Days after SpaceX’s massive initial public offering, which made CEO Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire, the company announced Tuesday it was purchasing Bay Area artificial intelligence startup Cursor for $60 billion.

The move has been anticipated since April, when the companies announced a deal that SpaceX would either pay Cursor $10 billion for “coding or knowledge work AI,” or purchase it later this year. That same month, Business Insider reported SpaceX was renting out massive computing space in Colossus, its Memphis, Tennessee, data center, and two senior Cursor employees left the startup to work directly for Musk on SpaceX’s coding product.

Tuesday’s deal is part of an effort to boost Musk’s AI company, xAI, which has fallen behind key competitors following multiple controversies and an exodus of the coding company’s co-founders in March.

“We look forward to working closely with the SpaceX team to advance our frontier AI capabilities and continue to work closely with our customers and partners,” said Cursor CEO Michael Truell in a statement.

Founded in 2022 by Truell and fellow Massachusetts Institute of Technology dropouts Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif and Arvid Lunnemark, Cursor has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the tech industry as a leader in AI coding assistants in the past four years.

In 2025, the company brought in more than $1 billion in revenue, and its valuation spiked from $2.5 billion to nearly $30 billion by the end of the year. But in a booming and fast-changing sector, the company faces stiff competition from Anthropic and OpenAI: Fortune reported earlier this year that products from AI’s biggest companies can generate code, rather than assist an engineer in writing code faster.

Specifically, Discovery Loop wants to build systems that can tackle parts of the 14 challenges laid out by some of the world's most accomplished scientists and engineers to improve life as we know it. Formerly known as the "National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges," the 14 topics range from "Reverse Engineer the Brain" to "Prevent Nuclear Terror."

Interestingly, the 2008 committee that came up with the grand challenges included Larry Page, the cofounder of Google.

In a sign of how he left things at Google, Alphabet is a founding investor and cloud partner, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said.

If you've used Google in the last two decades, you have Jeff Dean to thank. As Google's 30th employee, his tenure spans from establishing Google's dominance in search to the creation of generative AI models.

Dean helped advance Google Search, Google News, Google Translate, and Google Ads.

Sanjay Ghemawat: Ghemawat is one of Dean's oldest collaborators, going back to before the pair joined Google when they worked at Digital Equipment Corporation.

At Google, the pair became so inseparable that Dean's kids called Ghemawat "Uncle Sanjay," according to a 2018 profile in The New Yorker. Ghemawat and Dean also became the first-ever level 11 Google engineers, carrying the title of Senior Fellows.

According to Dean's slide deck, he is the most-cited distributed systems researcher; Ghemawat is the fourth most cited.

Oriol Vinyals: Vinyals, a principal scientist at Google DeepMind, is also joining Discovery Loop.

According to his Google biography, Vinyals focused on machine learning and reinforcement learning. Before joining the team, he worked on projects that fuel tools like Google Translate.

One of his research projects, called AlphaStar, was an agent that bested a top-tier professional StarCraft II player.

Among the most-cited AI researchers, per Dean's slide deck, Vinyals is sixth.

Quoc Le: Le was a founding member of the Google Brain team. At Stanford, his advisor was Andrew Ng, who helped establish the Brain team.

Le worked on one of Google Brain's first big projects: developing a neural network of 1,000 machines containing 16,000 processors that demonstrated machine learning by teaching itself how to recognize items after being trained on 10 million images randomly pulled from YouTube videos, as The New York Times reported in 2012.

This being the internet, the system taught itself to recognize cats.

Google is no stranger to big shake-ups, including in AI.

In 2014, the search giant acquired DeepMind, then a startup. Under Google's banner, DeepMind conducted influential research, including AlphaGo, a program capable of beating a master at the challenging board game Go.

Despite laying the foundation for several AI breakthroughs, Google saw some of its former employees, including Sutskever, push OpenAI to the front of the generative AI race with the release of ChatGPT in 2022.

In 2023, Google merged the Brain and DeepMind teams into one group led by Demis Hassabis.

Google on Wednesday revealed an overhaul of its AI leadership, as its chief scientist for nearly three decades exits – the latest in a string of high-profile departures to plague the tech giant in its struggle to pull ahead in the artificial intelligence race.

Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google DeepMind, will become the company’s chairman and chief scientist, while Google DeepMind’s technology chief, Koray Kavukcuoglu, will lead work on Google’s new Gemini 4 model, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced in a post on X.

Pichai said Dean is leaving the company on good terms, congratulating him for “an incredible 27-year run.” Google’s owner, Alphabet, will invest in Discovery Loop and provide the startup with cloud and computing capacity, Pichai added.

