On Friday, Wake Forest University will host its annual sustainability conference, a gathering of leading figures from the realms of science, business, education, and government, all aiming to address pressing environmental challenges.

This year's event, organized by the Sabin Center for Environment and Sustainability, will revolve around the theme "Sustainable, Just and Abundantly Wild — Resilient Leadership for Our Era."

The agenda includes engaging sessions focused on groundbreaking research, such as how university scientists are leveraging artificial intelligence to tackle illegal gold mining in the Amazon rainforest. There will also be discussions on the influence of media and marketing strategies in fostering a more eco-friendly world.

Keynote speaker Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet, is set to inspire attendees with her insights.

Alan Townsend, the newly appointed executive director of the Sabin Center for Environment and Sustainability, expressed his aspirations for the event. "I hope attendees not only glean valuable insights but also feel empowered to contribute to this vital work," he remarked. He emphasized the importance of addressing the pressures on our planet's life support systems, stressing our responsibility to future generations. "Sustainability boils down to making wise choices in each generation to ensure the planet remains in good condition," he added.

Scheduled to take place in the Sutton Center, the conference will run from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is open to the public, though prior registration is required.
