In a proactive move, Apple announced plans to tighten restrictions on “full disk access” for Mac users due to concerns raised by the capabilities of AI tools, as highlighted in a recent TechCrunch report. As of a Friday update, Apple indicated that it will implement new measures designed to ensure that users who genuinely wish to permit an application such extensive access must take clear, deliberate actions to do so.

This announcement follows a discovery by Inc’s Jason Aten, who noted that Meta’s Muse AI appeared to possess information from his messages without receiving explicit consent from him on either his iPhone or Mac. In response, Meta spokesman Andy Stone contended that reading Messages is “completely opt-in” and clarified that both Full Disk Access and the Messages connector must be activated for Muse to access message content.

In light of these developments, Apple aims to regulate how developers utilize this extensive level of access. The company stated:

“Some developers are utilizing Full Disk Access in ways that may jeopardize user security, potentially exposing all data on their systems—including files, emails, messages, and even browsing history—without users being fully aware or informed. As AI technologies evolve and become more self-sufficient, the dangers linked to such extensive access will increase significantly.”

Full disk access is a macOS permission that allows applications to access a user's entire system. Apple expressed that this feature often bypasses existing privacy settings designed to enhance user control and enable backup programs to operate effectively on Mac systems. However, as of now, the company has not specified a timeline for when the updates concerning full disk access will be implemented. A request for a comment from The Verge went unanswered by Apple.
