Alibaba has recently taken a significant step by making its flagship AI models open source, which allows anyone to utilize and customize them at no cost. This move drastically reduces the expenses associated with utilizing its technology compared to proprietary options from U.S. firms like Anthropic and OpenAI, enabling Alibaba to attract a diverse range of users globally.

However, this strategy raises a challenging dilemma: how can the company monetize its newfound worldwide popularity? This is a common issue faced by many companies leveraging open-source technologies, and it has sparked differing opinions within Alibaba’s AI division.

Once a titan of the e-commerce landscape, Alibaba's dominance has waned in recent years as more affordable competitors have emerged domestically, complicating its international expansion efforts. Following the retreat of founder Mr. Ma from the spotlight, a new wave of leaders has taken charge, adopting a more understated approach while aligning Alibaba’s strategies with the broader technology directives established by Beijing.

“Alibaba recognizes its role as a key player among the national champions driving China's A.I. ambitions,” noted Kyle Chan, a Brookings Institution fellow. “However, this also comes with the significant obligation to avoid repeating past missteps.”

Looking back, Alibaba strategically positioned itself to emerge as a leader in the AI sector. As the company’s e-commerce and logistics operations grew, it developed extensive data centers capable of handling massive amounts of customer data from around the globe.