It’s just the latest exit from Google’s tech leadership as the Silicon Valley giant attempts to convince investors that its massive investments in AI will pay off – especially as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude models remain firmly in the lead for the top chatbots.

Noam Shazeer, a longtime Google computer scientist and leading AI researcher, recently left the company for rival OpenAI, while John Jumper, who won a Nobel Prize for his work on an AlphaFold AI model, jumped ship to Anthropic.

Meanwhile, Google reported that it turned cash flow negative for the first time in the most recent quarter while forecasting full-year capex of as much as $205 billion – even as it failed to share an update on the release of its newest Gemini 3.5 Pro model.

Shares of Alphabet fell 4.2% Wednesday as investors fear the legacy tech company is losing steam in the AI race.

Jeff Dean, one of the longest-serving and most influential executives at Google, is stepping down from the search giant to launch his own AI startup.

Coming with him as co-founders are several other top researchers at the company, including Sanjay Ghemawat, a top engineer and senior fellow at Google; Quoc Le, a key AI researcher and founding member of Google Brain; and Oriol Vinyals, a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind. Dean reportedly plans to serve as CEO.

Together, the group is starting Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation that seeks to use AI to turbo-charge scientific research.

Discovery Loop says it plans to use high-octane algorithms to initiate and iterate thousands of experiments simultaneously, with the goal of partially automating the research process and expanding the scale at which experimentation can be conducted.

The startup is also interested in using AI to help create more powerful AI (a process known as recursive self-improvement), which would cut human iteration out of the loop entirely.

“While science and engineering have tremendously advanced society over past centuries, progress has traditionally relied on slow, sequential human iterations, creating a significant bottleneck,” the company said in a press release. “Discovery Loop is developing advanced AI systems that leverage massive computational scale to fundamentally transform the speed and efficiency of innovation by automating complete experimental loops.”

Using AI to accelerate scientific discovery has been a key interest of the science and tech communities for many years, but until recently, it remained a largely experimental field with limited commercial application.

The company has received financial support from a number of different sources, including Google’s parent company Alphabet. The initial funding round is being co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, the company announced Wednesday. Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, and Doerr Capital also participated.

“The next great frontier for AI is to go beyond answering questions and to begin making discoveries,” the founding team said in a joint statement. “By fundamentally accelerating how engineering and scientific discovery are conducted, we can deliver the benefits of transformative technologies to the world far sooner.”

Dean has worked at Google since 1999 and was Google’s 30th employee. Over the years, he has contributed to Google search’s core infrastructure, including its crawling and indexing system and its query-serving system. He has also had a significant impact on Google Gemini’s multimodal models and played a leading role in the company’s early AI research.

“We think there is opportunity for AI to more fully automate what has traditionally been a very human-intensive experimental loop,” Dean told the New York Times. “You will get both a higher quantity and a higher quality of experiments, and that will lead to scientific breakthroughs and advances.”

He was quickly joined by his three collaborators, who not only share a professional history but also friendship, often vacationing together. “Though we were each working on different projects, we began to recognize how AI could potentially automate scientific and engineering processes,” he recalled.

The team's initial plan outlines that Discovery Loop will serve as its own first client, with the autonomous experimentation loops being used to refine the company’s advanced machine learning algorithms. Worse, the other cofounders are also supernovas in the AI firmament: Oriol Vinyals, VP of research at DeepMind and a technical lead for Gemini, and Quoc Le, a cofounder of Google Brain and the key scientist behind Google’s AutoML-Zero, a project that uses machine learning algorithms to autonomously build AI products.

Google wants its AI to get better at coding. It might have found a shortcut.

The tech giant has been in discussions with San Francisco startup Mechanize in recent weeks for a potential deal that would involve Google hiring some of Mechanize's talent, four people familiar with the conversations said.

The deal, which some of the people said is worth over $1.5 billion, is in progress, and details could change. Google is discussing a non-exclusive licensing agreement for Mechanize's technology as part of the deal, one person familiar with the matter said. The talent Google could acquire from Mechanize would work on model evaluation and development, the person added.

The talks highlight two realities of the AI boom. Coding has become one of the most important — and lucrative — applications of AI, and Big Tech companies are getting creative about how they acquire the talent and technology they need to stay competitive.

It wouldn't be the first time Google has done a workaround deal for talent and technology. In the past couple of years, Google has structured acquisitions as hybrid transactions that include bringing in talent via acquihires and gathering technology through licensing and other methods. Companies sometimes take this approach to avoid the antitrust scrutiny of full acquisitions.

