On Wednesday, Palantir's CEO Alex Karp expressed his concerns regarding the token-based models employed by U.S. AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, especially as operational costs continue to escalate. In an interview with CNBC's "Squawk Box," Karp remarked, "I’m not criticizing them, but there seems to be a significant issue at play. The prevailing sentiment among businesses in this nation is to take a step back and not waste time on tokens."
As the expenses associated with AI technologies rise and new models become increasingly expensive, businesses are moving away from the approach of "tokenmaxxing" and are instead focusing on achieving better returns on their investments. This shift is leading some companies to explore open-weight models, which offer similar capabilities at considerably lower costs. Moreover, the rapid advancement of Chinese AI models has raised alarms about the potential for these competitors to challenge the dominance of U.S. research laboratories in the field.
In response to these developments, shares of Palantir surged by 9% on Wednesday.
