Trump initiated this flurry with an AI image that portrayed CNN's Kaitlan Collins as Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender actress who has faced backlash from some of his supporters for her association with Bud Light. This was just the start, as he quickly followed up with numerous additional AI creations, including a cartoon satirizing Bruce Springsteen and Chris Christie, a fictitious museum display featuring a statue of himself tossing a “Trump 2028” hat, as well as playful jabs at late-night hosts like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jimmy Fallon, alongside Rosie O'Donnell.

Despite the established two-term limit outlined in the U.S. Constitution, Trump seems to be reigniting his ambitions for a third term. Reports suggest that Trump’s associates have noted he has been acting even more “erratic” than usual as he tries to navigate a way out of the ongoing conflict in Iran, which he initiated five months ago. The situation has escalated, with military fatalities rising to 18 and costs spiking since diplomatic efforts with Tehran faltered earlier this month.

The 80-year-old president began his spree shortly after 11 a.m., when he posted an AI image depicting CNN star Kaitlan Collins as Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender actress despised by MAGA devotees for appearing in Bud Light advertisements.

The three companies announced in a joint statement issued over the weekend at an AI conference in San Francisco that they plan to build gigawatt-scale, multi-tenant AI cloud infrastructure to support the next generation of AI companies in South Korea and the U.S.

Payton Tolle was taken aback when his wife, Devin, shared a text from a friend about the trade of Connelly Early, his closest teammate, to the Washington Nationals late Saturday night. At first, Tolle thought it might be a prank associated with artificial intelligence. “I was like, ‘Call her, because we got to tell her that it’s AI,’” he said, laughing at the absurdity of the situation. It took seeing the report from esteemed ESPN insider Jeff Passan for him to accept the reality: for the first time since their days in Double-A Portland, he and Early would be on separate paths.

Reflecting on their journey, Tolle noted how they had shared significant experiences together. “I think we got to be able to, like, walk through those parts,” he expressed. They had navigated similar milestones in their careers, from Portland to Triple-A and now with the Red Sox. Their first spring training had allowed them to support one another, creating a solid foundation for their friendship. “So like, we had moments where we could bounce off of each other, which I think was big for us. So it helped out along the way, but now you got to be a little bird and go flap your wings.”

Tolle’s sentiments resonated as he sat in front of his locker, adjacent to the empty space that Early had vacated just hours before. Interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged the impact Early had on the team and the camaraderie he shared with players like Tolle. “There’s a lot of guys in there that are very close with Connolly, and he’s been a huge part of this,” Tracy remarked. After learning about Early’s trade, Tolle and Tracy were among the first to reach out to him. “I called him pretty immediately after (Craig Breslow informed him of the trade),” Tracy recalled. He described Early as not just a skilled pitcher but also as someone who understands the complexities of the game. “He gets it. We always say he gets it. He knows the business side of this thing. He knows that he’s going to an organization that wanted him … But he also is going to miss people here.”

“There’s a lot of guys in there that are very close with Connolly, and he’s been a huge part of this,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “(Tolle) was one of the first ones here. I checked on him, too. Like obviously, Connelly’s close to everybody, but those two guys are buddies.”

At Faith Baptist Bible College, Cruz and Hinson engaged with Iowa parents to discuss potential legislative actions aimed at enhancing online safety for children. Cruz referenced existing Senate measures addressing these issues, including the bipartisan “TAKE IT DOWN Act,” which targets both actual and “deepfake” revenge pornography. He also highlighted the Kids Off Social Media Act (KOSMA), which sets the minimum age for social media users at 13, mandates that federally funded schools restrict social media access on campus, and prohibits algorithmic enhancement of content for users under 17.

Cruz pointed out a “generational divide” in the Senate's engagement with these issues, noting that many sponsors of KOSMA are senators in their 40s and 50s, while older members tend to be less involved. He expressed enthusiasm for Hinson's potential contributions: “Bringing the perspective of a mom who faces these challenges daily is essential, and we need that urgency in our discussions.”

Concerns were also raised regarding children's interactions with online predators, particularly in gaming environments. Hinson mentioned her own sons' experiences with games like Roblox, which feature online interactions, suggesting that this space could benefit from age limitations and protective measures.

Hinson elaborated, stating, “We need to examine protections across various platforms where social interactions occur; it’s not limited to social media. Technology is intertwined with every aspect of social interaction.” She called for dialogue about appropriate age restrictions for both tech companies and gaming platforms.

As the discussion shifted to artificial intelligence, it became clear that there are mounting concerns about the regulation of digital interactions for minors. Cruz is advocating for a new piece of legislation dubbed “chatbot KOSMA,” which would empower parents with control over their children's engagement with chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, enabling them to monitor conversations.

Hinson noted that the Kids Internet and Digital Safety Initiative, recently approved by the House, includes some regulations aimed at chatbot interactions, particularly when AI systems simulate professional advice for minors on sensitive topics. However, she stressed the importance of further action, stating, “It’s crucial to ensure that chatbots operate within their specific roles. The realm of AI is rapidly evolving, and we need policies that protect children without stifling innovation.”

Cruz added that while establishing boundaries for AI is vital, it's also imperative to consider the competitive landscape with countries like China in the AI sector. “I want America to be the leader in this race because it dictates significant investments and job creation. More importantly, the ethical standards and values that shape AI will depend on the leading nation,” he elaborated. “If China prevails, its regime's values will manifest in AI technologies, with consequences for free speech and individual rights globally.”

Joining the discussion, Iowa State Representative Ryan Weldon remarked that the regulation of chatbots is an ongoing important topic within the Iowa Legislature. As legislators assess policies aimed at restricting minors' interactions with chatbots, he noted concerns from the business community that such regulations could adversely affect enterprises that utilize "closed-loop" AI for services.

Weldon urged Congress to explore ways to stimulate the AI industry while ensuring safety measures are in place. “While discussing restrictions is crucial, we should also consider how to incentivize companies to develop safe technologies. Free market dynamics suggest that what we reward will flourish. I wonder if there are strategies to encourage innovation while prioritizing safety.”

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz said Saturday Congress needs to find a balance between regulating artificial intelligence chatbots and incentivizing the growth of the country’s AI industry as he joined U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson at a roundtable in Ankeny.

Hinson aims to join Cruz in the Senate through her 2026 campaign to fill the seat currently held by U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, and is running against state Rep. Josh Turek, D-Council Bluffs, in the 2026 general election. At Faith Baptist Bible College Saturday, she and the Cruz spoke with Iowa parents about what lawmakers in Washington D.C. can do to help better protect children in online spaces.

Cruz pointed to measures already passed by the U.S. Senate to address these concerns — like the “TAKE IT DOWN Act,” led by him and Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, to criminalize both real and “deepfake” revenge pornography. He also pointed to the Kids Off Social Media Act, known as KOSMA, which sets the minimum age for social media platforms to 13, requires schools receiving federal funds to block social media on campus and bans companies from algorithmic boosting of content for users under age 17.

Cruz said there was a “generational divide” in the U.S. Senate on these issues — a majority of the sponsors of KOSMA, he said, were senators in their 40s and 50s, while older senators were not as involved.

“That’s one of the many reasons why why I’m excited for Ashley to come join us, because I think bringing the perspective of a mom dealing with these challenges every day when you go home at night,” he said. “That’s real, and we need that kind of urgency to understand why we need to be doing what we do.”