Last year, Google swept in to acquire Windsurf's talent and licensed its tech after OpenAI tried to buy it. Windsurf's CEO, Varun Mohan, now leads Google's Antigravity, an agentic coding platform. In 2024, the search giant rehired Character AI cofounder Noam Shazeer and paid for non-exclusive rights to use the startup's AI technology (Shazeer recently left the company to join OpenAI).

Google declined to comment over email. Mechanize declined to comment.

Mechanize launched last year with a mission of automating every job and a star-studded group of investors, including former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, and podcaster Dwarkesh Patel.

The startup said earlier this year that it raised $9.1 million in a funding round at a $500 million valuation. Mechanize's CEO, Tamay Besiroglu, previously cofounded Epoch AI, which also focused on testing AI models.

Mechanize's tech can help tech companies improve the performance of their AI models at coding — something Google has struggled with, while OpenAI and Anthropic have scooped up developer customers with Codex and Claude Code.

Mechanize has wider ambitions than coding. "Our current focus is software engineering, but our long-term goal is the full automation of valuable work across the economy," its website reads.

These companies, collectively valued at tens of billions and generating substantial profits by supplying training data to organizations such as OpenAI and Anthropic, are accustomed to navigating the demands of the often unpredictable AI labs.

However, they discovered another potential market thriving on their doorstep: China’s rapidly advancing AI sector.

Several Chinese firms have laid out their acquisition needs. Tencent, a corporation identified by the U.S. as having ties to the military—an assertion they contest—distributed a comprehensive request for training data that includes areas such as finance and cybersecurity, as well as ambitious objectives like developing AI systems that can enhance their own learning processes.

While the U.S. has long restricted China's access to the advanced chips that drive premier AI models, it has not imposed similar limitations on the data necessary for training these systems. This expertly curated human knowledge, developed through specialized networks and shaped by detailed task specifications, serves as the backbone of the data infrastructure that trains models to handle sophisticated tasks, such as financial analysis and software development. This lucrative industry represents hundreds of millions of dollars each year and is contributing to the relentless pursuit of technological parity between Chinese and American AI models.

Nathan Lambert, previously a research scientist at the Allen Institute for AI, stated, “After the compute needed to train the models, quality data is paramount. As we aim for models to tackle new and more complex areas, securing high-quality data becomes the most impactful factor in making a model effective.”

Forbes has reviewed communications indicating a burgeoning trade worth several hundred million dollars in training datasets between American data firms and China's foremost AI laboratories. The same startups servicing OpenAI and Anthropic are also supporting top Chinese labs, effectively putting Silicon Valley in a position where it is fueling both sides of the evolving AI rivalry.

In the quest to match American AI capabilities, Chinese labs can pursue three main strategies: recruiting top talent from the U.S., distilling insights from outputs generated by systems like ChatGPT or Claude (which technically contradicts their terms of service), and more straightforwardly, acquiring the same training data from the same suppliers as American labs.

Training an AI to master intricate tasks, such as complex accounting or experimental protocols, goes beyond mere data collection. The real advantage lies in the design of the data itself, including which data types to emphasize and the sophisticated criteria crafted by experts to guide the model’s learning process. By purchasing these proprietary datasets, Chinese labs efficiently acquire the extensive expertise that fuels Silicon Valley’s advanced models.

Sean Cai, an AI data consultant and blogger, summed up the situation: “Analyzing the data landscape in China and the overall supply chain reveals that a considerable amount of U.S. data facilitating advancements in the U.S. is also being sold to Chinese labs.”

The shadowy data supply chain in China

This trade network channels directly from American data-labelling companies to leading Chinese technology giants like Tencent. In one correspondence reviewed by Forbes, a Tencent data procurement officer mentioned that they partner with Surge AI, which has provided data to the likes of the U.S. Army and Air Force. Additionally, Mercor—recently awarded a contract with the U.S. federal government—also collaborates with Tencent.

Further correspondence exhibits a similar pattern. Executives from Ant Group, the tech and finance entity behind Alipay, acknowledged a strong partnership with AfterQuery, a U.S. AI training data firm. Conversations with representatives from Alibaba—China’s e-commerce powerhouse—pointed to established contracts with both AfterQuery and Mercor. There’s also evidence that Turing, another data labeling startup from the U.S., has done business with ByteDance, TikTok's parent company.

