Former U.K. Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair recently remarked that the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) is similarly significant to the industrial revolution, yet many seem content with the idea of merely keeping "humans in the loop" during this transformative era. In contrast, during the 19th century, it was uncommon for individuals to consult steam engines about their preferred applications.
AI serves as a tool that can boost human efforts, uncover connections, and analyze vast amounts of data beyond human capability. As AI evolves towards “general intelligence,” it is poised to innovate and develop solutions that may currently seem beyond our imagination, particularly in fields like science, healthcare, and engineering. The future will likely witness dynamic collaborations between humans and technology, setting a new standard.
For these partnerships to succeed, humans must play a pivotal role, transitioning from being “in the loop” to “in the lead.” Qualities like morality, intuition, and emotional insight are distinctly human traits that will become increasingly vital, especially in rapid innovation cycles. As AI facilitates creativity, the question of how to leverage these capabilities will take center stage.
Take Edward Enninful, for instance, who made history as the first Black editor-in-chief of British Vogue, advocating for diversity in fashion. Notably, he showcased nine models of African descent on the magazine's cover in February 2022 and became the youngest fashion editor at an international magazine, i-D, at 18. Alongside his sister Akua, he co-founded EE72, a media company that stands out for its commitment to human-driven content amid a proliferation of synthetic material.
“I believe in slow digital,” Enninful states, emphasizing his focus on curation rather than contributing to the overwhelming noise of digital content. At the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, he discussed how to position a creative company in an AI-dominated landscape, reflecting on the challenge leaders face in discerning true value amidst a flood of information.
Enninful highlights that quietness has become a rare and sought-after quality in the media space. He has even suggested that magazines could experience a resurgence similar to how BookTok sparked a renewed interest in reading among younger audiences. Despite initial skepticism about launching a magazine, he found that there was still a demand for thoughtfully crafted content.
While producing a magazine, Enninful is careful not to label EE72 as merely a magazine enterprise, as it doesn’t accept advertisements. Instead, he has sought to innovate a sustainable business model that focuses on genuine client relationships through events and collaborations. This allows EE72 to create content solely for the enjoyment of its readers.
The magazine features a diverse blend of high fashion, narrative storytelling, art, and culture—everything presented in a restrained manner. Enninful recalls a particularly engaging cover shoot with Rihanna and a photographer renowned for his analogue style, which lent the images an artistic quality.
The summer edition featuring Rihanna quickly sold out online, proving that audiences still crave authenticity and innovative concepts in a world dominated by algorithms. Despite the growing prominence of AI, Enninful asserts that it should complement rather than replace human creativity.
One technology leader at Cannes articulated that as integral to modern life as electricity, AI cannot be ignored. However, like electricity, humans have the ability to choose when to disengage, allowing natural creativity to thrive.
Enninful acknowledges the importance of AI in enhancing the fashion experience. In collaboration with brands like Moncler and Google, his team utilized Google’s AI tool that enables virtual try-ons at New York Fashion Week, making it easier for those hesitant about in-store shopping to experiment with styles.
“Democratizing fashion has always been crucial to me,” he notes, pointing out that while technology can enrich the retail experience, it cannot substitute for the essential human aspect.
Ultimately, Enninful believes that the demand for genuine human interaction will remain strong. Even if consumers are unaware of AI's involvement in content creation, there is an inherent recognition of its influence. Authenticity and creativity will always stand out amid the digital noise.
An earlier magazine cover shoot featuring Kate Moss showcased AI-enhanced photography, displayed prominently in London’s Piccadilly Circus. Enninful remarks, “AI is a tool that enhances and creates, but ultimately, the human touch is essential in deciding the final direction of the creative process.”
As the narrative around AI and human creativity continues to evolve, the importance of authentic, human-driven content remains ever-present.
