After more than ten years away from filmmaking, Gregg Araki has returned with his new project, "I Want Your Sex," introducing it to a transformed Hollywood landscape. In a recent conversation with Deadline, the writer and director shared insights into how AI technology played a significant role in refining a particular dialogue scene shot on a mini golf course adjacent to a busy freeway.
Araki expressed his fascination with the advancements in filmmaking technology, highlighting how it has made the process much more accessible for creators. He reminisced about his early days in cinema, notably discussing the challenges he and contemporaries like Richard Linklater faced while making films like "Three Bewildered People [in the Night]" and "Slacker." Back then, the technical hurdles—such as working with 16mm film, loading magazines, and dealing with equipment issues—meant that only the most dedicated could manage to bring a film to life.
He remarked, “Now, with today’s advanced technology, including high-sensitivity cameras and editing software, the landscape has dramatically changed. While I don’t endorse the idea of AI replacing actors or writers, the tools available for post-production have been a game-changer for us. Our mini golf scene was incredibly challenging due to the noise from the freeway, but thanks to modern post-production tools, we could eliminate most of that distracting sound, allowing the dialogue to shine through clearly. The editing and visual effects have reached new heights, offering indie filmmakers unprecedented access to quality resources.”
Araki also conveyed optimism about the trajectory of independent cinema, particularly in light of the unexpected successes of films like "Obsession," which have been jarring for an industry increasingly dominated by big-budget franchises and intellectual properties.
“There’s a lot happening in the film world right now, and things feel very chaotic,” Araki pointed out. “While it has always been difficult for indie films to secure distribution and funding, these challenges seem to be evolving. Personally, I’m feeling hopeful about what’s to come. Many traditional formulas seem ineffective now, and Hollywood appears to be in a state of flux—like the Titanic, with people rushing around as the old rules are rewritten.”
Co-written by Araki and Karley Sciortino, "I Want Your Sex" features Olivia Wilde in the role of dominatrix Erika Tracy, a bold artist who invites her assistant Elliot, played by Cooper Hoffman, to assume the role of her sexual submissive.
