In recent times, brick-and-mortar venues are increasingly showcasing what some are calling "AI slop" on their menus. The rise of advanced and cost-effective AI image generation technologies — some even being available for free — has led to the emergence of visually striking and sometimes unsettling images in cafés, bodegas, and restaurants.
For instance, diners might encounter shrimp scampi that features shrimp resembling miniature life preservers or breakfast burritos filled with contents that bring to mind horror films. Additionally, “protein” dishes have been served that appear to be swarming with bugs.
One user on X shared her experience of trying to order a dish displayed on a café's outdoor menu, only to find out it was a fictional creation from ChatGPT, rather than an actual menu item.
This phenomenon coincides with a broader trend where the integration of AI has evolved from a specialized skill reserved for tech professionals to a standard practice among various white-collar roles. As inflation continues to pose challenges to the economy, many small businesses are turning to AI-generated graphics and logos as a budget-friendly option.
The repercussions of this trend are palpable. For example, a coffee shop in San Francisco incurred significant expenses to remove graffiti that was a backlash against its use of AI-generated food imagery, according to SFGate.
“I want people to visit our restaurant, but I’m puzzled as to why this issue provokes such strong reactions,” remarked co-owner Lyndsey Lozano in an interview. “Is it really that shocking that it stirs such a response?”
Unfortunately, Lozano was unavailable for further comment on the situation.
Experts, like Paul Shovlin, a professor at Ohio University who specializes in AI, noted that many of the businesses utilizing AI-generated food imagery are likely small, family-owned establishments operating with limited resources. For veteran graphic designers, however, the surge in AI-generated imagery has been frustrating, significantly impacting their livelihoods.