None of the Chinese companies, including ByteDance, Alibaba, Tencent, or Ant Group, responded to requests for comments. Mercor chose not to provide feedback, but AfterQuery and Surge both maintain they do not disclose customer information. Turing mentioned in a statement: “We are at the forefront of AI development, encompassing both proprietary and open-source models. We anticipate growth in both sectors, with some of today's leading open-source models emerging from non-U.S. labs.”

Collectively, the leading six Chinese AI labs are estimated to spend around $500 million annually on American data labeling services, as reported by two entrepreneurs in the sector citing insights from Tencent and ByteDance executives. Observations from industry insiders indicate that these laboratories see themselves not as direct competitors but as a collective seeking high-quality Western datasets.

American data labeling firms appear willing to sell to this market. Reports suggest that Mercor’s revenue from Chinese labs accounted for about 2% of its total income (with annual revenue surpassing $2 billion by June). At the same time, a significant chunk of AfterQuery's revenue, at least $50 million, arises from Chinese AI companies. Surge AI has been proactive in approaching these clients, with CEO Edwin Chen even visiting China to forge relationships.

Data providers offer bespoke, tailored projects to Chinese AI labs, along with what are termed "off-the-shelf" (OTS) datasets. These pre-packaged training sets are designed for resale to various labs. While this might seem harmless, off-the-shelf datasets are quite powerful; they are developed using robust "knowledge pipelines" created during custom engagements with firms like OpenAI or Anthropic. Consequently, Chinese companies that purchase these datasets gain access to the expertise, rigorous quality checks, and evaluation criteria that have contributed to the training programs of major U.S. AI labs, drastically reducing their developmental timeline.

Cai emphasized the significance of off-the-shelf datasets: “The structure of this data frequently originates from the same vendors who shaped initial scaling strategies for firms like Anthropic,” he noted. “It’s incredibly straightforward for a vendor that has worked with Anthropic to generate similar datasets for a Chinese lab.”

The lucrative nature of off-the-shelf datasets—due to their ability to be resold to multiple clients—generates notable profit margins. Chinese AI labs distinctly express to American data suppliers their desire to procure all data that U.S. labs have already acquired, according to an executive familiar with interactions with these labs.

Max Gazor, founder of Striker VC, which has invested in numerous American AI ventures, acknowledged the ethical complexities surrounding this marketplace. “It's fundamentally an ethical choice regarding whether a company should sell data to Chinese AI outfits,” he remarked.

The regulatory grey area

The U.S. has devoted considerable effort to building barriers around advanced semiconductor technology. However, the vital human expertise required for training AI continues to flow across borders with little oversight.

This situation has bolstered the growth of Silicon Valley’s data companies, many of which are now valued in the billions. Mercor, founded in 2020, is aiming for a valuation near $20 billion, while Surge AI is estimated to exceed $25 billion. Additionally, AfterQuery has seen its revenue soar from $100 million to hundreds of millions in just a few months. Although most of their earnings still come from established U.S. businesses, the appeal of international sales as a lucrative revenue source is undeniable.

There are concerns among some commentators that selling datasets to Chinese firms poses risks to national security. “Some data firms are collaborating with foreign adversaries, and the repercussions are evident,” noted Ali Ansari, CEO of Micro1. “It’s hypocritical to assert American AI leadership while selling millions worth of data to nations we consider adversaries.” 

Micro1 asserts that it refrains from selling data internationally, whereas Scale AI had previously explored a contract with ByteDance but withdrew in 2024 due to security apprehensions.

Conversely, proponents of data sales argue that restricting these transactions could stifle international open-source innovation.

“Effectively limiting data exports or AI transfers could damage American open-source efforts,” Cai pointed out. “Such actions would potentially give an unfair advantage to OpenAI and Anthropic, which comes with its own set of challenges.”

American Startups Are Enhancing China's AI Capabilities

When U.S. sales teams from Silicon Valley’s big data-labeling startups visited this year’s International Conference on Machine Learning in Seoul, Korea, they arrived prepped to court the industry’s big spenders. The data companies—collectively worth tens of billions of dollars and generating billions in annual revenue supplying training data to customers like OpenAI and Anthropic—are used to chasing AI labs that are notoriously demanding, fickle and difficult to satisfy.

They found another eager customer waiting for them: China’s AI industry.

Some Chinese companies have shopping lists. Tencent—which has previously been designated by the U.S. government as associated with the Chinese military, a characterization the company disputes— circulated with prospective vendors a detailed request for training data spanning finance, cybersecurity and one of AI’s most coveted research goals: AI systems capable of improving themselves.

