ByteDance is reportedly in negotiations to acquire a minimum of 50,000 Iluvatar CoreX AI chips, according to multiple sources. Should the agreement proceed, Iluvatar CoreX will be recognized as ByteDance's third significant domestic supplier of AI chips, joining Huawei and Cambricon in this capacity.

Additionally, the company is evaluating the possibility of using Baidu's Kunlunxin chips, as revealed by insiders. The anticipated deal signifies a shift as Chinese manufacturers enhance their capabilities to offer alternatives to international AI chips, coinciding with Beijing's efforts to bolster local chip production amid stringent U.S. export restrictions.

As per statements from Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, the company's market presence in China has drastically diminished. However, James Mitchell, Chief Strategy Officer at Tencent, indicated that domestic AI chips are expected to become widely available in the latter half of this year.

Iluvatar CoreX, a noted GPU startup based in Shanghai, aims to deliver at least 50,000 chips to ByteDance this calendar year, primarily intended for inference workloads. This move aligns with ByteDance’s strategy to broaden the user base for its AI chatbot, Doubao. It’s important to note that inference tasks, which involve responding to inquiries, differ from the training of AI models that typically utilize high-performance chips.

While the deal details have yet to be finalized and could still evolve, a partnership with ByteDance—one of China’s leading tech entities with substantial investments in AI infrastructure—would mark a noteworthy achievement for Iluvatar CoreX. Until now, the company has mainly engaged in supplying chips for government procurement projects.

Having gone public in Hong Kong this January, Iluvatar CoreX reported revenue of 1 billion yuan (approximately $148 million) for 2025, predominantly generated from GPU sales, benefitting from a heightened demand for domestic AI hardware. Its Tiangai chips are designed for AI training, while the Zhikai series focuses on inference processing, as detailed on their website.

Projected revenue for Iluvatar CoreX is expected to reach 3.04 billion yuan (around $449.8 million) in the current year, with total shipment estimates soaring by 139% to exceed 100,000 chips, based on research from Huatai Securities. The average selling price for the Zhikai inference chips has been estimated at approximately 12,000 yuan, or about $1,775 per unit.

Following the Reuters report, shares of Iluvatar CoreX experienced a 12% increase in Hong Kong trading.
