Jeff Dean, a pivotal figure in Google's evolution over the past 27 years, is now the center of attention as he embarks on a new venture in artificial intelligence. Reports indicate that investors are considering a substantial $1 billion investment into his AI startup, Discovery Loop, which is being valued at approximately $10 billion.

The startup has generated significant buzz in Silicon Valley recently, especially following Dean's announcement of his exit from Google, where he earned legendary status. Though details surrounding the funding round remain fluid and unconfirmed, a spokesperson for Dean has opted not to comment on the specifics.

While concrete fundraising figures have not been disclosed by Dean, he has articulated his vision for Discovery Loop. He describes the entity as a public benefit corporation dedicated to the automation of machine learning, science, and engineering, aiming to expedite discoveries and innovation.

Discovery Loop intends to confront some of the most formidable challenges in science and engineering by employing the simultaneous execution of thousands of experiments. According to an August 5 press release from the company, the funding round is led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with contributions from industry heavyweights such as Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital. Notably, Alphabet has been identified as a founding investor and serves as a cloud partner, as indicated by Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai.

The founding team of Discovery Loop boasts an impressive track record, with years of experience in the development of key Google products. Sanjay Ghemawat, a close collaborator of Dean since 1999, played a critical role in creating fundamental distributed-computing technologies. Quoc Le, a core member of Google Brain, is renowned for his research in deep learning and large-scale neural networks, significantly advancing language models and related foundational technologies. Oriol Vinyals, recognized for his contributions at Google DeepMind, has made substantial impacts in sequence modeling and reinforcement learning.

Dean recently shared a pitch deck via X, which one former Google product executive referred to as one of the most impressive ever seen. The deck highlights products developed by the founding team, including Google Search, Ads, Gemini, and Gmail, as well as showcasing their academic accolades, which rank Dean, Le, and Vinyals among the top cited researchers in AI.

The formation of Discovery Loop exemplifies a broader trend of talent departing from Google to launch ambitious AI startups with substantial funding. Other notable examples include former DeepMind researcher David Silver, who secured $1.1 billion for his lab, Ineffable Intelligence, with a valuation of $5.1 billion. Similarly, former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou reportedly achieved a pre-money valuation of $25 billion for Reflection AI. Additionally, Periodic Labs, co-founded by ex-Google Brain researcher Ekin Dogus Cubuk and ex-OpenAI researcher Liam Fedus, raised hundreds of millions, while Sakana AI, led by former Google researchers Llion Jones and David Ha, was valued at $2.65 billion last year.