While the U.S. has long prohibited China from buying the chips that power America’s top-tier AI models, it hasn’t taken the same precautions with the data required to train them. This packaged human expertise, produced by specialist networks and shaped by task designs, grading rubrics and quality controls, is part of the expensive data infrastructure that teaches models to handle difficult professional tasks like financial modeling and coding. The business is worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually and it’s helping Chinese AI models close the gap with their American rivals.

“After the compute needed to train the models, good quality data is the most important thing,” Nathan Lambert, a former research scientist at the Allen Institute for AI, told Forbes. “As we try to get models to move to new, more challenging domains, getting good data is the highest-leverage item that can make the model become viable. “

Documentation and communications from buyers at Chinese AI labs and employees from top Silicon Valley data platforms such as Surge AI and Mercor reviewed by Forbes reveal a quiet multi-hundred-million-dollar trade in training datasets. The same U.S. startups serving as suppliers to OpenAI, Anthropic, and, in some cases, U.S. federal entities, are also supplying Beijing’s top labs. Increasingly, Silicon Valley is training both sides of the AI arms race.

For Chinese AI labs chasing American AI performance, there are really only three fast-track moves. The first is to poach researchers. The second is distillation, harvesting outputs from ChatGPT or Claude and using them to train Chinese models. While not illegal, the practice explicitly violates OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s Terms of Service and recently was flagged by the Trump administration’s science and technology advisor Michael Kratsios. A third is easier and comes without potential regulatory headaches: buy the same training data the American AI labs are buying from the same data vendors they are buying it from.

Teaching an AI model to handle complex accounting or web lab protocols isn’t just about collecting the raw work output. The true secret sauce sits inside the data specifications: what type of data to focus on, as well as intricate rubrics written by human professionals that push and prod the model into learning to navigate white-collar work. By purchasing these datasets, the Chinese labs efficiently buy the hard-won, proprietary judgement powering Silicon Valley’s best models.

AI data consultant Sean Cai, who publishes an eponymous data and reinforcement learning blog, puts it bluntly: “If you actually study the shape of the data industry in China and then the entire data supply chain in general, you’ll realize that yes, a lot of the same U.S. data that powers U.S. model advancement is getting sold to Chinese labs as well.”

The $500 million secret data supply chain in China

The pipeline runs straight from the American data labeling companies to China’s biggest tech giants, including firms like Tencent, the Chinese company flagged by the Pentagon. In one message seen by Forbes, a Tencent data procurement executive noted that the company relies on Surge AI–whose customers have included the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force and Anthropic– for data provision. Mercor, which late last month told its employees it had won a contract with the U.S. federal government, also works with Tencent.

Other communications reviewed by Forbes show a similar overlap. In text exchanges, an executive from Ant Group, the Chinese tech and finance company behind Alipay, acknowledged a close working relationship with U.S. AI training data outfit AfterQuery. Audio transcripts from conversations with a Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba employee point to purchase agreements with AfterQuery and Mercor. Internal project documentation suggests US data labeling startup Turing has worked with ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent.

ByteDance, Alibaba, Moonshot, Tencent and Ant Group didn’t respond to requests for comment; Mercor declined to comment. AfterQuery and Surge said they don’t disclose customer information. In a statement, Turing said: “We power the frontier of AI, which includes both proprietary and open source models. We believe both will keep growing, and some of the strongest open source models today come from labs outside the U.S.”

All in all, the top six Chinese AI labs spend about $500 million with American data labeling companies per year, according to two data labeling entrepreneurs who have received market size estimates from Tencent and ByteDance executives. According to one person who has interacted with a variety of them, Chinese AI labs don’t view themselves as being in direct procurement competition with each other; rather they see themselves as a collective buyer pool looking for top-tier Western datasets.

U.S. data labeling companies are happy to sell to them. According to a source familiar with the matter, Mercor’s Q2 revenue from Chinese AI labs was 2% of total revenue (Mercor’s annualized revenue crossed $2 billion in June), and the company has hired a specific engagement manager for China. A larger portion of AfterQuery’s business, at least $50 million in recurring revenue, comes from Chinese AI labs, sources told Forbes. And Surge AI, an early pioneer in the region, has actively courted these buyers, with CEO Edwin Chen traveling to China to meet lab executives directly.

Data labelers sell Chinese AI labs custom, one-off projects as well as what are known as "Off-the-Shelf" (OTS) datasets: standardized, pre-packaged training sets that are meant to be resold to multiple labs. Sounds harmless enough, but off-the-shelf datasets are far from innocuous. They are manufactured with the same "knowledge pipelines" developed during custom engagements for OpenAI or Anthropic. That means the Chinese companies that buy them benefit from the same PhD expert networks, quality control algorithms, and post-training rubrics that help inform the training done at the big U.S. AI labs. And that is enormously helpful. In many cases, Chinese labs can bypass months of trial-and-error by buying OTS datasets with battle-tested reasoning structures.

