In a significant development within the entertainment and technology sectors, Google DeepMind has forged a partnership with the esteemed indie film studio A24. This collaboration, revealed on Monday, involves a substantial investment of $75 million, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. A24 has gained recognition for its acclaimed films like “Marty Supreme,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” and the recent sensation “Backrooms.” This venture is being hailed as a groundbreaking alliance that aims to create AI-driven tools specifically tailored for filmmakers, allowing Google DeepMind to benefit from insights and perspectives provided by prominent artists.
Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, expressed confidence in this approach, stating, “We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them. By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.”
Despite ongoing discussions and debates in Hollywood regarding the integration of AI in filmmaking, A24 is not alone in its exploration of these technologies. Earlier this year, Netflix announced its acquisition of Interpositive, a company founded by Ben Affleck that specializes in developing AI tools for the film industry. Additionally, Amazon’s MGM Studios launched an AI division last year aimed at creating innovative tools for TV and film production.
