In a significant move on Tuesday, SpaceX officially announced its intention to acquire the artificial intelligence firm Cursor for $60 billion in stock, a deal that has generated considerable excitement.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of SpaceX's record-breaking debut on the Nasdaq, which marked the largest initial public offering (IPO) in history.

Since its inception in 2022, Cursor has developed an acclaimed AI-powered coding tool designed to support software developers in generating, modifying, and reviewing code, quickly becoming a standout player in the field. Notably, in November, Cursor reported surpassing $1 billion in annualized revenue. The company also secured the 37th spot on CNBC's prestigious Disruptor 50 list in 2026.

The acquisition deal, involving $60 billion in Class A common stock, represents a 3.4% dilution based on SpaceX's IPO valuation. Following the announcement, SpaceX's shares surged by approximately 16%, elevating the company’s market capitalization above that of industry giants Amazon and Microsoft, positioning it as the fourth highest-valued company in the United States.

Earlier this year, Musk combined SpaceX with his AI venture, xAI, and the integration of Cursor is expected to bolster SpaceX’s capacity to contend with competitors such as Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which provide popular coding solutions.

Despite the excitement, SpaceX has not disclosed specific information regarding Cursor’s customer base, growth trajectory, or revenue details. Market data from Ramp indicates that Cursor's share in the market dipped from 41% in June 2025 to approximately 26% as of May, with Anthropic now commanding half of that segment.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, SpaceX anticipates that the acquisition will be finalized in the third quarter of this year, pending the usual regulatory approvals.
