OpenAI is nearing the completion of a significant funding round that could elevate the artificial intelligence powerhouse's valuation beyond $1 trillion, paving the way for a potential initial public offering (IPO).

The San Francisco-based AI firm is in the process of raising up to $30 billion at a valuation of approximately $1.25 trillion, according to insiders familiar with the negotiations who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information. This figure does not include any newly raised capital.

Investors from the United Arab Emirates are reportedly leading this funding round, with support from Coatue. This financing is being characterized as an "opportunistic" bridge ahead of a possible IPO.

Discussions for this new funding initiative were sparked when investors approached OpenAI with proposals in September, as previously reported by CNBC. On Thursday, OpenAI informed investors that it aims to secure commitments by the end of next week, though the definitive amount for the round is still under consideration.

In conjunction with this new investment, OpenAI is also negotiating a commercial agreement to bolster its computing capacity with partners in the UAE. The company indicated to investors in February that it aims for roughly $600 billion in total computing expenses by 2030.

OpenAI filed its prospectus confidentially with the Securities and Exchange Commission back in June, but it has yet to announce a specific timeline for its public debut.

In an update to staff in August, OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar mentioned that the organization "will be a public company in 2027." However, CEO Sam Altman expressed the view that "now would be an ill-advised moment to go public" in the following month.

Meanwhile, Anthropic, a key competitor of OpenAI, is also preparing for what is anticipated to be a substantial IPO. The company similarly filed its prospectus confidentially with regulators in June and is engaging in active discussions with potential investors, as indicated by CNBC.

Reports suggest that Anthropic seeks a valuation ranging between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its offering. In May, the company successfully completed a $65 billion funding round, achieving a valuation of $965 billion.