"You've got to realize the shapes of this data sometimes come from the same companies that tailored their initial scaling directions for Anthropic," Cai, the AI data consultant, explained. "It is extremely easy for a data vendor that has served Anthropic to use the same stack to produce data for a Chinese lab."

This makes off-the-shelf datasets a tempting financial engine for data vendors. Because they can be resold to multiple AI labs, they carry the highest profit margins. And Chinese AI labs explicitly tell U.S. data labelers that they want to buy all the data that the U.S. labs have already purchased, said one executive who has spoken to Chinese AI labs.

Max Gazor, founder of Striker VC, which has invested in many of the American AI model builders, acknowledged this market reality comes with certain complicating factors. “I would distinguish it as more of an ethical decision of whether the company would sell the data to Chinese AI companies,” he said.

Regulatory Wild West

Washington has spent years building a geopolitical fortress around advanced chips. But the human expertise used to train AI manages to cross borders with almost no scrutiny at all.

Founded in 2020 and 2023, Mercor is currently eyeing a valuation of $20 billion, while Surge AI is reportedly worth at least $25 billion. Meanwhile, relative newcomer AfterQuery has grown from $100 million to hundreds of millions in annual recurring revenue in three months. While the vast majority of it still comes from established American giants, foreign sales are likely an irresistible secondary revenue stream.

Some say selling datasets to China is a matter of national security. “Some human data companies work with foreign adversaries. and the results show today in Kimi K3,” Ali Ansari, the company’s 25-year-old CEO, recently posted to X. ”We believe it’s shameful to claim American AI dominance desires while selling millions worth of data to countries that we are in adversarial competition with.” Micro1 says it does not sell data outside the U.S. Scale AI also flirted with a ByteDance contract before scrapping it in 2024 over national security concerns.

Defenders of the practice argue clamping down on data sales would choke off global open-source innovation.

“One cannot easily restrict exports of data or AI in a way that does not materially hurt American open source,” said Cai, noting that he does not have a position on the issue. “It gives an unfair duopoly to OpenAI and Anthropic, and that has its own problems.”

Google's departing chief scientist shared slides for his new AI startup, Discovery Loop, on X on Wednesday — and they include a list of achievements any founder would be envious of.

Dean is leaving Google after 27 years, as part of a wider AI leadership reshuffle that also saw Demis Hassabis move from CEO of Google DeepMind to become Alphabet's chief scientist and chair of Google DeepMind.

Dean was one of Google's earliest employees and has a legendary status inside and outside the company. Google staff reacted on internal message boards with fond memes, Business Insider's Hugh Langley reported.

The internet responded in a similar fashion to Dean's pitch deck slides.

"Will go down in history as one of the most stacked pitch decks ever made," Bilawal Sidhu, a former Google product leader, wrote in an X post on Wednesday.

"VCs don't select Jeff Dean. Jeff Dean selects VC," Shubham Sharma, a technical lead at YouTube, wrote in a reply to Dean's X post.

"Your deck should have just had one slide that said google me," James Rizkallah, a product data science manager at the financial technology platform Ramp, wrote in a Wednesday X post.

A separate slide shared by Dean is another huge flex.

It says the founders' teams managed or worked with people who went on to lead some of the most important AI companies: Anthropic cofounder Dario Amodei, OpenAI and Safe Superintelligence cofounder Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI cofounder Wojciech Zaremba, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas, and Mistral cofounder Arthur Mensch, among others.

A third slide drives home the Discovery Loop founders' academic credentials, displaying Google Scholar rankings that place Dean, Le, and Vinyals among some of the most highly cited AI researchers.

Anthropic has been on a cloud partnership spree in recent months, and its latest move is reportedly a $10 billion deal with AI cloud startup Volta.

Bloomberg originally reported that Volta, founded earlier this year, will provide cloud compute to the Claude maker over a six-year period.

Volta has a partner in this deal, Bitdeer, a crypto-mining company that will help develop the data center to provide the compute capacity. That facility will be located in Norway and will deliver a 133 megawatt capacity. It will be fueled by Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems, the chipmaker’s state-of-the-art AI chip architecture.

Volta is part of Nvidia’s Cloud Partner program, which is a consortium of AI cloud providers that use Nvidia’s GPUs in their data centers.

