As the integration of artificial intelligence accelerates across various sectors, some college students are increasingly voicing their concerns in a confrontational manner.
During commencement ceremonies this month, graduates at multiple institutions expressed their discontent by booing speakers who praised AI technology. Vice President JD Vance addressed this trend in a recent speech at the U.S. Air Force Academy, noting a rise in negative sentiments towards AI.
At least five universities have witnessed the formation of anti-AI groups, where students convene to advocate for a pause in the rapid advancement of AI technology. This backlash highlights the growing chasm between the optimistic views held by business leaders about AI and the fears students have regarding its implications for employment, creativity, and critical thinking.
Paul Webster, a sophomore in computer science at UC Berkeley, shared his perspective: “Part of learning involves grappling with complex material, and when AI is used to simplify that process, it significantly diminishes genuine understanding.” NBC News interviewed several students across various campuses who indicated that they see their peers utilizing AI as a shortcut for academic tasks, often encouraged by instructors.
A survey conducted by Gallup and the Lumina Foundation in October revealed that 57% of U.S. college students harness AI for their coursework weekly, with 21% engaging with it daily. The primary reasons for this usage included enhancing comprehension of their studies and verifying homework answers.
In response to the rapid rise of AI, some students have established organizations on campus to counter its expansion. PauseAI US, which seeks to halt the development of advanced AI systems until they can be implemented safely, boasts chapters in five different universities.
Holly Elmore, the executive director of the organization, noted that students are increasingly perceiving the current trajectory of AI development as potentially harmful and too hasty. According to her, chapter leaders feel pressured by educational institutions to forsake ethical considerations in favor of expediency in their academic work.
Elmore reflected on students' growing sense of chaos regarding their futures: “They feel their lives are being thrown into disorder and often seek meaning, only to find that even this is being threatened by AI.”
The chapters set their own objectives, whether it be raising awareness about AI-related risks or advocating for legislative measures to oversee major AI companies.
Nickolas Spiliotopoulos, a senior studying political science at UC Santa Barbara and leader of his campus PauseAI chapter, emphasized the importance of open dialogue concerning AI's consequences. He mentioned that many members do not want AI replacing their academic or cognitive processes. “We aim for regulation that benefits everyone and preserves our critical thinking skills,” he commented, noting a consistent group of around a dozen active participants.
In addition to groups opposing AI development, numerous other campus organizations are emerging to facilitate discussions on AI safety and research, with representation spanning from Georgetown University to the University of Washington.
Meanwhile, significant AI firms have begun establishing a presence on campuses. For instance, Anthropic sponsors student groups focused on its AI product, Claude, and aims to connect with students who view AI as a means to enhance human potential rather than replace it.
Concerns about AI’s diminishing influence on personal hobbies, coupled with its perceived impact on employment, have also been brought to light by students. Many have acknowledged feeling compelled to embrace the technology despite their reservations.
"As if we’re being forced into it, we feel a weight around our necks,” remarked Kimberly Aron, a 37-year-old master’s student at Eastern University in Pennsylvania. She expressed concern that students need to grasp AI's complexities to avoid being left behind.
Zoe Kaufman, a recent psychology graduate from Mary Baldwin University, shared a similar sentiment: “There’s a palpable sense of AI being imposed on us. Schools encourage us to adopt various AI tools, and it feels like they’re encroaching upon our future job opportunities.”
Kaufman recounted an unsettling experience with her university's career center, where she was advised to let ChatGPT draft her résumé. “The idea of using a robot to create your application felt twisted,” she noted.
Aron has also voiced frustrations over the conflicting messages from educational institutions that both restrict AI usage and pressure students to become proficient in it. As a data analysis student, she worries that her skills in tools like Excel and SQL may soon be outdated.
Daniel Liddle, an associate professor of English at Western Kentucky University, has noticed a growing fatigue among students regarding discussions on AI. He remarked, “Many students appear exhausted by the ongoing conversation about AI and long for the academic focus they initially sought.”
There are varied perspectives on AI, with some viewing it as a universal solution while others adopt a more critical stance. Jeffrey Kang, a fresh graduate now working as a software engineer at Meta, acknowledged the desire for AI to fail but also pointed out the valuable applications it offers.
“What I observe is a prevailing expectation that AI can’t be overlooked,” he commented. “At major tech firms like Meta, it’s clear that AI tools are deemed beneficial.”
Spiliotopoulos highlighted that even skeptics of AI often recognize its societal potential. "There's a growing consensus that AI's rapid, unregulated development raises concerns, and people want to be engaged in that conversation,” he stated. “The reality isn't simply black and white; it’s much more nuanced.”
