Epic has announced an expansion of its suite of artificial intelligence tools aimed at enhancing support for outpatient clinicians. The newly introduced feature, known as Ergo Visit, aggregates patient data from Epic’s electronic health records along with other relevant sources to provide a summarized view for healthcare providers, as revealed during the company's annual meeting in Wisconsin on Tuesday. Ochsner Health, based in Louisiana, is the first organization to implement this tool, with five other physicians outside the system currently testing it.

Garrett Adams, Epic's senior vice president of research and development, explained that the vision behind Ergo Visit was to reimagine the outpatient visit, as if they were starting from scratch with today’s technological advancements.

Ergo Visit represents the latest addition to Epic's expanding range of AI functionalities integrated into its electronic health record system. This suite also includes features like a clinical notetaker, a revenue cycle automation tool, and a patient-centric AI assistant.

According to Epic, Ergo Visit is designed to enable clinicians to focus more on their interactions with patients instead of being preoccupied with record-keeping. The tool activates before the appointment, leveraging Epic’s AI capabilities to highlight pertinent topics for discussion, such as the patient's reason for the visit and any upcoming vaccinations. Following the consultation, it can assist with drafting notes and identifying key issues for the clinician’s attention.

The tool's real-world application began on August 3, with four clinicians at Ochsner Health utilizing its features. Dr. Stephen Lambert, a primary care physician at the facility, likened the tool's support to a GPS system, which, while users can navigate familiar paths, is capable of guiding them more efficiently.

Currently, Epic’s AI tools support approximately 1.4 million clinicians within its electronic health record system each month. Despite Epic's stronghold on the EHR market, holding 42% of the acute care segment for 2024, competing companies are also adopting AI innovations to enhance their offerings. Notably, Oracle Health recently launched its AI-enabled patient portal in the U.S., fully integrated with its EHR system.

During its annual meeting, in addition to introducing Ergo Visit, Epic shared updates on various products, including Agent Factory—a platform for creating custom AI agents—and Curiosity, a predictive tool designed to deliver insights related to hospital readmissions and patient outcomes.
