After a prolonged period during which investors largely avoided hardware, Silicon Valley is experiencing a resurgence in physical technology.

Robotics has emerged as one of the most promising sectors in the tech landscape, as investors seek new opportunities outside of traditional software avenues. According to data from PitchBook, physical AI startups—those developing systems capable of real-world interactions—secured an unprecedented $16.3 billion over 492 deals in the first quarter of 2026.

The decline in hardware costs, ongoing labor shortages, and the push for reshoring manufacturing have all contributed to the emergence of innovative companies focusing on physical applications.

In an effort to highlight the most exciting robotics startups, Business Insider solicited insights from 14 investors entrenched in the robotics venture capital space. These professionals ranged from early-stage investment specialists to partners at notable firms such as Bain Capital Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Bessemer Venture Partners. Each investor was invited to select two startups: one that they directly invest in and another that they have no financial ties to.

The selections reveal the expansive nature of the current robotics boom. Featured startups include those creating general-purpose AI platforms for robotics, such as FieldAI, Generalist, and Skild. Others are focused on developing humanoid robots for industrial and domestic environments, including companies like Unitree, Walden, and Sunday Robotics. Additionally, there are ventures that apply robotic solutions to specialized tasks, from metal fabrication to pharmaceutical innovation and agricultural harvesting. The lineup encompasses companies from the Y Combinator startup accelerator to firms gearing up for IPOs.

Despite its growth, the field of robotics remains in its infancy, with several technologies yet to prove their feasibility. Experts have previously remarked that humanoid robots are largely considered a "fantasy product" with limited near-term potential, while general-purpose home robots are projected to be years away from realization.
