A group of over a dozen victims, accompanied by their parents, has initiated legal action against Lancaster Country Day School and various artificial intelligence firms in connection with a disturbing case of AI-generated child pornography.
The case involves two 16-year-old students from Lancaster Country Day School who recently acknowledged their involvement in creating fake nude images of their classmates using AI technology during a juvenile court proceeding. Officials from the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office confirmed that the adolescents were found delinquent on 59 felony counts related to the production of child sexual abuse material. The lawsuit, which was lodged in federal court on Monday, includes the two students and their parents as named defendants.
The civil complaint alleges that the school was informed about the existence of deepfake nude images through several tips up until June 2024 but failed to act on the information. It accuses designated mandatory reporters of not fulfilling their obligations, allowing the two boys to persist in their creation of AI-based child pornography that affected further victims. Court documents indicate that the teens generated over 350 images of 59 minors.
The legal filing, crafted by Kline & Specter, P.C., states, "This case arises from an extended, catastrophic institutional failure."
Further allegations in the lawsuit claim misconduct on the part of school staff, including the head of school, their assistants, and the president of the board, aimed at obstructing the ongoing criminal investigation. The suit also contends that students were initially discouraged from approaching law enforcement about the matter and were denied necessary support.
Victims have reported experiencing significant emotional distress following the incident, including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, stating that their high school experience has been irrevocably altered. In their demands for relief, the victims and their parents seek compensatory and punitive damages, attorney's fees, and any further support the court deems appropriate.
