At the recent graduation ceremony for Rutgers University in Piscataway Township, New Jersey, the discussion around the value of a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in today's AI-driven landscape took center stage.

A significant 86% of over 1,000 financial services executives in the U.S. surveyed by consulting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP expressed the belief that training in artificial intelligence is more beneficial than earning an MBA for many new recruits. This sentiment reflects the pressing need for businesses to adopt AI technologies effectively.

The findings, published on Monday, indicate that organizations are willing to adjust their pay scales accordingly. An impressive 91% of executives reported plans to increase salaries for those with AI expertise.

Peter Pollini, who heads PwC’s financial services sector, highlighted the demand for professionals who can not only comprehend AI agents but also how to construct and manage them effectively. He emphasized that companies are on the lookout for talent equipped with technical know-how to implement the AI solutions they have recognized as crucial.

The debate over the return on investment for an MBA has persisted for years, especially given that the average total cost of obtaining the degree is approaching $300,000. With tuition fees on the rise, prospective students are increasingly evaluating the value they derive from such an investment.

In response to this changing landscape, universities are seizing the opportunity to adapt. Renowned business schools such as Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are expanding their offerings of AI-focused executive education courses. These courses are designed to be shorter and more affordable than traditional degree programs, often culminating in a certificate. For instance, MIT offers a concise five-day course titled “Leading the AI-Driven Organization” for approximately $13,000.

As the demand for AI-proficient workforce intensifies, some companies, including tech firms like IBM, Shopify, and Cloudflare, are increasing their entry-level hiring efforts. They are banking on the capabilities of recent Gen Z graduates, who are expected to leverage AI tools more effectively than their older counterparts.
