OpenAI and Synopsys have unveiled a new partnership aimed at transforming semiconductor design through their collaboration on GPT-Synopsys. This initiative merges OpenAI’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence with Synopsys’ renowned electronic design automation (EDA) tools, marking a significant step forward in semiconductor innovation.

Under a multi-year agreement, both companies will work as primary partners to develop and implement GPT-Synopsys, a tailored model designed specifically for chip design workflows. This collaboration includes a revenue-sharing framework and plans for joint marketing efforts to make the new model accessible to customers globally.

Currently, general-purpose AI models can manipulate EDA tools to manage chip design processes. However, with the new partnership, the goal is to enhance these frontier models so that they become proficient in using EDA tools, much like expert engineers. This expertise will allow the models to interpret outcomes, iterate designs, and optimize crucial factors such as power, performance, and area (PPA), ultimately accelerating the delivery of advanced semiconductor designs.

Sassine Ghazi, president and CEO of Synopsys, emphasized the necessity of expediting the chip design process while maintaining quality and accuracy with this collaboration. He stated, "This agreement will broaden access to Synopsys' advanced design capabilities and essential engineering tools needed to introduce increasingly intricate chips to the market.”

Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, highlighted the synergy between the two organizations, stating, "We’re putting our most advanced technologies to work in systems that support AI. By partnering with Synopsys, we aim to facilitate quicker and more efficient chip design, ultimately leading to better AI products available to more users."

The GPT-Synopsys initiative will allow engineers to delegate various design tasks—from PPA optimization to verification—while the integrated AI agents operate the design tools, interpret the outputs, and make iterative adjustments until designs meet verification standards. The system will be hosted on OpenAI's infrastructure and will be designed for compatibility with customer systems, showcasing deep integration with Synopsys.ai and the Synopsys Autopilot AI platform. Early collaborations with prominent semiconductor companies are already in progress.

The offering will ensure comprehensive security and governance, safeguarding customer data while providing a bundled package that includes compute resources, the specialized model, and required licenses. Notably, customer data will not be utilized for training the model and will be encrypted during storage and transmission, with customizable retention and audit controls available.

Synopsys, Inc. leads the engineering solutions market from silicon to systems, enabling rapid AI-powered product innovations. The company supplies top-tier solutions in silicon design, IP, simulation, and analysis, collaborating closely with clients across various sectors to enhance their research and development efficiencies, fueling advancements that will shape the future.

This news release includes forward-looking statements related to the capabilities, development, and launch of GPT-Synopsys, including potential risks and uncertainties. Variations in actual results may occur based on various factors, for which additional information is available in Synopsys' filings with the SEC.
