duke University, reflect a desire for discussions that resonate with students’ realities. Others, like Nickolas Spiliotopoulos from the University of California, Santa Barbara, emphasize a collective wish to safeguard their academic and cognitive integrity from AI encroachment.
To many graduates, speakers promoting AI serve as representatives of a self-serving elite, characterized by insensitivity to the values and needs of the next generation.
This discontent harkens back to the work of sociologist C. Wright Mills, who outlined the dynamics of the American power elite in his seminal book, "The Power Elite." Mills’ analysis portrays a ruling class comprised of corporate leaders, military officials, and politicians, often gaining influence through connections rather than merit. Historically, trust was more prevalent in these groups, as they were perceived to be managing societal developments for the greater good.
In contemporary discourse, however, the narrative has shifted. Sociologist Heather Gautney, in her work "The New Power Elite," argues that today’s elite are increasingly disconnected and prone to self-interest, lacking empathy for those whose futures they ostensibly influence. This new breed of leaders often indulges in corporate authoritarianism, with a focus on dismantling the bureaucratic structures that once provided stability.
The current elite, exemplified by figures like Elon Musk, challenge conventional notions of responsibility and progress, favoring disruptive innovations over continuity. Their embrace of AI raises questions about the future of traditional education and the potential commodification of knowledge.
While these power dynamics evolve, students’ opposition to AI indicates a critical awareness of their circumstances. This sociological insight encourages a reevaluation of the prevailing technological narratives and urges younger generations to demand engagement and relevance in discourses that affect their lives.
As influential figures like Pichai begin to retreat from overt AI promotion, the resistance from students serves as a powerful counter-narrative. Even unexpected allies, such as fashion designer Jeremy Scott, are advocating for the appreciation of human intelligence over machine learning, highlighting a growing sentiment among the youth to reclaim their agency and define their futures on their terms.
