Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly enhance educational outcomes. However, many leaders in education are struggling to find the necessary policy frameworks for responsible AI integration. To address this issue, we organized a series of AI Policy & Guidance Labs across six countries: Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, and Sweden.
In these collaborative sessions, we brought together experienced policy experts along with leaders from primary, secondary, and higher education to transform overarching visions into actionable strategies. By the conclusion of these gatherings, participants received formal Position Statements and a 12-month road map tailored to their specific contexts. Our approach involved working alongside external professionals to ensure that the strategies developed were applicable to any generative AI tool, free from bias toward particular products.
The AI Policy & Guidance Labs aimed to empower educators to harness AI as a transformative resource in addressing their unique challenges. The insights garnered from these sessions were invaluable for shaping our future support for the education sector.
Key Insights from Educators
Throughout the sessions, educators offered essential feedback that will help guide our future initiatives:
- Frameworks are a starting point: While establishing guidelines is important, significant advancements occur when education leaders engage in dialogue and collaborative problem-solving. - The importance of shared terminology: A major barrier in policy development is the disconnect between technical jargon and practical teaching methods. By creating a common language, participants moved beyond confusing "vendor-speak" to a strategic partnership, enabling administrators, IT professionals, and educators to tackle the same issues collectively. - The need for peer learning: Regardless of location, whether in Stockholm or Kuala Lumpur, educators expressed a strong desire for real-world examples. They were eager to learn how their peers around the globe were adapting to changes in technology while maintaining the essential human aspect of learning. In response to this need, Google for Education recently launched a Global Google Educator Group for primary and secondary teachers, along with Google Faculty Groups for university educators.
- AI should be a collaborative partner: Participants emphasized that the success of AI in education hinges on viewing it as a collaborator that enhances teaching practices rather than replacing human intuition. Our Google AI Educator Series has been developed with this goal in mind, offering resources to aid educators without undermining their professional judgment.
- Teachers must take the lead: It's clear that educators shouldn't merely monitor AI usage among students; they need to be proactive leaders in its implementation. Teachers must determine when and how to integrate AI tools into their classrooms, aligning their methods with institutional and national policies while addressing student needs. Additionally, they play a vital role in guiding students to understand AI’s capabilities and limitations, as well as promoting safe and effective usage, particularly in recognizing instances when AI should not be employed.
Planning for the Future
The insights from these pilot initiatives will inform the creation of a scalable, user-friendly model designed to support both K-12 and higher education systems worldwide. By partnering with educators at every level—from governmental ministries to individual classrooms—we aim to ensure a secure and equitable transition to a future enhanced by AI, grounded in the expertise of those who best understand their students.
