In a significant move to protect local wildlife, the co-founder and president of OpenAI has contributed $5.5 million to assist environmental organizations in acquiring a development site near Big Bear Lake, California. This announcement came from Friends of Big Bear Valley on Friday.
Facing a pressing deadline of July 31, the Friends of Big Bear Valley and the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust were tasked with raising $10 million to secure a 63-acre plot located along the lake's northern shore. This property, linked to a purchase agreement with RCK Properties, had garnered just $4.5 million as of earlier this week.
This particular land is situated close to the nest of Jackie and Shadow, the renowned bald eagles known to many online who frequent the area for hunting. Currently, Jackie is undergoing treatment for health issues at the Ojai Raptor Center.
According to a Facebook post from Friends of Big Bear Valley, "We did it together! With your help, we were able to raise the $10 million necessary to save Moon Camp. Your support for Jackie, Shadow, their chicks, and their habitat contributed significantly, and we are thrilled to announce that the total has been met thanks to the remarkable generosity of Anna and Greg Brockman."
The organization expressed gratitude towards the Brockmans, attributing their substantial donation to the ability of the land trust to not only purchase the site but also manage associated costs like taxes, legal fees, and land upkeep.
"We sincerely thank everyone who made a contribution to this crucial cause. The boards and team are especially grateful to Anna and Greg for their exceptional generosity in support of Jackie, Shadow, their chicks, and this beloved habitat," the post continued.
Jackie and Shadow are the only bald eagles that reside in the vicinity year-round, having successfully raised multiple chicks. Friends of Big Bear Valley noted their unique status and importance to the area.
In her remarks, Anna Brockman highlighted the communal spirit surrounding the eagles' habitat preservation: "Greg and I are thankful to everyone who rallied to save the home of these majestic eagles. Like many around the globe, we enjoy observing their partnership and parenting. They serve as a source of inspiration and connection to the natural world. We are proud to lend our support and are grateful to the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust and everyone involved in safeguarding this remarkable ecosystem, which will sustain life and protect the forest for future generations."
While the Brockmans' donation plays a pivotal role in conserving the eagles' habitat, it’s essential to recognize the environmental challenges linked to artificial intelligence. Research has identified that AI data centers contribute significantly to energy and water consumption, as well as pollution. A study released in March 2026 further noted these facilities might create localized climate effects, resulting in “heat islands” that could adversely affect surrounding communities and ecosystems.
