After a lengthy period of inactivity in the artificial intelligence sector, Apple unveiled its strategy to make a significant comeback on Monday. During a 75-minute event in Cupertino, California, the tech giant announced enhancements to its digital assistant, Siri, alongside new capabilities for its A.I. framework, Apple Intelligence.
Apple disclosed that Siri would evolve beyond its previous role as a basic voice assistant with limited conversational skills and request recognition. The anticipated Siri AI, set to launch later this year, will serve as a more sophisticated and interactive digital assistant, drawing similarities to chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. Executives demonstrated the new assistant's abilities through a recorded showcase, illustrating its capacity to assist with various tasks, including finding concert tickets and suggesting recipes for gatherings.
This announcement comes after a series of setbacks and quality concerns that hampered Apple's initial efforts to integrate A.I. into its products and enhance Siri. Ultimately, the company decided to delay the launch until the technology could meet its standards.
Moreover, Apple emphasized that users would be able to access the enhanced digital assistant on their smartphones, laptops, and other devices. Siri AI will be functional in device search bars and will feature in a dedicated app. Apple is positioning its cautious and deliberate approach to A.I. as a distinct alternative to strategies employed by other tech firms.
