These innovative glasses not only translate languages but also provide users with the ability to listen to music and inquire about their surroundings.

Holding a dominant position in the smart glasses sector with approximately 70% market share, Meta is now contending with increasing competition from both Google and Samsung. The announcement of these glasses marks Meta's deeper commitment to the wearable tech arena, which is rapidly becoming a pivotal segment in the ongoing artificial intelligence competition.

A significant selling point is the glasses' lower price, intended to make them accessible to a wider audience—an essential strategy for Meta as it continues to justify its substantial investment in AI technology. Andrew Bosworth, Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of affordability in ensuring broad market reach, beyond just aesthetics and design.

The new Meta glasses represent a shift from earlier collaborations with EssilorLuxottica on co-branded products like Ray-Ban and Oakley. Nonetheless, Meta will still collaborate with EssilorLuxottica for certain elements, such as the lenses, while continuing to market the existing Ray-Ban and Oakley models.

Bosworth acknowledged consumer willingness to pay more for the iconic Ray-Ban brand and highlighted that the new, in-house designed frames are tailored to diversify consumer options. The glasses are available in three styles: the compact Adventurer, the larger round Fury, and an oval variant dubbed Meta Glasses by Kylie, designed in collaboration with the celebrity.

Equipped with advanced features, the glasses can translate text, identify locations, and perform tasks like estimating calories for a bowl of strawberries or providing recommendations for nearby museums. The latest Muse Spark AI model enhances the glasses' ability to capture detailed visuals and remember user preferences. This capability will also be extended to older models through a software update.

During a recent demonstration, CNN experienced firsthand the glasses' ability to translate an Arabic sign to English and discern real objects from props. However, these functionalities are similar to what Meta's previously released glasses offer, which might not sway those skeptical about the utility of smart glasses. The Jenner-designed model stands out for its unique sound notifications and an option for a customized AI voice modeled after Kylie Jenner's.

Despite the technological advancements, tech analysts note that companies are still trying to convince consumers of the practical advantages of smart glasses over smartphones and similar devices. Runar Bjorhovde from Omdia indicated that the key challenge is whether these wearables can offer something completely new or useful.

Market predictions suggest that the average price of smart glasses could decrease over the next few years—from $376 in 2026 to around $229 by 2030—potentially enhancing their mass appeal.

Privacy issues remain a significant concern for Meta; reports indicate some individuals misused smart glasses to film videos without consent. Meta has implemented an LED indicator to inform bystanders when recording is taking place, which Bosworth described as a necessary element in addressing such challenges.

According to the IDC, smart glasses experienced a remarkable 167% increase in shipments in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in the previous year. Meta's share in this market is notably strong at 69.2%, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioning in a recent earnings call that the daily user base for its glasses has tripled over the last year.

However, increased competition is on the horizon, as Google and Samsung are set to release their own AI glasses with similar capabilities later this year, along with OpenAI working on its hardware. Furthermore, a Pew Research study shows that Meta’s AI assistant trails behind ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini in popularity, with significant market penetration of these competing technologies.

This landscape poses a grave challenge for Meta, especially given its history of previous hardware launches failing to resonate with consumers. The goal now is to elevate smart glasses to the level of ubiquity seen with smartphones and smartwatches—potentially giving Meta’s AI assistant the traction it needs in the competitive arena against ChatGPT and Gemini.

Looking ahead, Bosworth hinted at future developments: “Our design team is intrigued by the question of how we can extend these capabilities to individuals who do not wear glasses.” This indicates a commitment to exploring various forms of wearable tech that could deliver similar functionalities to a broader audience.
