In a bold initiative, a group of 98 teenagers from across the United States gathered in a simulation of the U.S. Senate chamber in Boston over a busy weekend in July. Their mission? To create impactful legislation aimed at guiding K-12 schools through the complexities introduced by artificial intelligence (AI).
With adult lawmakers often struggling to establish a coherent national policy regarding the use of AI in education, these high school juniors and seniors took on the challenge head-on. They deliberated key issues, such as whether students should be permitted to use AI for assignments or tests and the role schools should play in educating children about AI.
Gabriel Sutphin, a student from South Carolina, emphasized the significance of their efforts, stating that it was a unique chance to influence positive change. He and his peers expressed their concern that adult leaders had been slow to safeguard students against the pitfalls of technology, referencing past missteps with social media.
The students were selected by educational leaders and supported by various organizations, including the Edward M. Kennedy Institute and AASA, The School Superintendents Association. Throughout the weekend, their proposed bill encountered challenges, but ultimately, their collaborative spirit and negotiation skills led to its successful passage.
Bena Mejia Romero from Connecticut framed the bill as a pivotal opportunity for students to take a direct role in shaping their educational landscape. The resulting Students First Act was approved with a strong majority of 82 votes in favor and only 16 against.
