In a recent interview with Vogue Italia, Madonna expressed her concerns regarding artificial intelligence, asserting that dependence on AI contradicts the essence of artistic creation.
She reflected on the past, reminiscing about a time when artists—painters, musicians, dancers—gathered in one space, collaborating purely for one another’s sake. “I cherish those experiences,” she stated. “Today, the landscape has changed; securing a record deal often hinges on the number of followers you have.”
Addressing her song “Bring Your Love,” Madonna emphasized the importance of not getting distracted by metrics: “That’s why I say, ‘Don’t try to distract me with numbers.’ For me, it began with a focus away from charts and streaming statistics. AI and algorithms promote a risk-averse mindset, which I believe is contrary to the heart of artistic expression.”
As she works on new music, Madonna intentionally disconnects from technological distractions and social media to ignite her creativity. “Recently, with all the pressures from my record and associated responsibilities, it’s been challenging. I find it essential to take time for myself… to retreat and isolate. That’s how I nurture my imagination,” she noted. “Being in nature, spending time with my children and horses is vital.”
This isn't the first occasion Madonna has voiced her criticism of technology. During a Q&A session at the premiere of her film, “Confessions II – The Film,” she remarked on the pervasive urge to document every moment due to social media. She urged attendees to “put your fucking phones down and connect” with one another.