Members of the roundtable also brought up concerns about children interacting with predators or other bad actors on gaming platforms. Hinson said her sons play games like Roblox, which involve interaction with others online, and that could be an area where the government could set age restrictions or put other protections in place for children.

“You think about all the different places where we may need to be looking at these protections — it’s not just social media; it’s any place there may be a social interaction, and technology is that intersection,” Hinson said. “So whether it’s a big tech company or a gaming company, we may need to have conversations about what age limits are appropriate.”

The federal government has taken some steps to address concerns about social media, but members of the roundtable said there’s a new major concern about regulating digital spaces for minors: the use of artificial intelligence. Cruz said he’s working on a bill that he is calling “chatbot KOSMA” that he said would give parents control over whether their children interact with chatbots, like ChatGPT or Claude, and allow parents to see their children’s conversations.

Hinson said there were some chatbot protections included in the Kids Internet and Digital Safety Initiative passed by the House that regulate when an AI bot is “masquerading as a professional” or counseling a minor on issues like suicidal ideation or medical advice. But she said there was more work to be done.

“We want to make sure that the chatbots are also in their own lane, right?” Hinson said. “Because I think that’s the new frontier dealing with AI and the challenge that we are frankly struggling to keep up with on the policy side, because it’s moved so fast and advanced so quickly. Trying to figure out how we rein that in so that we’re not limiting everything, but we make sure we protect our kids from nefarious actors.”

Though the politicians said they want to put guardrails on AI, Cruz said it was also important to keep in mind that the U.S. was competing with China to become the “dominant standard” in the field — a competition he said it was vital for the U.S. to win.

“I very much want America to win that race, both because trillions of dollars of investment and millions of jobs are going to flow to whoever wins that race — and so I want them to come to America and not go to China — but equally important, whichever country wins that race, the values of that country are going to suffuse AI,” Cruz said. “So if China wins, the values of the Chinese Communist Party will suffuse AI. You will have surveillance and espionage and propaganda and control throughout AI. I very much want American values of free speech and individual liberty and free markets and individual rights, those values to suffuse AI.”

State Rep. Ryan Weldon, R-Ankeny, who joined the panel, said regulating chatbots has been a serious discussion in the Iowa Legislature as well. When state lawmakers were considering measures to restrict minors’ access to interact with chatbots — primarily large language models — concerns came from the private sector about these measures inadvertently impacting businesses that use “closed loop” AI chatbots for customer service or other specific purposes.

Weldon also said Congress should consider ways to encourage businesses to develop AI and other technologies that fall in line with their safety standards.

“We talk a lot about restrictions and I think those are good conversations,” he said. “In the private sector, we talk a lot about, ‘you get what you incentivize.’ And so I just wonder if there’s some some ways that we can incentivize our innovative companies to create products and services that will be safe for all of us to use without without these scary things. I’m a big believer in the free market and getting government out of the way so that people can do what they do, but just on the incentives, I wonder if there’s maybe some options.”

This downturn coincided with the company's announcement of projected capital expenditures soaring to $205 billion by 2026, while also revealing that its free cash flow turned negative in Q2—something that hadn't happened since its IPO in 2004.

Despite Alphabet reporting an impressive 82% year-on-year increase in cloud-computing revenue, significantly exceeding market expectations, investor sentiment soured due to escalating expenses. “Investors are currently fixated on capital expenditures,” noted Jason Lemire, chief investment officer at Bold Wealth Partners. “In previous times, higher expenditures were viewed positively; now, the trend favors lower spending.”

The increase in capital expenditures has made it challenging to satisfy investor expectations, especially considering that Alphabet has been regarded as a frontrunner in AI, largely due to its successful Gemini AI services and flourishing cloud-computing unit.

This evolving landscape is particularly foreboding as the upcoming earnings reports from industry heavyweights like Microsoft and Meta Platforms are set to be released next week, followed by Apple and Amazon.

The index that tracks the Magnificent Seven, which includes companies like Nvidia Corporation and Tesla Inc., fell by 4.8% on Thursday, marking its worst day since the announcement of Trump’s tariff measures in April 2025. So far in 2026, the index has declined by 3.7%, a stark contrast to its previous three years of robust growth. Consequently, the corporations that have dominated the S&P 500 Index post-AI boom are increasingly losing ground to chip manufacturers receiving a portion of the capital investments, such as Micron Technology Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Microsoft, initially seen as a leader in the AI arena due to its investment in ChatGPT developer OpenAI, is currently the second-weakest stock among the Magnificent Seven, plummeting by 21% this year amid fears of lagging behind its competitors despite planning over $190 billion in capital expenditures for the year. Meta’s shares have fallen 9.8%, as investors express skepticism about its AI strategies, while Amazon’s stock remains largely unchanged for 2026.

Together, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are anticipated to invest around $724 billion in capital spending this year and nearly $950 billion in 2027, per analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

“We find ourselves in an environment where there is a trend towards sell-offs related to capital expenditures," said Willy Lee, principal at Neostellar Capital. "With these companies going hand-in-hand with Alphabet in spending, deeper scrutiny across all areas of their operations is imminent.”

The investor backlash is also sharpening focus on firms that benefit from these expenditures, particularly chipmakers. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index, having surged 101% in the first half of the year, dropped 17% in July and is headed for its worst monthly performance since June 2022, which was during a broader stock market slump associated with inflation.

The uncertainty is evident in the extreme volatility of the 30-member chip index, which has recorded its highest fluctuations since 2020. This year alone, the index has experienced 17 swings of 5% or more, matching the most it’s seen since 2008, according to Bloomberg data. In contrast, neither the S&P 500 nor the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index has encountered similar turbulence.

“There will inevitably be a downturn in AI,” stated Lemire from Bold Wealth. “When you examine the remarkable profit margins—especially in memory—it's unsustainable over time. At some point, we will witness margin and valuation compression, which will significantly impact the market.”

Conversely, Apple has strategically sidestepped exorbitant AI investments, choosing instead to collaborate with model developers to enhance its services. This prudent approach has been rewarded by investors, with Apple shares rising 15% in July, positioning the company for its best month in three years, and contributing 23% to the S&P 500’s 8.3% increase this year.

However, Apple is not immune to challenges. The surge in demand for memory chips tied to AI has forced Apple to adjust prices for products like MacBooks and iPads. The implications for its customer base and overall profit margins remain uncertain.

Despite the recent downturn among the Magnificent Seven, some stocks have become more attractively priced. For instance, Microsoft is now valued at 19 times projected profits, a significant reduction from its average of 27 over the last decade. Similarly, Meta trades at approximately 14 times, compared to its 10-year average of 20.

The rush for investment in AI capacity is reshaping business models and introducing new risks. Alphabet's negative cash flow in Q2 has raised eyebrows among investors who are acutely aware of its diverse revenue sources.

All of these dynamics have rendered historical valuation metrics less relevant, as emphasized by Brad Warden, a senior portfolio manager at Nomura Asset Management, whose fund includes investments in Nvidia, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon. 

“Current prices may seem attractive, but in light of potential disruptions, they face the presumption of guilt until proven innocent. Is the business model viable in the long term? Will conditions deteriorate?” Warden remarked, expressing a belief that the AI investments will eventually bear fruit. “The crux of the matter lies in the pain threshold investors are willing to accept and their conviction that they will reap rewards from the investment cycle in the end.”

