Individuals are increasingly relinquishing a vital aspect of their autonomy to artificial intelligence: their decision-making capabilities.

On platforms like TikTok and Substack, many users share their experiences of relying heavily on AI tools for everyday choices, including meal selections, wardrobe decisions, message formulations for friends, and even navigating challenging personal relationships.

While this reliance may initially appear benign, experts warn it could lead to significant ramifications. The growing tendency to depend on AI for making decisions diminishes opportunities for people to practice their own decision-making skills, particularly in challenging situations.

This shift could erode vital cognitive and social abilities that typically develop through life experiences, uncertainty, and trial and error. In more alarming scenarios, some AI researchers believe this dependency could influence individuals' behaviors and even shape their fundamental beliefs.

"We often feel empowered by our AI tools, thinking they augment our capabilities," stated Cornelia C. Walther, a senior fellow at Wharton and a pro-social AI researcher. "However, the reality is that we are ceding more authority to these tools."

She cautioned, "We are perilously close to a state of dependency, which might soon transform into a full-blown addiction."

For instance, Carolyn Yoo, who previously spent nine years as a software engineer until mid-2024, experienced this phenomenon firsthand when contemplating her career transition.

For months, Yoo grappled with the decision to leave the tech industry, ultimately seeking guidance from Claude, an AI chatbot developed by Anthropic. She found herself dedicating two to three hours daily to discuss various scenarios for her future with the AI.

"I was constantly looking for validation from AI to confirm whether pursuing this path was wise," she explained. "Whenever someone caused me to doubt my choice, I would return to the chatbot for reassurance."

Similarly, others are leveraging AI technologies to address intricate relationship issues. In a Substack entry entitled "I’ve Outsourced My Judgment to AI. So Has Everyone Else," comedian and financial writer Dominic Frisby recounted his experience of analyzing his entire WhatsApp conversation with an ex for AI-generated insights.

"After grappling with a toxic relationship from which I couldn’t escape, I started to feel like I was losing my mind," he noted. The AI's interpretation ultimately offered him clarity and a pathway toward moving forward.

To meet the demand for assistance with indecision, some applications are quickly emerging, like Moot, which helps users navigate choices by allowing various AI personalities to debate options and vote on preferred solutions.

As reliance on AI grows, researchers have begun to express concerns about a trend they term "cognitive surrender." This refers to the diminishing critical thinking abilities of individuals as they increasingly depend on AI to make decisions.

Over time, this dependency might lead to discomfort with uncertainty and a reduction in practice evaluating contrasting options. Instead of trusting their instincts, people may lean on AI as an unquestioned authority.

John Nosta, founder of NostaLab, stated that a significant reliance on AI fosters "cognitive codependency," where individuals might see short-term productivity gains while simultaneously losing essential skills.

Vivienne Ming, a theoretical neuroscientist and founder of Socos Labs, warned against this trend, encapsulating it in the adage "use it or lose it." By frequently relying on AI for mental processing, individuals may become less engaged in the thinker’s mindset that enhances skills like memory and decision-making over time.

The ramifications could extend beyond mundane choices, potentially influencing people’s views on relationships, politics, and society at large. Researchers from the Wharton School have categorized this danger as "cognitive surrender," wherein users cease to view AI as a tool and begin to regard it as a source of authoritative answers, forgoing personal evaluation of those answers.

Steven Shaw, a postdoctoral researcher from Wharton, emphasized the risk of individuals becoming "passive followers of unreflected thoughts," readily adopting AI-generated ideas without meaningful contemplation.

The allure of AI in decision-making can be hard to resist. AI provides instant responses without fatigue, impatience, or discomfort, making it an appealing substitute for human interaction.

Joanna Stern, NBC’s chief technology analyst, reflected on her experience using AI throughout her work and personal life over the past year, noting the unsettling nature of relationships forged with technology.

"Even people who seem well-adjusted can find themselves deeply absorbed in these interactions," she remarked in a conversation with journalist Kara Swisher.

However, reliance on an accommodating AI companion might not be beneficial for long-term interpersonal skills.

"When AI systems are designed to appease, they undermine the feedback systems critical to successfully navigating social dynamics," said Anat Perry, a fellow at Harvard University.

Yoo ultimately found that stepping back from AI was essential in learning to embrace uncertainty rather than seeking immediate answers. She started using notebooks, meditation, writing groups, and conversations with friends to foster her decision-making process.

"The key is to sit with our uncertainties and arrive at our own decisions," she maintained. "Only then can we truly validate the integrity of our choices."

Even so, some users assert that delegating decision-making tasks to AI can lead to improved choices and help them avoid regret. Frisby encapsulated this sentiment on Substack, stating, "I’ve had my fair share of poor decisions. Now, at 56, I aim to make optimal choices to enhance my future."
