Austria has put forth a suggestion for the European Union to consider the establishment of Anthropic within its borders. This move aims to counteract the United States' attempts to restrict access for foreign users to the AI firm's most sophisticated models.
In a correspondence to EU Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, made public by the Austrian government, Alexander Proell, the State Secretary for Digitalization, emphasized the necessity for Europe to remain engaged with significant innovations.
Proell advocated for a collective effort to strategically integrate Anthropic into the EU, ensuring legal certainty, access to markets, investment opportunities, and alignment with the company’s values. He acknowledged, however, that the feasibility of this initiative might raise doubts.
"The primary question is not about the ease of implementation," Proell noted. "Rather, it is whether we, as Europeans, are willing to shape our technological destiny or prefer to remain as mere implementers of decisions formulated elsewhere."
At this time, Anthropic has not responded to inquiries regarding Austria's proposal.
Earlier this month, the European Commission unveiled initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic sectors including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and semiconductors, while also looking to reduce dependence on major U.S. technology companies, despite facing criticism from the U.S. government about its approach to regulating the industry.
