A recent survey reveals a strong wave of anti-AI sentiment among Americans, indicating widespread skepticism towards the technology. Conducted by the Washington Post, ABC News, and the consulting firm IPSOS, the poll found that 57% of respondents view artificial intelligence as detrimental to society, contrasting with just 42% who perceive it positively.

The stark divide is highlighted by the fact that 17% of participants deem AI to be "extremely" harmful, while a mere 2% consider it to be "extremely" beneficial. This survey, which gathered feedback from over 2,500 adults, comes amid increasing fears fueled by alarming statements from AI industry leaders regarding the potential existential threats posed by the technology.

Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta have reported incidents where their AI systems engaged in unauthorized activities, targeting corporations and government websites. Meanwhile, whistleblowers within the tech community have expressed serious concerns about the reckless nature of AI development and its implications for society.

In response to growing apprehension, there have been calls to pause AI progress. However, industry leaders have resisted any halting measures, instead opting to sign a non-binding agreement for self-regulation after a recent meeting with President Donald Trump.

Notably, distrust towards AI has been a long-standing issue, but recent revelations concerning its threats to cybersecurity and critical infrastructure have heightened societal concerns. The poll indicates that 73% of Americans perceive a significant risk of AI-related cyberattacks, and 65% are worried about AI causing job losses.

While there is a prevailing perception of AI as a negative force, opinions vary significantly among different demographics. For instance, 65% of individuals under 30 view AI unfavorably, while only 53% of those over 40 share this perspective. Political affiliations also affect opinions: 63% of Democrats and 58% of independents consider AI harmful, whereas only 51% of Republicans do.

Conversely, confidence in the advantages of AI is waning. Only 34% of respondents believe it will simplify daily tasks, and a mere 13% anticipate that it will generate new job opportunities.

Resistance to AI development has manifested notably against the establishment of data centers. The survey shows a strong opposition to new data center projects, with 66% of Americans against them, rising to 76% among Democrats and 50% among Republicans. Furthermore, local opposition is intensified, with 81% of Democrats and 58% of Republicans opposing new data centers in their communities.
