Entrepreneurs today are embracing the transformative power of AI like never before. A recent survey conducted by EY revealed that over 75% of established entrepreneurs in the U.S. have integrated AI into their operations to some degree, with about 10% achieving complete integration across their business functions.
The survey, which focused on 500 entrepreneurs generating annual revenues exceeding $5 million, showed a clear expectation that investments in AI will yield significant measurable benefits, particularly in areas like revenue enhancement through sales and marketing, improved customer experiences, and greater operational efficiency.
When asked to identify the most valuable impacts of AI investments, entrepreneurs highlighted the following key areas:
- Revenue growth through sales and marketing: 57% - Cost reduction in operations: 55% - Enhanced customer experience: 49% - Innovation in products and services: 48% - Improved back-office efficiency: 47% - Greater workforce efficiency: 43%
The findings indicate that entrepreneurs are increasingly focused on ensuring their AI investments translate into tangible returns. Notably, over a third of respondents mentioned they had cut spending on technology tools, including AI, within the past year. The authors of the study emphasized a common struggle among organizations to measure the true impact of AI, prompting a demand for clear financial benefits.
While many entrepreneurs recognize the potential of AI, challenges remain in scaling its implementation. Data readiness, complex integration processes, talent shortages, and security concerns are among the most significant hurdles. However, an impressive 99% of participants reported having established frameworks to manage risks related to data and AI security.
Additionally, the survey revealed that most entrepreneurs are focused on reshaping their work processes rather than downsizing their workforce. Almost 88% anticipate expanding their teams in the coming year. As routine tasks become automated, the emphasis shifts toward enhancing skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and customer engagement.
Despite navigating a tough business landscape, a substantial 88% of respondents expect to grow their workforce within the next year. Simultaneously, nearly all survey participants believe AI will transform their workforce strategies, with 42% planning to redesign roles to better blend human talent with technological capabilities.
Interestingly, barriers to growth are also evident, with 37% of respondents citing talent shortages as a significant obstacle, and 46% linking the lack of expertise to challenges in scaling AI initiatives. Additionally, resistance to AI adoption stems from skill gaps (16%) and hesitance among the workforce (13%).
To address these challenges, many entrepreneurs are focusing on not only hiring new talent in AI and digital fields (35%) but also undertaking extensive reskilling and upskilling efforts (38%). These strategies are increasingly mirroring the approaches of larger organizations.
For entrepreneurs aiming to leverage AI for business growth, the EY team provides several actionable recommendations to facilitate the journey ahead.
