Verizon is making significant strides to engage with the booming AI sector emerging from Silicon Valley. The telecom powerhouse has announced an agreement valued at over $1 billion to connect Google’s data centers via its dark fiber networks. Simultaneously, the company is removing copper wiring from its central offices as it transitions these sites into smaller data centers tailored to support AI inference workloads.
This announcement came during an earnings conference call that outlined Verizon's new “AI Connect” business strategy for the second quarter of 2026. The company is also gearing up to unveil more AI-focused partnerships by year-end, which are expected to generate “multiple billions of dollars in revenue over the coming years,” as stated by Verizon Communications CEO Dan Schulman.
Schulman emphasized the importance of connecting data centers efficiently to meet the surging demand for computational power. He highlighted that while the need for data center connectivity is skyrocketing, there is an equally pressing requirement for ultra-low latency services to power applications such as robotics, remote surgery, and autonomous vehicles, moving the processing capabilities closer to the edge rather than relying solely on large, centralized data centers.
In addition to utilizing dark fiber for hyperscale AI data centers, Verizon is in the early phases of upgrading some of its central office locations, which contain critical infrastructure for internet and mobile services, into compact data centers. These "remote data centers" are designed to enhance inference edge computing capabilities and reduce data latency, catering to the deployment of AI-enhanced services like autonomous taxi fleets and various robotics applications, as noted by Schulman.
