Researchers examined the impact of AI on employment, finding that for young workers aged 22 to 25, jobs classified as heavily influenced by AI saw an approximate 11 percent decline in jobs since 2022. In contrast, positions considered minimally impacted by AI experienced a 10 percent growth in employment for this demographic during the same timeframe.

The analysis conducted by Brynjolfsson and colleagues indicates that while the overall economic effects of AI on employment appear muted, there is a widening gap specifically for entry-level positions between job sectors with significant AI influence and those without. In these AI-heavy fields, the primary issue seems to stem from diminished hiring rates rather than an uptick in layoffs or job resignations. This trend suggests that for younger workers, the effects of AI are reflected more in decreased job availability rather than lowered wages.

Furthermore, the researchers highlighted that not all jobs facing potential AI transformation are equally affected. Through their Economic Index, Anthropic classifies tasks into two categories: "automative," which fully replace human labor, and "augmentative," which enhance human capabilities in their work. Jobs such as accounting and reception have been identified as more vulnerable to automation, while roles like chief executives and registered nurses frequently employ AI to support human efforts rather than replace them.

The study emphasizes that fields susceptible to AI automation showcase the most significant drops in employment for entry-level roles. The findings indicate a trend where automation-focused applications of AI are displacing human labor, while roles that utilize AI to complement human work tend to maintain stable or even increasing employment figures.