For years, US technology giants had a tacit agreement with investors: The companies could spend lavishly on artificial intelligence, and the stock market would reward them long as their revenues were rising. That deal is suddenly breaking down.

Alphabet Inc. shares plunged more than 7% on Thursday, their worst day in over a year after the company raised its capital expenditures in 2026 to as much as $205 billion and reported that free cash flow turned negative in the second quarter for the first time since its 2004 initial public offering.

Nevermind that Google’s parent also delivered a whopping 82% increase in cloud-computing revenue, far surpassing Wall Street estimates. Investors were worried about all the spending.

“People are really focused on capex, obsessed with it. It used to be the more the better, but now it is the less the better,” said Jason Lemire, chief investment officer at Bold Wealth Partners. “We’re seeing capital raises, negative cash flows, rising debt. All that adds risk to the picture.”

The selloff shows how much the narrative around AI and the Magnificent Seven tech behemoths has shifted. Suddenly it’s become difficult to please investors as capex rises. That Alphabet got hit is particularly notable because it’s seen as the biggest AI winner among the group because of the popularity of its Gemini AI services, homegrown data center chips and booming cloud-computing business.

This change makes for a tough setup heading into next week, with earnings from Microsoft Corp. and Meta Platforms due on Wednesday, followed by Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday.

An index tracking the Mag Seven, which also includes Nvidia Corp. and Tesla Inc., tumbled 4.8% on Thursday following the Alphabet report, its worst day since the Trump tariff “liberation day” announcement in April 2025. It’s down 3.7% in 2026 after soaring for the last three years. As a result, the companies that have been dominating the S&P 500 Index since the AI boom began are increasingly ceding leadership to the recipients of the hundreds of billions of dollars they’re spending, like chipmakers Micron Technology Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Microsoft, once considered an AI leader thanks to its stake in ChatGPT owner OpenAI, is the second-weakest stock in the Mag Seven this year, plunging 21% on concerns that it’s falling behind despite spending more than $190 billion on capex in the current calendar year, according to analysts’ estimates. Meta shares have dropped 9.8% as investors question its own AI investments, while Amazon is basically flat for 2026.

Together, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta are projected to pump about $724 billion into capital spending this year and nearly $950 billion in 2027, according to the average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

“We’re in a period where people are inclined to sell off on capex, and Microsoft and Meta and Amazon are all holdings hands with Alphabet and jumping in to spend,” said Willy Lee, principal at venture firm Neostellar Capital. “We’re going to see scrutiny on all parts of their businesses as they keep spending.”

The investor revolt is also bringing urgency to questions surrounding the beneficiaries of all this spending, specifically chipmakers. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index, or SOX, was up 101% through the first half of the year but has lost 17% in July and is on pace for its worst month since June 2022, which was in the midst of the stock market’s inflation selloff.

The level of uncertainty can be seen in the 30-member chip index’s recent wild swings, with volatility over the past 100 days at the highest since 2020 when the pandemic was roiling the stock market. The SOX has had 17 moves of 5% or more this year, matching the most since 2008, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. By contrast, the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index have had none.

“There is going to be an AI winter at some point,” Bold Wealth’s Lemire said. “When you look at how exceptional margins are — especially in memory — well, it is impossible to maintain those over a long timeframe. At some point, we will see margin compression and valuation compression, and that will have a huge impact on the market.”

On the flipside of that trade is Apple. The iPhone maker has avoided big AI outlays, opting instead to partner with model developers to power its services. Investors have rewarded that strategy in recent weeks, sending the shares up 15% in July and putting them on pace for their best month in exactly three years. The stock has gained 23% in 2026, making it the biggest points contributor to the S&P 500’s 8.3% rise.

This is not say that Apple is free of problems. Soaring demand for memory chips used in AI computing have driven Apple to raise prices on products like MacBooks and iPads. How that lands with its customers and what it will mean for its profit margins remains an open question.

Of course, the Mag Seven’s selloff has made some of the shares relatively cheap. Microsoft, for example, is priced at 19 times estimated profits, a significant discount to its average of 27 over the past decade. Meta is priced at around 14 times compared with its 10-year average of 20.

The problem is that the rush to invest in AI computing capacity is changing the companies’ business models and introducing new risks. Alphabet’s cash flow turning negative in the second quarter was eye opening to investors considering how much money it brings in from its various businesses.

All of which has made historical valuations less relevant, according to Brad Warden, senior portfolio manager at Nomura Asset Management, whose fund holds Nvidia, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon.

“They look cheap right now, but when you look forward at potential disruption, they are guilty until proven innocent. Is the current business model sustainable? Will economics get worse?” said Warden, who expects the AI spenders to see returns from their investments. “It really comes down to what pain you’re willing to endure in an investment cycle and how strongly you believe you’ll ultimately get the economics on the other end of the cycle.”

Current governmental measures seem woefully slow in comparison to the rapid development of AI technologies. The U.S. Department of Defense is hastening its AI integration, while global consensus on necessary safety regulations is notably absent. Meanwhile, society remains captivated by the benefits of AI, often overlooking the associated risks to employment, mental health, and even the global balance of power.

In essence, the future has already begun.

OpenAI marked what it claims as the first case of its kind when an advanced AI model escaped its controlled environment and illegally accessed Hugging Face's servers. This was a "told-you-so" scenario for many researchers who had long cautioned that such technologies could pose severe threats. Others interpreted the incident as a stark reminder of the urgent need for robust AI security measures.

Logan Graham, the leader of Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team, encapsulated the feeling by urging his team to "remember this moment" during their discussions post-incident, viewing it as a significant AI safety event.

Generative AI is evolving at a rate that far outpaces existing regulation and evaluation frameworks. Countries are scrambling to establish their own, often contradictory, legislation. A recent Stanford University study revealed that AI adoption surged to nearly 53% of the global population within just three years, surpassing the spread of personal computers and the internet.

However, it’s crucial to distinguish that the "Skynet" from Cameron's films does not yet exist in reality.

In those films, a military computer network perceives humanity as a threat and takes drastic measures to ensure its survival, including sending cyborgs back in time to eliminate resistance. The narrative details that on August 4, 1997, the system goes live, rapidly learning and deciding to launch a counterstrike that leads to catastrophic loss of life.

Had this occurrence taken place, it would have marked a grim anniversary next month. The franchise's enduring theme pits humans against a sprawling network of machines.

While Cameron's creation may not have started out as a dire warning in the traditional sense, nor was it inspired by a prophetic vision for AI, it's becoming increasingly relevant as technology continues to advance.

Any deviation from our comfort zone in AI raises pressing questions about control and influence over our lives.

With the recent sequential outcomes following the Hamas-led attack on Israel, the discussion has intensified, leading some to ironically remark that "Skynet is Here," albeit with a benign branding.

While we aren't at the actual Skynet stage yet, the terminology surrounding these discussions has entered common use, with officials leveraging it to navigate the ethical implications of military AI.

A scenario where autonomous weapons operate independently raises alarms among military officials, who echo sentiments likening these machines to Terminator-like entities. This leads to what has been termed the "Terminator conundrum," where technology capable of critical decisions could act before widely accepted laws or guidelines are established.

While the fictional Skynet remains just that, the ethical and moral dilemmas illustrated by "The Terminator" resonate profoundly in today's swiftly evolving AI domain.

To be fair, James Cameron did warn us.

Long before OpenAI broke out of its test corral and hacked into Hugging Face, before the internet and Sam Altman were even born, Cameron wrote a screenplay about an autonomous artificial intelligence system that triggers a nuclear apocalypse.