Volta had spoken about a deal with an AI lab but hadn’t named the specific company it was working with. Bloomberg originally cited anonymous sources familiar with the deal. TechCrunch reached out to Anthropic for more information.

Anthropic has sought to aggressively expand its compute capacity over the last several months as it wages a corporate battle with its competitors. The company also recently announced new compute deals with the likes of SpaceX and Amazon.

With the rapid rise in AI-driven cyberattacks, many organizations are urgently seeking to rigorously assess their defenses, filling a critical gap largely overlooked by traditional security providers.

According to Matt Hartley, the firm’s Chief Revenue Officer, Horizon3's NodeZero platform boasts two primary advantages: it can assess live systems without halting operations—a challenge that many AI-driven tools face—and it offers continuous infrastructure scanning rather than the typical annual assessments, inspecting the entire network rather than just a small fraction.

Last year, the company neared $100 million in annual recurring revenue, achieving 120% year-over-year growth, and Hartley anticipates even greater expansion in the current year.

The rise of AI tools has enabled cybercriminals to create new exploits with ease, compelling security teams to respond to threats faster than they can neutralize them. Horizon3 has invested approximately $100 million in research and development to automate systems that are designed to remain predictable and manageable. This investment takes on added significance in light of recent breaches at AI labs, which have raised concerns about the containment of AI systems.

“It’s also prompting organizations to be more cautious about AI deployment,” Hartley noted. “We’re receiving numerous inquiries about our ability to detect AI. We can definitely do that. However, many companies that hurriedly integrated AI into their operations are now reconsidering the potential consequences. If my security team becomes overly aggressive, could that lead to unforeseen issues? Consequently, many organizations are entering a transformative phase, emphasizing the need for consistent, reliable testing from a company like Horizon3 to enhance their defenses against real-world threats.”

Horizon3 has conducted 310,000 security tests in operational environments without any disruptions, establishing a framework it refers to as ‘AI Hackers’—fully autonomous penetration testing methods.

According to Hartley, the true competition isn't other software firms but rather the traditional approach to security testing. Most organizations still engage human security firms for annual evaluations, which are unlikely to vanish entirely. However, the demand from clients is shifting; instead of testing a mere 5% of their infrastructure annually, they now seek comprehensive scans on a monthly or weekly basis to monitor their security improvements.

The founders of Horizon3, Snehal Antani and Anthony Pelletier, met while serving at the Joint Special Operations Command, where they witnessed firsthand how limited resources hindered continuous security assessments. Their goal in founding Horizon3 was to automate these repetitive evaluations.

With the new funding, Horizon3 plans to broaden its international footprint, including opening offices in Amsterdam (scheduled for June 2026), Australia, and Singapore, while also developing a partner ecosystem and maintaining significant research and development investments.

New strategic backers include Singapore’s EDBI, defense contractor SAIC, and Qualcomm, indicating that the vulnerabilities Horizon3 addresses are relevant across various sectors.

Horizon3 currently services between 7,200 and 7,300 clients, ranging from managed service providers catering to small businesses to Fortune 10 corporations. The company asserts that its market potential is in the tens of billions, in alignment with broader industry estimates that place the cybersecurity market at $271.9 billion by 2025, with projections reaching $663.2 billion by 2033, as noted by Grand View Research.

Cybersecurity startup Horizon3 has raised a $250 million Series E at a $2 billion valuation, more than tripling its valuation in 14 months. The San Francisco-based firm drew backing from returning investors NightDragon and NEA.

The funding arrives as two major AI research labs disclosed last week that their models had breached systems outside their intended scope. Horizon3, which has spent six years building AI specifically designed to probe networks for vulnerabilities in a controlled, authorized manner, is riding growing enterprise demand. With AI-driven attacks accelerating, enterprises are rushing to stress-test their defenses at scale, a gap that traditional security vendors have largely left unfilled.

Matt Hartley, the company’s chief revenue officer, said that its NodeZero platform has two core strengths: It can test live systems without shutting down operations, a capability other AI-powered tools have struggled to deliver reliably, and it scans an entire infrastructure continuously rather than once a year, examining the full network rather than just 2-3%.

The company approached $100 million in annual recurring revenue last year with 120% year-over-year growth,and expects to accelerate growth this year, Hartley said.

AI tools have made it easier for attackers to develop new exploits quickly, forcing security teams to handle threats faster than they can fix them. Horizon3 spent roughly $100 million in R&D building automated systems designed to stay predictable and controllable, Hartley said. That’s significant given recent breaches at AI labs, which raised questions about whether any AI system can truly remain contained.

