For many years, Silicon Valley has operated within a familiar framework when it comes to handling disruption. However, OpenAI is challenging these unspoken conventions in a significant way.

This insight comes from an examination of Apple's recent lawsuit against the artificial intelligence company and the significant media coverage surrounding it.

In the typical Silicon Valley narrative, engineers often work on proprietary projects within large tech firms, honing their skills before venturing out to create startups. Most of these new companies remain relatively modest, addressing specific challenges that giants like Apple, Google, Nvidia, or Amazon may overlook. While many fail, the ones that succeed often become suppliers or are eventually acquired, further consolidating the power of the tech behemoths.

Such dynamics present a win-win for major corporations. They can rely on startups to take on the risks of innovation and then either implement new technologies once they demonstrate viability or absorb these companies to maintain control over the innovations and their creators.

To illustrate, a neighbor of mine in Silicon Valley developed a specialized semiconductor for a startup that Apple subsequently acquired. He spent several years in Cupertino, where his work contributed to the success of AirPods. Similarly, Kiva Systems was acquired by Amazon, which utilized its robotics technology to enhance warehouse efficiency, forming the backbone of its vast robotics operations.

Notably, Google adopted a similar strategy with Noam Shazeer, who departed to launch Character.ai, only to be enticed back through an acquisition.

OpenAI, however, is fundamentally altering this established routine. Its actions have created unease within the tech industry, even among past collaborators like Microsoft and Apple, as pointed out by Peter Kafka recently.

The crux of the matter is that while the Silicon Valley community often discusses the concept of disruption, it reacts harshly when faced with genuine disruption to its status quo.

A notable parallel can be drawn with Facebook, which, like OpenAI, enjoyed substantial funding and chose not to abide by the traditional industry guidelines—especially regarding talent acquisition. In the 2000s, a covert agreement among Apple, Google, Intel, Pixar, Adobe, and Intuit sought to prevent direct poaching of each other’s employees, which was later addressed in a Justice Department lawsuit.

Facebook opted out of this arrangement and instead aggressively recruited talent from Google, including under the guidance of Sheryl Sandberg, a former Google executive. Google's response was one of outrage, pushing Sandberg to curb Facebook's hiring from their company. Nevertheless, Sandberg stood firm, allowing Facebook to develop a robust digital advertising platform that challenged Google’s dominance.

As for OpenAI, its trajectory remains uncertain—will it emulate Facebook's rise, or will it falter? What stands out is OpenAI's blatant disregard for conventional boundaries regarding talent poached from tech giants. According to Apple's lawsuit, over 400 of its employees are now at OpenAI, indicating a significant shift in the workforce landscape.

OpenAI has been attracting high-level talent, including renowned figures like Jony Ive, the acclaimed designer of the iPhone, and Tang Tan, who spent 25 years at Apple shaping major products like the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPod. These aren't just mid-level hires but pivotal figures with substantial experience and vision.

As noted by tech commentator Ben Thompson, Apple has not faced robust competition for its top hardware and operations talent until now. The mass departure of key personnel to a direct competitor is unprecedented within this context, highlighting the unrest at Apple.

Moreover, OpenAI isn't merely aiming to address minor technological gaps. Its ambitions appear poised to challenge or potentially supersede the iPhone as the go-to device in the emerging AI landscape.

In response to Apple's allegations, OpenAI asserted it has "no interest in other companies' trade secrets," suggesting its intentions are more aggressive than collaborative. This represents a significant threat to Apple, prompting Thompson to suggest that Apple now faces the reality that AI could fundamentally disrupt its flagship product, the iPhone.

Equally concerning for Apple is OpenAI's remarkable funding status. Having raised over $100 billion earlier this year, any potential acquisition would be massively costly. Even if its valuation were to drop significantly, acquiring OpenAI would be a multi-billion-dollar endeavor, creating a serious barrier for Apple.

This context sheds light on the fervor behind Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI. Traditionally, startups that begin to expand too much or too quickly in Silicon Valley can be easily subdued or absorbed. However, OpenAI stands out as too large, well-funded, and ambitious to easily manage or assimilate.