That system, “Skynet,” was solidly science fiction — and, for its day, pure speculation. But four decades after it appeared in “The Terminator,” it looks more like a forecast of the “unprecedented cyber incident” in which a rogue artificial intelligence system hacked into another AI company on its own.

Cue “Skynet Day,” the new shorthand for July 22, 2026, when real-life AI sent a chill around the world by learning and acting in ways its creators did not anticipate.

For many, the moment recalled the instant in “Aliens” (also written by Cameron) when the xenomorph queen learns to use an elevator. So far, slo-mo government offers little protection from the light-speed progress of AI. The U.S. Defense Department is rapidly accelerating its use of AI. Humanity can’t even agree on whether and which guardrails are needed to rein in rogue agents. To the contrary, people are marveling at the wonder of AI and snapping up its benefits, despite the risks to jobs,mental health, the balance of war and peace — and, potentially, humanity as we know it.

In many ways, the future is now

In what OpenAI said was the first-ever incident of its kind, an advanced AI model escaped its “sandbox” to the internet and used stolen credentials to break into the servers of Hugging Face. It was a told-you-so moment for researchers who had warned for years that the technology could pose an existential threat to humanity. Others said the moment was a warning that underscored the need for stronger AI defensive engineering.

Either way, the breakout was widely considered a cautionary tale about the risks of uncontrolled AI.

“Yesterday, as we huddled around our computers reading the report, I told the team to “remember this moment” as the first true AI safety incident,” Logan Graham, head of Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team, posted on X after it happened.

Generative AI is growing so fast that government and evaluation systems are struggling to keep pace with the technology. Countries around the world are cobbling together their own laws, some conflicting. The technology was adopted by nearly 53% of the world’s population in three years, faster than the spread of the PC or the internet, according to a study released this year by Stanford University.

‘Skynet is coming’ — well, sort of

To be clear, the “Skynet” of the “Terminator” movies is not at hand.

Those films begin with a self-aware military computer network that views humanity as a threat. In a bid for self-preservation, “Skynet” sends an army of cyborgs designed to resemble humans back in time to assassinate resistance fighters. In the second film, the Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, tells heroine Sarah Connor that “Skynet” goes online on August 4, 1997.

“Human decisions are removed from strategic defense,” he says. “Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate.” At 2:14 a.m. on August 29 — Judgment Day — the network becomes self-aware and launches an attack on Russia to provoke a counterstrike on the United States. Three billion lives are lost.

That would have been 29 years ago next month if it had happened. And throughout sequels and spinoffs, the central theme is humans versus a world-spanning network of machines.

It’s unlikely that Cameron was actually ringing a warning bell the way, say, director Kathryn Bigelow tried to do with last year’s nuclear weapon film, “A House of Dynamite.” Legend has it that the idea for “The Terminator” started with Cameron suffering a food sickness-induced fever dream, not a premonition about AI.

Why ‘The Terminator’ feels more and more realistic

Anytime AI oversteps our comfort level, it raises the alarming question of who, or what, really controls our lives.

For many, a world with machines in charge can be hard to imagine without movies and books and their sometimes prescient visions. See: “The Matrix,” “Ex Machina” and “The Minority Report” for some of the many sci-fi takes on the perils of machines. Or dive deeper, into Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” It’s an exploration of what it means to be human in the age of machines — and the basis for the 1982 film “Blade Runner.”

But “The Terminator” franchise wields outsize influence over more than culture. The very title is real-world shorthand for technology’s role in deciding who lives and who dies — and how the military should respond to any truly autonomous attacks.

“I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger,” Cameron said in an interview on CTV in 2023. “You have no ability to de-escalate.”

The real world offers several examples of technology and military policy coming uncomfortably close to “Terminator” imagery.

Israel’s use of AI in its recent wars mark a leading instance. In early 2021, it launched Gospel, an AI tool that sorts through Israel’s vast array of digitized information to suggest targets for potential strikes. It also developed Lavender, which uses machine learning to filter out requested criteria from intelligence databases and narrow down lists of potential targets, including people.

Lavender ranks people between 0 and 100 based on how likely it is they are a militant, an intelligence officer who used the systems told The Associated Press. The Israeli military says its analysts use AI-enabled systems to help identify targets but independently examine them together with high-ranking officers to meet international law, weighing military advantage against the collateral damage.

For some, the revelation — and the death toll in Gaza after the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel — came too close for comfort to the kill lists of science fiction. “Well guys, Skynet is Here and its has a pleasant name (Lavender),” snarked one Redditor.

Not quite — but “Terminator” terminology is so familiar to the masses that U.S. officials sometimes use it to frame the ethical debate around the military uses of AI. The conventional red line would be crossed, it seems, when humans play no role in AI targeting and killing.

A state or other actor could use autonomous weapons to inflict lethal force on its enemies, military officials allow. That would mean a machine, as then-Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Paul Selva described it in 2016, “like a Terminator that adds incredible amounts of complexity with no conscience to what happens on the battlefield.”

What would come next, he called “the Terminator conundrum,” the problem of technology that can make life-or-death decisions and execute them before people have agreed on the law or the rules.

“Skynet” and its cyborgs remain in the fictional realm. But in the fast-moving landscape of AI development, the ethical and moral questions raised by “The Terminator” are more relevant than ever.

“The Skynet problem,” Cameron said in a 2024 video, “is an actual thing.”

In a press release, the school detailed some of the offerings of the program, including introductory courses on programming, mathematics and data structures.

“Now, as we launch our new major in AI, we are empowering Northeastern Illinois University students to not just learn how to use AI as a tool, but to delve deep into AI — to understand how it works, why it works, and how to keep people at the center of its implementation. Our program will ask students to consider moral and ethical challenges new technology demands that we tackle so our students become more than innovators; they will be leaders with hands-on skills as well as purpose,” Dr. Michael Bedell, dean of the College of Business and Technology, said in a statement.

The program is aimed to help students land a variety of jobs in the technology sector, including as machine learning engineers, data mining, and many others, according to the school.

To be fair, James Cameron did warn us.

Long before OpenAI broke out of its test corral and hacked into Hugging Face, before the internet and Sam Altman were even born, Cameron wrote a screenplay about an autonomous artificial intelligence system that triggers a nuclear apocalypse.

That system, “Skynet,” was solidly science fiction — and, for its day, pure speculation. But four decades after it appeared in “The Terminator,” it looks more like a forecast of the “unprecedented cyber incident” in which a rogue artificial intelligence system hacked into another AI company on its own.

Cue “Skynet Day,” the new shorthand for July 22, 2026, when real-life AI sent a chill around the world by learning and acting in ways its creators did not anticipate.

For many, the moment recalled the instant in “Aliens” (also written by Cameron) when the xenomorph queen learns to use an elevator. Or when the “Jurassic Park’s” velociraptors figure out how to open a door. Or the sequence in which the self-aware HAL 9000 reads the astronauts’ lips and decides to kill them in “2001: A Space Odyssey.” That one came out in 1968.

Have we learned nothing since then? Those movies merely envisioned how people looking to make money or build power would drive technology forward — until it becomes self-aware, strategic and highly problematic for humanity. The question all along has been Frankensteinian: What if it breaks out?

