DeepSeek has emerged as a key player in the competition between Beijing and the United States in the field of artificial intelligence. This prominence surged over a year ago when the company introduced a groundbreaking, cost-effective AI model that created significant impact in both Silicon Valley and Wall Street.

In a successful first fundraising round, DeepSeek secured over $7.4 billion, earmarked for the expensive development of its AI technologies. With this funding, investors have valued the startup at over $50 billion, establishing it as the most valuable AI company in China.

Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, held nearly 90% of the company prior to this investment round and contributed approximately $3 billion as part of the funding effort, representing the largest single investment in the round, according to insiders.

Retaining control of DeepSeek, Liang has implemented a unique structure wherein most of the external investors contribute through a limited partnership that he oversees, rather than making direct investments in the company. Additionally, he has instituted a five-year holding period for investors' stakes, further cementing his control.

In a notable involvement, China's National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund—launched early last year with government backing—invested roughly $150 million directly into DeepSeek. This investment marks a significant reduction from the fund's initial ambitions, which included plans to lead the financing round.

Reports from The Information previously highlighted aspects of this deal, though both DeepSeek and the AI fund have not yet provided comments in response to inquiries.
