OpenAI's workforce is deeply engaged in the use of tokens—so much so that they’re known for their substantial spending. Interestingly, the biggest spender isn't from within the company but rather an external user.

Employees at the AI research organization are recognized for their extensive token expenditures. For instance, Peter Steinberger, the innovator behind OpenClaw, once racked up an astonishing $1.3 million in token costs within a single month.

During a recent enterprise event, CEO Sam Altman highlighted the company’s top token consumer. He revealed that six and a half years ago, this individual was burning through 100,000 tokens monthly, potentially making them the most significant token user globally at the time.

"Fast forward to today, and this level of spending represents the average per capita use globally,” Altman noted, adding that the current leading token user at OpenAI now expends approximately 100 billion tokens per month.

However, this still isn’t the highest consumption on record. Altman disclosed that they had identified an individual outside of OpenAI who surpassed this figure, calling it a personal "embarrassment" for the company.

At OpenAI, a culture centered around token usage thrives. Reports suggest that the company maintains a leaderboard to track token expenditures, and employees often showcase their impressive totals on platforms like X. This culture is bolstered by OpenAI's own token sales.

There are accounts of OpenAI staff spending even greater amounts—like a screenshot from Steinberger that detailed the expenditure of 603 billion tokens in a single month. Additionally, a report from The New York Times indicated that one employee alone managed to spend 210 billion tokens in just a week.

While OpenAI leans into its token spending, other corporations are adopting a more cautious approach. Amazon recently discontinued its token leaderboard, and Uber has instituted spending limits following comments from its COO regarding the unsustainable nature of rising costs.

In a panel discussion, Altman referenced a popular meme about companies exhausting their entire 2026 budgets in the first quarter, prompting a need for greater efficiency. He acknowledged that the question of costs arose unexpectedly. "At the start of 2026, this concern wasn’t even on the table," he remarked, noting that everyone was satisfied with their spending levels at that time. Now, however, AI costs have escalated to a "significant issue," according to Altman.