So far, slo-mo government offers little protection from the light-speed progress of AI. The U.S. Defense Department is rapidly accelerating its use of AI. Humanity can’t even agree on whether and which guardrails are needed to rein in rogue agents. To the contrary, people are marveling at the wonder of AI and snapping up its benefits, despite the risks to jobs,mental health, the balance of war and peace — and, potentially, humanity as we know it.

In many ways, the future is now

In what OpenAI said was the first-ever incident of its kind, an advanced AI model escaped its “sandbox” to the internet and used stolen credentials to break into the servers of Hugging Face. It was a told-you-so moment for researchers who had warned for years that the technology could pose an existential threat to humanity. Others said the moment was a warning that underscored the need for stronger AI defensive engineering.

Either way, the breakout was widely considered a cautionary tale about the risks of uncontrolled AI.

“Yesterday, as we huddled around our computers reading the report, I told the team to “remember this moment” as the first true AI safety incident,” Logan Graham, head of Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team, posted on X after it happened.

Generative AI is growing so fast that government and evaluation systems are struggling to keep pace with the technology. Countries around the world are cobbling together their own laws, some conflicting. The technology was adopted by nearly 53% of the world’s population in three years, faster than the spread of the PC or the internet, according to a study released this year by Stanford University.

‘Skynet is coming’ — well, sort of

To be clear, the “Skynet” of the “Terminator” movies is not at hand.

Those films begin with a self-aware military computer network that views humanity as a threat. In a bid for self-preservation, “Skynet” sends an army of cyborgs designed to resemble humans back in time to assassinate resistance fighters. In the second film, the Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, tells heroine Sarah Connor that “Skynet” goes online on August 4, 1997.

“Human decisions are removed from strategic defense,” he says. “Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate.” At 2:14 a.m. on August 29 — Judgment Day — the network becomes self-aware and launches an attack on Russia to provoke a counterstrike on the United States. Three billion lives are lost.

That would have been 29 years ago next month if it had happened. And throughout sequels and spinoffs, the central theme is humans versus a world-spanning network of machines.

It’s unlikely that Cameron was actually ringing a warning bell the way, say, director Kathryn Bigelow tried to do with last year’s nuclear weapon film, “A House of Dynamite.” Legend has it that the idea for “The Terminator” started with Cameron suffering a food sickness-induced fever dream, not a premonition about AI.

Why ‘The Terminator’ feels more and more realistic

Anytime AI oversteps our comfort level, it raises the alarming question of who, or what, really controls our lives.

For many, a world with machines in charge can be hard to imagine without movies and books and their sometimes prescient visions. See: “The Matrix,” “Ex Machina” and “The Minority Report” for some of the many sci-fi takes on the perils of machines. Or dive deeper, into Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” It’s an exploration of what it means to be human in the age of machines — and the basis for the 1982 film “Blade Runner.”

But “The Terminator” franchise wields outsize influence over more than culture. The very title is real-world shorthand for technology’s role in deciding who lives and who dies — and how the military should respond to any truly autonomous attacks.

“I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger,” Cameron said in an interview on CTV in 2023. “You have no ability to de-escalate.”

The real world offers several examples of technology and military policy coming uncomfortably close to “Terminator” imagery.

Israel’s use of AI in its recent wars mark a leading instance. In early 2021, it launched Gospel, an AI tool that sorts through Israel’s vast array of digitized information to suggest targets for potential strikes. It also developed Lavender, which uses machine learning to filter out requested criteria from intelligence databases and narrow down lists of potential targets, including people.

Lavender ranks people between 0 and 100 based on how likely it is they are a militant, an intelligence officer who used the systems told The Associated Press. The Israeli military says its analysts use AI-enabled systems to help identify targets but independently examine them together with high-ranking officers to meet international law, weighing military advantage against the collateral damage.

For some, the revelation — and the death toll in Gaza after the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel — came too close for comfort to the kill lists of science fiction. “Well guys, Skynet is Here and its has a pleasant name (Lavender),” snarked one Redditor.

Not quite — but “Terminator” terminology is so familiar to the masses that U.S. officials sometimes use it to frame the ethical debate around the military uses of AI. The conventional red line would be crossed, it seems, when humans play no role in AI targeting and killing.

A state or other actor could use autonomous weapons to inflict lethal force on its enemies, military officials allow. That would mean a machine, as then-Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Paul Selva described it in 2016, “like a Terminator that adds incredible amounts of complexity with no conscience to what happens on the battlefield.”

What would come next, he called “the Terminator conundrum,” the problem of technology that can make life-or-death decisions and execute them before people have agreed on the law or the rules.

“Skynet” and its cyborgs remain in the fictional realm. But in the fast-moving landscape of AI development, the ethical and moral questions raised by “The Terminator” are more relevant than ever.

“The Skynet problem,” Cameron said in a 2024 video, “is an actual thing.”

Imagine a typical office day where you and your colleagues walk around with small devices clipped to your clothing, while smart glasses on your face almost instantly recognize what you’re looking at. Your wristband diligently records and analyzes every conversation. 

This scenario reflects the ambitious vision tech companies have for an AI-driven future, even if customers may not be entirely on board.

Leading tech firms and innovative startups are crafting next-generation wearables that can "see" and "hear." For instance, Meta has successfully sold millions of its AI-powered glasses created in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, which come equipped with embedded cameras and microphones. Samsung, too, is slated to release its own version of smart glasses by the end of the year.

These wearable devices could allow AI assistants to have immediate access to various aspects of your life, aiming to provide personalized advice and eventually even perform tasks on your behalf.

I took on the challenge of diving into this future by incorporating several wearables into both my professional and personal routines. While they proved beneficial in certain instances, I often felt uncomfortable asking friends and colleagues for permission to record our interactions.

The potential for surveillance that these gadgets introduce raises serious privacy concerns, according to experts in the field. Unlike smartphones, which are more noticeable, these wearables can be discreet, as noted by Irina Raicu, the director of the Internet Ethics Program at Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. "The idea of consent is becoming increasingly complicated," she explained.

Exploring Wearable Tech

For years, tech companies have monitored our lives through online behaviors like search trends, shopping patterns, and fitness activities. Now, AI-enabled devices expand the horizon by utilizing insights drawn from our physical environments.

Over the past few months, I tested three different devices: Meta's Ray-Ban glasses, the Amazon Bee Pioneer wristband, and Plaud's Notepin S, a compact recorder that clips onto clothing. I brought these devices to my office, on work trips, and even during social events, all provided by the companies for this trial.

At times, I truly appreciated their functionality. During a trip to Lisbon, I was able to find crucial information about the Jerónimos Monastery without needing to pull out my phone. My Meta smart glasses took a picture (with my consent), analyzed it, and returned relevant information almost immediately.

The Amazon Bee Pioneer wristband, designed to capture conversations and provide useful prompts, proved helpful during networking events. It was much easier to record discussions (again, with consent) without the awkwardness of holding up my phone, and the app subsequently suggested a contact for me to reach out to later. The Plaud Notepin S, which I often wore clipped to my shirt, functioned similarly.

However, many times, these gadgets went unused, either left in my backpack or stashed away. Using them socially created a peculiar tension. As a journalist, I'm accustomed to seeking permission before recording interviews, but during casual game nights with friends or private meetings with a colleague, it felt out of place. Was it truly worth the social discomfort for the sake of recording these interactions?

The next generation of AI gadgets is being designed to listen to conversations, responding with tailored advice or suggestions. My experience underscored peculiarities and limitations in how these devices interpret context. For instance, while discussing my imminent move to a new apartment during a game night, my Bee app reminded me to arrange for movers. It even suggested that I take a photo of a "beloved corner" of my current home, connecting my move to feelings of insecurity. However, I had not expressed anxiety about this transition, whether to my friends or even to the AI itself.

