Bernie Sanders has recently begun addressing issues surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), yet many on the left seem to be skeptical of its critics, lack in-depth knowledge about its functionalities, and overall, show a disinterest in the subject. AI is present in our lives; it’s discussed frequently, we recognize its significance, and we express concerns about its impact on employment. The question arises: should we focus on halting AI development altogether?

Imagine a thought experiment. You’re in a room with a toggle switch before you, featuring three settings. The first allows AI to evolve as it has been. The second suspends AI development pending the establishment of a regulatory framework deemed acceptable by a trustworthy independent entity. The third option completely ceases AI advancement indefinitely. What would your choice be? Would you allow AI to progress unchecked? Would you prefer to pause it for regulation? Or would you opt for a total shutdown of AI efforts? What is your stance on AI?

Artificial Intelligence encompasses technologies enabling machines to learn, solve problems, and produce human-like outputs for specific tasks traditionally performed by humans. Recently, a category of AI known as Large Language Models (LLMs) has branched into increasingly diverse applications. Critics have touted the imminent emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a form of AI that would equal or surpass human cognitive ability across various domains. Even more ambitious is the notion of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), which promises to outperform human capabilities across all fronts.

Elon Musk, a significant figure in tech innovation, has expressed amazement at the rapid pace of advancements in AI, remarking that by nightfall, he can barely keep up with the innovations that emerge daily. As reports flood in from various industry leaders, one wonders about the implications of these developments and how they pertain to leftist ideals focused on creating a just society.

I remarked previously on AI’s current capabilities—machines now create art, compose music, diagnose illnesses, and draft legal documents. They can write manuals, news articles, and even novels. Importantly, these systems excel at a wide variety of examinations; in fact, they could likely pass bar exams in many jurisdictions. Machines are also poised to take on roles in mental health care, elder assistance, and personal companionship. They analyze data, devise products, and tackle complex issues like protein folding. Presently, you can input a lengthy text into an AI and receive an outline or critique almost instantaneously. What will be possible next month? Perhaps giving the AI a massive textual input and receiving a precise translation in just moments? The future seems boundless.

Some may dismiss my observations as hyperbolic or overly optimistic. Yet, the rapidity of AI innovation is indeed striking, and while current outputs may have deficiencies, failing to recognize the pace of change misrepresents the evolution of technology. Critics who focus solely on shortcomings fail to see that today’s AI is a vast improvement over its predecessors and likely to be significantly enhanced in the near future.

If one were to question this perception, it’s worth examining shifts in the philosophies of companies developing AI technology. Historically, firms like Google and OpenAI pursued immediate commercial gains with new advancements. Their goal was to attract consumers and investors with the latest AI capabilities to maintain a competitive advantage. Yet, early hesitations about granting AI too much autonomy persisted, as executives were wary of allowing their systems to self-upgrade or operate independently.

However, as time evolved, the industry’s mindset changed. The driving motivations of these companies seem to have transitioned towards automating their internal functions first, followed by developing AIs capable of self-improvement before maximizing profits. This shift indicates that the pressures to achieve AGI and ASI have overtaken previous objectives of immediate profitability.

Leaders in AI have observed the competitive international landscape, primarily driven by developments in the U.S. and China. Many believe that AGI will be achieved soon, with ASI following closely behind. The CEOs seem to have determined that the first company to reach ASI will dominate the field and exert significant power globally. They seem to think that if they reach this milestone first, they will wield influence over not just the AI landscape but also broader sociopolitical realms. Ambition engenders a belief that the victor in this race will act benevolently while assuming the mantle of responsibility.

This mindset raises critical questions about the future trajectories of AI development. There are concerns that, whether due to technical, financial, or ethical challenges, the field could experience a setback. However, many industry leaders are fervently betting that achieving ASI will lead to solutions for obstacles encountered along the way. They may overlook the potential negative impacts of AI on society, driven by the belief that positive uses of AI will outweigh the concerns.

Right now, individuals can interact with AI to generate content on a variety of subjects in a personalized manner. Advanced platforms can help plan extensive projects, break them down into manageable segments, and even adapt plans when challenges arise. Just a few years ago, such capabilities seemed far off.

In stark contrast, some critics assert that AI technologies are overhyped, prone to failure, or financially burdensome. They caution that the bubble surrounding AI is about to burst, potentially harming economies. Yet, these critiques often overlook the staggering improvements AI has made in recent years.

AI does indeed make errors, but so do humans. The emphasis should be on its growth potential rather than its present flaws. Current advancements should be analyzed with a forward-looking perspective, considering how evolving capabilities will adapt over time. Future developments may involve AIs collaborating and refining their outputs based on each other's suggestions, potentially surpassing human capacities in certain fields.

The trajectory of AI promises remarkable advancements, while its incorporation into professional and academic arenas is increasingly evident. Experts have already begun to recognize the significant role AI could play in fields such as mathematics, potentially transforming the landscape of intellectual inquiry. Renowned mathematicians express concerns that breakthroughs in AI could render traditional educational paths obsolete.

With calls for proactive engagement and regulation growing louder, it’s essential for society to consider the broader implications of AI. Progressives must examine who controls AI technologies and ensure equitable access and responsible usage. This dialogue is crucial as we navigate an era marked by rapid technological evolution.

The unpredictable nature of AI’s development urges us to consider its impact on society carefully. Will the consequences of AI be predominantly beneficial or harmful? As the discourse around these technologies continues, the importance of establishing safeguards cannot be understated. It may be wise to favor caution over unchecked advancement, to allow for a comprehensive examination of the ramifications of AI proliferation.
