Commissioning seven one-of-a-kind luxury watches from the Swiss brand Vanguart has inevitably led to some lighthearted "Lord of the Rings" banter surrounding OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's collection.

According to a recent article by The Wall Street Journal, Altman's passion for watches was highlighted by his acquisition of these custom pieces earlier this year, with one reserved for himself and the other six designated for senior executives at OpenAI. The company has yet to respond to inquiries from Business Insider about the order.

This intriguing news quickly caught the eye of watch aficionados on X, particularly The Luxury Watch Guy account, which garnered over a million views for its post on the timepieces. The popularity of the story led to an outpouring of memes, many of which humorously referenced Silicon Valley’s fascination with Tolkien's fantasy saga.

X users drew parallels between the luxurious watches and the concept of the "Rings of Power" from J.R.R. Tolkien's epic, making light of the exclusive nature of these custom creations. One user cleverly reimagined a verse from Tolkien for the tech sector, allocating watches to AI researchers, venture capitalists, and "SaaS founders doomed to die," humorously placing Altman "on his dark throne in the land of Silicon Valley where the shadows lie."

The Journal noted that these bespoke watches are based on Vanguart's titanium Orb model, which starts at a staggering $180,000.

This collection is not Altman's first venture into high-end timepieces; in 2023, he was seen sporting a Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 1, valued at approximately $480,000, with only 33 units ever produced.

Across Silicon Valley, watches are increasingly recognized as status symbols and branding tools among industry leaders. Recently, employees from OpenAI, Uber, Palantir, and other tech giants showcased limited-edition Tudor watches adorned with their companies' logos. OpenAI's head of applied research, Boris Power, shared images of a company-branded Tudor engraved with the motto "Good Research Takes Time," highlighting that this model was produced in a limited run of 400—still significantly larger than Altman’s exclusive seven-piece commission from Vanguart.