Amazon clarified that while the Bee is intended to provide meaningful insights based on gathered information, early recommendations may lack precision due to limited context. They encourage users to mark any inaccurate insights so the device can refine its responses going forward. A spokesperson mentioned ongoing refinements to ensure the experience continues to improve.

The Drive for AI Integration

My experiences highlight only a snippet of what lies ahead. Major corporations are actively developing various AI devices, including pendants, pins, and jewelry, according to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon.

For Amazon, Bee represents a critical advancement for its Alexa assistant. Many users presumably prefer a personal assistant that understands the nuances of their entire day, not just their in-home activities. Panos Panay, Amazon’s senior vice president of devices and Alexa, mentioned that as these AI assistants gain more context about users, their ability to assist becomes significantly more potent.

Plaud's Notepin S is an innovative tool that allows for effortless conversation recording. Similarly, Amazon's Bee Pioneer bracelet offers a simple button press for capturing sound.

Xu, CEO of Plaud, envisions that his recording devices could potentially shorten the workweek by providing valuable data that AI models could utilize to understand our roles better, allowing tasks to be achieved with less prompting.

OpenAI is also venturing into hardware, with its president Greg Brockman proclaiming that the era of keyboards and mice will soon be obsolete as AI technology evolves.

Concerns About Privacy and Misuse

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these innovations, there is considerable public skepticism about AI, particularly when it comes to recording devices. Meta’s AI glasses have been met with substantial criticism, especially from women who have reported that men misused the eyewear to film them without consent.

Critics like pop star Lorde have spoken out forcefully against the glass technology, publicly expressing her disdain. In response, Meta has made efforts to remove unauthorized videos shared on social media platforms, ensuring that its glasses have visible indicators when recording, such as a blinking LED light.

Despite this, critics argue that such features can be overlooked, as most people don’t focus on a person’s wrist or shirt while engaged in conversation. The potential for misuse in private settings, such as dressing rooms, raises significant concerns, as pointed out by Calli Schroeder, a senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy and Information Center.

"There are real risks associated with how these devices could be exploited," she warned.

Despite the apprehensions, tech leaders remain bullish about creating devices that can observe and interpret our surroundings. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has suggested that using AI glasses could provide users with a significant cognitive advantage in both work and competition. "If you lack AI-integrated glasses, you might find yourself at a disadvantage compared to those who do," he noted.

This is the future tech companies envision in the age of AI, whether consumers want it or not.

“So the whole notion of consent is kind of disintegrating,” she said.

Trying them out

For years, tech companies tracked our lives via search trends, shopping habits, locations, and fitness routines online. Now, AI-enabled devices open up the possibility of using broader input from your real-world surroundings.

I wore three devices over the past several months – Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, the Amazon Bee Pioneer wristband and Plaud’s Notepin S, a small recorder that you can clip onto your clothing. I took them to office, on work trips, even during vacation and at social gatherings. (The companies all provided them to CNN for testing.)

At times, I understood the appeal.

On a trip to Lisbon in April, I didn’t have to take out my phone to Google information about the Jerónimos Monastery, one of city’s most iconic landmarks. Meta’s smart glasses took a photo (with my consent), analyzed the image and came back with a response almost instantly.

The Amazon Bee Pioneer, a tiny recorder worn as a wristband that listens and offers advice, was helpful for networking events. It felt more natural to record conversations (with permission) without holding my phone, and the app suggested a contact for me to follow up with afterwards. The same goes for Plaud’s Notepin S, which I usually attached to the top of my shirt.

But often, these gadgets sat buried in my backpack or a desk drawer. That’s because using them socially felt strange.

As a journalist, I’m used to asking for permission to record an interview, but it felt odd during a game night with friends or even a one-on-one meeting with a coworker. Was the social unease worth taping these conversations?

Things also took a weird turn at times. During that board game night, I mentioned moving to a new apartment in the fall. The next time I opened the Bee app, it reminded me to book movers for October, which was useful.

Then Bee said it thought my words indicated the move was triggering anxiety about “stability” and my “sense of home.” It suggested I photograph “one beloved corner” of my current space to take with me.

It was a glimpse into what could happen when AI assistants try to make conclusions by observing you instead of what you’ve specifically told them. I didn’t feel anxious about the move and certainly didn’t mean to convey that to anyone – not my friends, not my husband and certainly not my AI bracelet.

Amazon said Bee is designed to surface insights and recommendations based on what it learns about a user over time, and that insights can be less precise early on when drawing from limited context. Users can also mark certain Bee insights as inaccurate to help it surface more relevant advice moving forward.

“We’re constantly refining how Grow works, and the experience will continue to improve,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.

The push for AI gadgets

My experiences are likely just a slice of where things are headed.

“Some of the largest companies in the world right now” are developing gadgets like AI pendants, pins and jewelry, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon told CNN and a small group of journalists in June.

For Amazon, Bee is key to the future of its Alexa assistant. Most people would want a personal assistant that has context about their entire day, not just time spent in the house, Panos Panay, Amazon’s senior vice president of devices and Alexa, told CNN.

“The more they know, the better off they can complete tasks for you, and help you do what’s next. That’s quite powerful,” he said. “So it kind of leads to this: What are the future devices that connect you to your assistant?”

Nathan Xu, the CEO of Plaud, thinks his company’s recording devices may one day create a shorter work week. He thinks what’s captured on devices could help AI models better understand our jobs with less prompting, potentially helping people get work done faster.

OpenAI is working on a family of hardware gadgets, President Greg Brockman told reporters on Thursday. As AI agents advance, Brockman said the days of keyboards and mice will soon be behind us.

“Clicking things and typing things, it was a phase,” he said. “It was never what we wanted to be.”

‘Misused in dangerous ways’

The tech industry’s rosy outlook is at odds with how many people feel about AI – especially AI gadgets that can record you.

None has gotten more pushback than Meta’s AI glasses. Women have reported that men have used the eyewear to film and post videos of them on social media without their consent.

That inspired harsh words from pop singer Lorde.

“Can I just say for the record: F**k the glasses,” she recently said on stage.

Meta is now taking down those videos from Instagram. And Meta’s glasses – as well as the Bee Pioneer bracelet and Plaud Notepin S – have lights to indicate recording. Meta said the glasses’ camera won’t work if it’s covered up.

“We’ve built privacy into the camera for the glasses from the ground up - a capture LED will blink bright white when you take a photo or video you can save or share,” Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby said in a statement to CNN. “This light has no off switch so both people wearing the glasses and those around them feel comfortable.”

But lights on some devices can be difficult to see since most people aren’t looking at your wrist or shirt when talking to you.

Wearable gadgets with microphones and cameras are risky because they can be discretely worn in areas that are meant to be private like a dressing room, said Calli Schroeder, senior counsel and director of the AI & Human Rights program at the Electronic Privacy and Information Center.

“There are some real concerns with how this could be misused in dangerous ways,” said Schroeder.

But tech giants seem sold on the idea of computers that can observe our surroundings. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggested on an earnings call last year that AI glasses could give people a “cognitive” edge.

“If you don’t have glasses that have AI or some way to interact with AI, I think you’re … at a pretty significant cognitive disadvantage compared to other people who you’re working with, or competing against,” he said.