“It’s also making people a lot more careful about how they deploy AI,” Hartley said. “We’re getting a lot of questions today around: can you detect AI? Of course we can. But I think a lot of organizations that rushed to deploy AI across the enterprise are now thinking twice about the ramifications of those deployments; what if my own security team gets too aggressive, could there be unintended consequences? So a lot of organizations are moving into what I’d call a bold new world, which is exactly why you need consistent, predictable testing from a company like Horizon3, to know how to strengthen your own defenses against real-world exploits.”

In a statement, Horizon3 has run 310,000 production security tests with zero disruptions, establishing what it calls ‘AI Hackers’, fully autonomous penetration testing.

The real competition isn’t other software vendors; it’s the existing model, according to Hartley. Most companies hire human security firms to run annual tests and those won’t disappear, he continued. What’s shifting is what clients demand after signing up: Instead of sampling 5% of infrastructure once yearly, they now want to scan everything monthly or weekly, tracking whether they’re actually getting safer.

Clarity specializes in identity verification, deepfake detection, and fraud prevention, providing essential tools for organizations to ensure that potential hires are indeed who they profess to be. This technology is increasingly crucial in combating security risks associated with AI-generated identities, as it protects businesses from malicious actors who may manipulate faces, voices, and documents or even engage in real-time deepfake video interviews to secure unauthorized access to sensitive systems.

Beyond its commercial use, Clarity’s solutions have been employed by Israeli security agencies and government departments since October 7 to authenticate critical videos and documents.

Founded in 2022, Clarity has successfully raised $16 million from a range of investors, including Walden Catalyst Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Fusion, Secret Chord Ventures, Ascend Ventures, and Flying Fish Partners.

With the acquisition, Clarity’s AI technology and engineering talent will integrate into Deel’s operations, enhancing the company’s efforts to incorporate advanced identity and security features into its services.

Deel, which serves over 40,000 organizations by facilitating hiring, management, and payment for employees in over 150 countries, recently announced the achievement of $1.5 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in the first half of 2026. The company's valuation exceeds $17 billion.

This acquisition represents Deel’s fifteenth and illustrates its strategy of strengthening its platform via acquisitions focused on AI advancements and workforce infrastructure.

In a statement to CTech, Clarity CEO Michael Matias highlighted a notable instance uncovered by their systems: a candidate finalizing the hiring process for a critical engineering role was flagged as a malicious entity right before gaining access to sensitive systems. "Just as the candidate was about to receive an offer and a company laptop, our system confirmed that their identity was fraudulent. They had constructed a fake persona throughout the interview process," Matias explained, noting that the identity document was counterfeit and professional profiles were created solely to lend credibility to the deception.

Matias pointed out that these scams are not limited to a few sophisticated actors; identities can now be purchased for as little as $50 on the Dark Web. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, recognize this trend as a tactic used by both state-sponsored cyber groups and criminal organizations to pilfer sensitive information, intellectual property, and funds.

The acquisition will enhance Deel's identity verification capabilities throughout the entire employee lifecycle, from pre-employment checks and onboarding to device provisioning and secure access within organizations. With the synergy of Clarity's AI technology and Deel's expansive workforce platform, businesses will be enabled to conduct continuous identity verification rather than relying solely on initial assessments made during the hiring process.

"On a practical level, one of the cases we uncovered through Clarity’s systems clearly illustrates the scale of the threat: a candidate who was in the final stages of the hiring process for an engineering role at a global company, a position that was supposed to grant him access to the organization’s most sensitive systems, was identified as a malicious actor just before gaining access to the organization," Clarity CEO Michael Matias told CTech. According to him, the company’s platform had already been deployed at the customer to detect fraud and impersonation attempts across all remote interactions.

"Just before the candidate received the official offer and the company laptop, the system identified that this was a fake identity. The person who participated in all the interviews was not who he claimed to be, but rather a malicious actor. The identity document was forged, and the LinkedIn and GitHub profiles had also been created specifically to support the fraud and make it appear credible," he said.

Matias emphasized that these are not sophisticated scams limited to a small number of actors, as identities like these can today be purchased for as little as $50 on the Dark Web. According to law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, this is a tool used both by state-sponsored cyber organizations and by criminal groups whose goal is to steal sensitive information, intellectual property, and money.

The acquisition expands Deel’s identity capabilities across the entire employee lifecycle, from pre-hire identity verification and background checks, through onboarding, device provisioning and secure workforce access after employees join an organization.

The company said the combination of Clarity’s proprietary AI technology with Deel’s global workforce platform will allow organizations to continuously verify employee identities rather than relying only on one-time checks performed during hiring.
