At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced on January 20, 2026, that the company is making a significant commitment to India by investing an additional $13 billion to enhance its artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure. This latest investment brings Amazon's total expenditure in the country to $48 billion planned from 2026 to 2030.
The newly allocated funds will specifically target the expansion of Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in Mumbai and Hyderabad, as outlined in a company statement released on Thursday. Last December, Amazon had already signaled a substantial investment of $35 billion, as major tech companies vie for a strong presence in the rapidly growing Indian market.
Jassy emphasized Amazon’s dedication to becoming "a long-term partner in India's growth story," aligning the company's initiatives with India's goals of improving AI accessibility, digitizing small businesses, generating employment opportunities, and facilitating export activities.
During his visit, Jassy engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reaffirmed the significance of India's market to Amazon. The firm has established a versatile presence in the region, operating across various sectors including e-commerce, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and entertainment.
In total, Amazon's investments in India from 2010 to 2030 are expected to reach a remarkable $88 billion. The company aspires to leverage its data centers to offer Indian startups, corporate entities, and government organizations access to tailored AI chips, managed AI solutions, and reliable cloud infrastructure.
Recently, India attracted substantial investments, amassing $50 billion in just a day from major U.S. tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft. Additionally, Google is investing $15 billion in developing data center capabilities to support a new AI hub in southern India.
While India currently lacks domestic production of advanced chips and does not yet possess a state-of-the-art foundational AI model comparable to those in the U.S. or China, the data center landscape in the country is experiencing swift growth. The Indian government is fostering this development by providing generous long-term tax incentives to global hyperscalers.
According to a recent report from global brokerage Nomura, India's data center industry is rapidly rising to become one of the world's fastest-growing markets. The nation’s data center capacity surged to approximately 1.6GW in 2025, up from just 350MW in 2019, reflecting a 29% compounded annual growth rate, surpassing the global average of 20%.