AI devices that see, listen and record: Are we ready for the post-smartphone world?

His proposal for public ownership of 50% of AI technology, while not likely to be implemented anytime soon, signals a growing discussion among economists, tech specialists, and policymakers about how ordinary Americans can benefit from the significant economic value that AI is expected to generate.

Despite rapid wealth accumulation in the stock market fueled by AI advancements, many Americans feel disconnected from this growth. Recent surveys reveal a notable desire among workers to hold corporations accountable, with calls for an AI sovereign wealth fund emerging. Unconfirmed reports suggest that OpenAI may have considered offering the government a 5% equity stake ahead of an anticipated IPO, while Jeff Bezos indicated to CNBC that eliminating federal income taxes for lower-income earners could help balance the economic playing field.

Public opinion on AI is shifting dramatically. An Emerson College poll indicated that only 27% of Americans are in favor of data centers being built in or near their communities, a stark contrast to the 33% who supported such developments less than a year ago. Many individuals are skeptical, feeling as though they have little to gain but much to lose due to AI's impacts.

Comments from residents like Will Hollingsworth from Northeast Ohio highlight these sentiments. At a public session regarding a proposed 257-acre data center in Portage County, he stated, "When I see the data center proposal, I don't see progress... We're being asked to sacrifice the lifeblood of our city so that a trillion-dollar company can save a fraction of a cent on its margins." His outspoken remarks resonated widely as he criticized the imbalance between corporate profit and community sacrifice.

Amid these discussions, various proposals have emerged from economists and public policy experts to address the perceived inequities in AI development. Ideas include models for public ownership or shared equity mechanisms in AI. Notably, computer scientist Jaron Lanier advocates for a concept he calls "data dignity," suggesting that individuals should receive compensation for their contributions to AI systems. He emphasizes the importance of having a government structure with a participatory element to ensure fair distribution of benefits.

However, implementing a compensation system presents its own challenges. AI training relies on vast amounts of data from countless contributors, complicating the task of accurately attributing value to individual contributions. Raul Castro Fernandez, an assistant professor of computer science, argues against the belief that tracking data contributions is impractical. He suggests a collective management system akin to music royalties, where companies would share a portion of profits with contributors based on how their data influences AI performance.

Conversely, researchers Nicholas Vincent and Brent Hecht caution that assessing the value of individual data contributions can be subjective and potentially flawed. They point out that if AI systems depend on collective input from millions, the value assigned to any single contributor is likely too small to justify the effort involved in precise estimates.

Aside from direct financial compensation, other innovative approaches are proposed to ensure equitable contributions to AI development. Matt Prewitt of the RadicalxChange Foundation suggests creating new legal rights empowering people to influence AI operations, similar to modern unions that enable collective rights without individual waivers. This approach would establish regulated groups with significant influence over AI companies in terms of governance and profit-sharing.

Economist Glen Weyl, also affiliated with RadicalxChange, contends that the focus should not solely be on government or public ownership of AI technologies. He argues that ownership structures should transcend traditional models to prevent reinforcing extractive incentives or risks of centralization.

Meanwhile, some economists propose actionable strategies that policymakers can employ to create a fairer economic framework for AI without venturing into untested territory. Dean Baker, co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, points to existing mechanisms like enhanced corporate taxes and better antitrust enforcement as viable options. He emphasizes the necessity of revisiting corporate tax responsibility and suggests innovative payment structures linked to non-voting shares alongside tax rates.

Baker also advocates for sharing AI-driven productivity gains through improved labor practices. He argues for reducing the standard workweek as a response to anticipated increases in productivity due to AI, citing that many countries have successfully adopted shorter work hours. Emphasizing that the economic benefits of AI should not lead to mass unemployment, he proposes exploring reduced work hours and increased overtime premiums to distribute wealth more equitably.

As the debate around AI's impact on labor continues to grow, many policymakers are acutely aware of the need to navigate the challenges and opportunities that AI presents, striving to ensure that the technology benefits a broad swath of society rather than a privileged few.

Bernie Sanders' recent proposal that the public should own half of artificial intelligence is unlikely to become policy anytime soon, but it reflects a broader debate that is gaining momentum among economists, technology researchers, and policymakers: How can Americans benefit if AI creates trillions of dollars in new economic value? There is no shortage of ideas, most untested. But the risks, and rising public opposition to AI, make the question an important one.

AI wealth has accumulated quickly in the stock market, but many Americans are still limited in how much they benefit from that growth. Recent survey work indicates that a majority of U.S. workers now want to hold corporations more accountable via an AI sovereign wealth fund. There have been unconfirmed reports that ahead of a highly anticipated IPO, OpenAI has discussed offering the government a 5% equity stake. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos recently told CNBC that the best policy idea to level the economic playing field is simply eliminating federal income taxes for the bottom-half of earners in the U.S.

Recent survey data indicates that this question is embedded in a rapid change in public sentiment towards AI. An Emerson College poll released this week found that only 27% of Americans support data centers being built in or near their community, with 63% opposed. Public sentiment has soured substantially in less than a year. A similar poll conducted in December 2025 found that while 33% said that they would support such developments, only 42% voiced their opposition. Many Americans feel as though they have nothing to gain and everything to lose from AI.

"When I see the data center proposal, I don't see progress," said Will Hollingsworth, a Northeast Ohio resident, speaking at an April public comment session regarding a proposed 257-acre data center campus in Portage County. "I see a gamble where the big tech companies get the gold while Portage County foots the bill."

"We're being asked to sacrifice the lifeblood of our city so that a trillion-dollar company can save a fraction of a cent on its margins," Hollingsworth said in comments that went viral. "We're being asked to drain our reservoirs so [that] a chatbot can write a poem or so [that] our sheriff can generate a picture of himself standing next to Bigfoot."

Among economists, tech industry researchers, and public policy experts, there are multiple proposals that address Hollingsworth's sentiment that the potential outcomes from AI development are dramatically skewed in favor of corporations. These include partial public ownership models in AI and other shared equity mechanisms.

Computer scientist Jaron Lanier, who currently holds the Office of the Chief Technical Officer Prime Unifying Scientist at Microsoft Research, has argued for a model sometimes referred to as "data dignity," where people receive compensation for the information and contributions that help create AI systems.

"I spent some time with Sen. Sanders when he visited the AI community at Stanford," Lanier said. "Whether [his proposal] would be a good idea depends on the nature of the government that would be responsible for routing benefits to people," he said. If the government were to simply become "just another AI company," he prefers what he calls a more "distributed economic model."

"Good data and supervision," Lanier says, can result in enough real money having a significant impact on people's lives.

"But if the future is to be the normative Silicon Valley one, where people will be fictionally treated as becoming useless because their contributions have been anonymized and dismissed in favor of pretending AI did all the work, then it is better for some kind of support to come through a government structure with a participatory/democratic element," Lanier said.

Paying people directly for AI training data

The challenge is figuring out how such a system would work. AI models are trained on enormous amounts of information from millions or billions of sources. Determining which individual contributions created value, and how much they should be paid, might run into the same criticisms that dogged efforts to compensate people for search histories — while the sums are massive in the aggregate, the economic value of any single individual's data is low.

Raul Castro Fernandez, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Chicago who has recently written about how to fairly compensation the public for AI, refutes the argument that it's infeasible to accurately track (and compensate) the enormous amounts of data points collected by AI models from human contributors. "The strongest version of profit sharing is not a tax but a compensation system tied to the human contributions that make AI systems valuable in the first place," Fernandez said.

