Just over a month after the Department of Defense (DOD) announced that nearly 50% of its 3.5 million staff were integrating artificial intelligence into their daily tasks, an email circulated among the members of the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) regarding the rapid consumption of their AI tokens, prompting a need for restrictions on usage.
The email highlighted that, despite the Army Chief Information Officer (CIO) declaring unlimited token availability in May 2026, the token pool was entirely depleted by mid-June, necessitating the reinstatement of usage limits. As stated in the communication, the Army has opted to maintain its current token usage levels, but there is uncertainty about whether the Army CIO's token pool will be replenished after October 1.
The Army utilizes a multimodal generative AI tool called Ask Sage, enabling users to employ various large language models (LLMs) such as Alphabet’s Gemini, Meta’s Llama, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. An anonymous Army employee, who spoke to WIRED, noted that the entire Army had exhausted a year’s worth of tokens for just one service.
Ask Sage is instrumental in the Army’s enterprise LLM workspace and is officially recognized for handling Controlled Unclassified Information. It is also utilized by the DOD’s Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) for acquisition processes. According to the Army’s official materials, Ask Sage has facilitated tasks such as reclassifying personnel descriptions by defining and aligning roles, experiences, and qualifications.
Additionally, the Army is actively encouraging its personnel to adopt generative AI more broadly. Employees were reportedly assigned a minimum of 200,000 tokens each month, as indicated by emails obtained by WIRED, and additional tokens were automatically allocated upon depletion of their initial amounts. Moreover, individuals who registered for Ask Sage but had not been frequent users received reminders urging them to take better advantage of their token allocation.