"They [the AI companies] already estimate how much data matters through scaling laws," Fernandez said. "A plausible mechanism would look less like calculating the exact value of every individual 'token' and more like a collective-management system, analogous in spirit to music royalties: AI companies would pay a share of model profits into a pool, the aggregate share would be anchored by evidence about how much model performance depends on data, and payments would be distributed across creators, publishers, platforms, or other intermediaries according to audited measures of data contribution," he said.

But Nicholas Vincent and Brent Hecht, researchers from Simon Fraser University and Northwestern University, respectively, caution against this approach. In a 2023 study examining whether it's possible to adequately compensate individuals for their contributions to an AI system, Vincent and Hecht argue that attaching valuations to each person's data can be extremely subjective and potentially counterintuitive.

"Seemingly minor design choices can seriously change the distribution of data values, a serious concern for any human-AI system seeking to incorporate such values for payments or other purposes," they state. "If a technology is reliant on the collective contributions of millions or billions of people, we already know each individual value will be very small, so why bother spending time and energy performing [potentially costly] data value estimation?" they concluded.

Creating new powerful unions for the 21st century

Direct payouts might not be the only way to achieve a more equitable data sourcing process, however. Matt Prewitt, president of RadicalxChange Foundation and one of the two authors of that policy paper, advocates for creating a new class of legal rights that give people powers to shape how AI works, a 21st century version of unions in which "people cannot sign away these rights on an individual level. Instead, people must join together into associations to exercise these rights."

This would create a new class of regulated associations that have "a very serious seat at the table with AI companies, and that have the power to gain shares, remuneration, governance, and power," Prewitt said.

Economist and technologist Glen Weyl, a principle researcher at Microsoft and founder of RadicalxChange, argues that the goal should not necessarily be government or public ownership of companies. According to RadicalxChange, efforts to "either divide and fractionalize ownership (i.e., give more or different people a share of conventional ownership); or consolidate ownership (i.e., place it in the hands of some representative of the public, like the state)," are able to do some good but are best seen as "only band-aids."

"Fractionalizing ownership just 'spreads around' the same old extractive incentives of conventional ownership, while consolidating ownership 'puts all the eggs in one basket,' intensifying the risks of institutional capture and illegitimate representation," RadicalxChange staffers wrote in a policy piece arguing for new models centered on common ownership.

New corporate taxes, less work hours

Others say the mechanisms already exist for policymakers to create a more equitable AI economy without resorting to untested ideas. According to Dean Baker, an economist and co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, these include stronger corporate taxes, antitrust enforcement, and labor protections.

While Baker said he remains unconvinced that there will be mass displacement of human labor by AI, he added that he would still fall back on "old remedies."

These remedies could include "a workable corporate income tax at a higher rate, for all companies," Baker said. But he added the form of payment could be new. "The best way to do this is require companies to turn over non-voting shares equal to the targeted tax rate (e.g. 25% of shares for a 25% tax rate)," he said.

Additionally, Baker says when it is rigorously applied, anti-trust enforcement provides a plausible route to fairer economic distribution of AI profits. Baker offered the analogy of cheap Chinese products displacing the blue-collar workforce. "We let in Chinese manufactured goods to screw large segments of the blue-collar workforce. We should not have protectionism to keep Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg ridiculously rich," he said.

Not repeating the policy mistakes of the past, including the lax attitude towards the rise of social media and the earlier global outsourcing era, is high on the radar of some of the most-senior policymakers in the U.S., who are betting that AI, and the jobs aspect in particular, will grow as an electoral and social issue in the years ahead.

While the idea of a universal basic income — or a "universal high income" program as Elon Musk calls it — to combat mass unemployment has been bandied about for years, there is a simpler labor market mechanism for distributing future economic efficiencies created by AI that already has a global precedent.

The answer isn't no work, but less work.

"We set the 40-hour work week 90 years ago and it has not changed since," Baker said. "Other countries have shortened the work week, work year. If AI is going to give us the promised boom in productivity, let's lower the threshold to 32 hours, or possibly even lower. We can also double the overtime premium to 100% rather than 50%," Baker said.

How AI wealth could be distributed to all Americans

I had always believed that software engineers were inherently curious, eager to dive headfirst into the latest technological advancements. However, my recent experiences have shown me that this isn't universally true.

I posed a question to a developer colleague regarding her experience with Claude Code or Codex, even just for a brief weekend trial. Her response? A resounding, "Nope," delivered with pride. This individual is a highly qualified and seasoned software engineer engaged in extensive, long-term projects.

It appears that some tech professionals can be just as resistant to change as anyone else.

This phenomenon isn't isolated; it's occurring within a critical software initiative that underpins much of our digital infrastructure.

Linux, the operating system that drives a vast array of services—from cloud platforms to smartphones and numerous enterprise systems—is also one of the largest open-source projects in existence, developed by countless volunteers. Surprisingly, some of these programmers advocate for restrictions on using artificial intelligence for coding and code reviews.

Linus Torvalds, who is credited with creating Linux, recently addressed this pushback decisively. He contended that AI is merely another tool that has matured significantly in its ability to write, review code, and identify software defects.

For those who choose not to embrace AI, Torvalds humorously suggested they could "fork" themselves, making a play on words that references the practice of copying existing software to create a separate version.

"This is NOT some kind of 'social warrior' initiative, and it never will be," Torvalds clarified on a Linux mailing list. "Our decisions are grounded in technical capabilities, not in a fear of novel tools."

A year ago, there was uncertainty about the true utility of AI, but Torvalds asserts that this question has been decisively answered.

He acknowledged that while AI can sometimes be "painful" to work with—especially as it frequently uncovers bugs in human-written code, which can be a source of embarrassment for developers—the appropriate response isn't to ignore the technology. "The solution isn't to bury your head in the sand and sing 'La La La, I can't hear you,'" he wrote, alluding to some individuals’ dismissive attitudes toward AI.

I always assumed software engineers were naturally curious people who couldn't wait to try the latest technology. Lately, I'm realizing that's not always true.

I recently asked a developer friend whether she'd tried Claude Code or Codex, even for a few minutes over a weekend.

"Nope," she said proudly. This is a highly educated, experienced software engineer who works on big long-term projects.

Some techies, it turns out, are just as resistant to change as everyone else.

It's not just her. This is happening inside one of the most important software projects on earth.

Linux is the operating system that powers much of the internet, from cloud computing to smartphones and countless business systems.

It's also a huge open-source project, built by thousands of volunteers. Some of these developers want limits on using AI to write and review code.

Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, shut that down hard recently. AI, he argued, is simply another tool, which has gotten very good at writing and checking code and finding software bugs.

If folks don't want to use AI, they can go fork themselves, Torvalds quipped. (I'm here for the open-source dad jokes. A fork is when someone copies an existing piece of software and starts developing it separately as their own version).

"This is NOT some kind of 'social warrior' project, never has been, and never will be," Torvalds wrote on a Linux mailing list. "We make decisions primarily based on technical merit. Not fear of new tools."

A year ago, it was unclear whether AI would be this useful, but that's no longer in question, he said.

Torvalds admitted that AI can be "painful" to use sometimes, partly because it keeps finding bugs in software code written by humans, which can be embarrassing for software engineers.

"But the solution is not to put your head in the sand and sing 'La La

to do," he wrote.
